imo - He's a legend of a teacher and a truly nice guy (not to mention his fight history, work in films, martial arts etc etc). In public (especially) he's always having fun and playing up an old school wrestling/hardman character. All those faces and the bravado are just a sincere act which pays homage to the wrestling/hardman personalities of old. I for one love to see it and understand (once he moves up to the great wrestling ring in the sky) the martial community will morn the passing of not just a great man but a bygone era in wrestling/grappling, fighting and the personalities therein. Long live Gene! ;)

I believe that Bruce Lee, Cesar Gracie, Mr. Gene Lebelle. Would all be the elite fighters of their day if they had had the fighting venues we have today. Just like the top fighters today they were the top fighters then. That means YES you would get your ass handed to you from anyone of them.

In his youth "Judo" Gene Lebell was KING in the WWA (a.k.a the Los Angeles Wrestling Territory). Not only is he a judo master but he was also a wrestling genius. A Kurt Angle of the 50's and 60's. Freddie Blassie claims in his BRILLIANT book "Listen You Pencil Necked Geeks" that if you ever had a guy who didn't want to lose a title (do a job) that all you needed was to put him against Gene, and that would solve the problem.

They all legit. They all get a plan until they get punch in a mouth. I can only preferred to get trained from real boxers or real UFC champions with over 100 legit fights on their belts. That the only way to defend yourself in real life situation. The rest i just watch same as movies. Just entertaining.

Gene Lebell is a legitimate tough as nails Martial Artist & fighter. The fight he had with that legitimate Boxer was much bigger than some knew as the Boxer had brass knuckles underneath his gloves, and Gene was still able to take him down, and choke him out for what would pave been a 200 count if someone bothered to count. Lol

No evidence of Brass knuckles whatsoever. The boxer was a past his prime retired journeyman with no Judo experience, and it took Gene over 20 minutes to submit him. The truth isn't as magical as the tall tale.

Love gene but he wasn't bruces instructor they worked mostly fight scenes together. This is while they worked on green hornet. Gene only started saying he was Bruce's instructor after bruce lee died. But bruce learned more grappling from Japanese judo Olympian and wally Jay. I'm not saying gene and bruce didn't show each other stuff but most it was tstuff for movies and working out together

People have wrote things about Gene Labell doubting his skills. But they never make a video testing him out. I was surprised people had doubts about Bruce Lee also caz he never entered a tournament. I never met Bruce Lee or Labell, but there is NO question in my mind that they are NO joke. Most people are JEALOUS of someone if they get more attention than others. I seen a video the other day when Gene Labell beat a PRO boxer. I guess fans were upset caz they were fans of the boxer. Edmondo

Helio accepted to fight Gene even if he was also much older, and asking Gene to drop down his weight is reasonable as weight counts a lot in grappling. Only Gene is making the excuse about his age to refuse the challenge. Cut the crap that Milo was a top ranked boxer, he wasn't anywhere near as good as he was in his prime. And Gene LeBell was also much bigger, that was not a formal competitive match like today's K1 or UFC as their physical conditions were not even.

But the age difference between Helio and Gene Lebell was lesser than Gene and Rickson. And the Gracies accepted the Challenge, asking Gene cut weight, LOL!!!! Where was the art of the smaller submitting the bigger??? LOL!!!! While Helio never fought an striker like Milo Savage, a top-10 ranked boxer. Gokor Chivichyan, Lebell pupil, told clearly that he wasnt allowed to enter UFC1, because Rorion wanted a Grappler vs Striker event, or at least a newaza specialist vs striker/grapplers.

People won t do that ... again, you probably don't know rickson gracie had already challeneged gene lebell but he just walked away with excuse about his age, and the most ridicuous thing is that lebell said he counter challenged helio gracie who was also a lot older than him, you can get it confirm from anyone of the gracie family members, yet none of them spoke about it publicly, this is what real respect is. anyone could look great in his self-made videos, what's the point?
