Fit for Adventure

Күн бұрын

This was everything I packed for my 17 days on the Cape Wrath Trail... and so much more. If you're thinking of doing it, I'm sharing tips, how I did my food, resupply points, navigation, where to charge stuff, clothing, footwear advice, and answering questions you sent me on Instagram.
So grab a brew, or maybe watch it whilst your cooking or something, it's a long but (hopefully) a useful one
🎗Charity fundraising link - www.justgiving...
☕️ Link for if you'd like to buy me a coffee - www.buymeacoff...
💧 Waterwell filter bottle affiliate link - orderwaterwell...
🗺OS maps app affiliate link -
tidd.ly/3oMzvO0
🥾 Boots - It seems I cut out the part where I said what my boots actually are 🤦🏼‍♀️ So they’re the Vivobarefoot Tracker Forest ESC. I’m an ambassador for Vivo, so have an affiliate code that gets you 10% off across the Vivobarefoot site…
Use code FITFORADVENTURE10 for 10% off Vivobarefoot 🥾
The rest of the kit -
I don't do Amazon affiliate links because I hate Jeff (and most billionaires tbh). I don't want you to give your money to him, and I don't want to profit from that either. So if you want any of the kit in this video, Google it and get it from anywhere but Amazon (you'll probably find it cheaper elsewhere anyway). Thanks 😂

I completed my first and only hike. Coast2Coast UK. Backpack Haglofs Lex 110. Day 1 weight 35+kg. I struggled to lift it. That’s including food and water. Day 14 when finished hike it was 30kg including water (4.5 litres). Weighted on scale. Yes I packed tins of food for whole hike. Including insane amount of energy bars, gels, sweets, avocados, onions and rhubarbs… 2 camping stoves and a saw just in case. Walking uphill was fun, even more hated steep downhills. Never again! My comfortable weight was about 20kg.

Fantastic video Sarah, your humour and information is a great mix! Looking forward to watching your trip later. It’s on my list of trails to do. The only thing I’d add about your thermos dilemma is to ditch it and the cook set and replace with a couple of titanium mugs with lids (750ml & 450ml) and make a pot cozy for the 750ml - that way you have the benefits and versatility of the thermos and cook set combo but without the weight/bulk 💡 👌

Fair play that pack was some carry! To pass the annual fitness test in the British Army you have to be able to complete a march of 8 miles in 2 hours carrying between 15kg and 25kg (approximately 33-55lbs) depending on the branch of the Army to which you belong. Infantry carry the full 25kg whereas Engineers and Medics carry the least at 15kg. Ive always said this girl is FIT! (In more ways than one 😊). Well done girl 👍👍

Thanks for this, the haze sponges look like a good addition for my next hike for tent and body drying, that's great. FYI I have always used a two person tent because thats what my partner and I have!! I use it when I go solo because I don't have the money to buy a one person tent, but ONE DAY!!!!!! I also take a light sarong, its very versatile and useful for all number of things, its my sheet when its too warm for sleeping bag, my towel (and has been my "emergency modesty wrap" as well when suddenly there were people trekking past and I was butt naked drying off next to a river haha. On a couple of hikes when the weather was blistering (YES!!! In Scotland) its proved useful for draping, wet, over my head under my cap and around my body like a cape to keep the sun off me and to cool me down. It dries off quickly too. I've even wrapped it around me as a skirt when I had to wash my shorts once or twice, so I never leave home without it!! I have the Sawyer mini water filtration system which I love, but thinking of the Platypus when its time to replace as I believe it filters a whole lot faster. Mind you, having said that, it give s me a good long time to soak my feet in the icy waters while filtering. My basic pack weight is always around 12kg with a few days dehydrated food but before water and I don't think I'll ever get it down any lower until I buy a lighter sleeping mat. Well done you!! And no, you didn't need the thermos haha!

I've just come across your video and I must say that it covers every question and answer you need to start hiking and camping. It is very much a game of whittling down to what you need, and you explain it very well, even with the Boeing 747 overhead. A lot of other videos cover personal choice but you seem to convey the essential reasons very well. Stuff that dries, doesn't smell, tastes good and works for each trip. The cook system is always the one that gets me, as I too like my porridge and coffee in the morning. Try a S2S mug for your coffee, you'll never go back. I'll check the rest of your content now definitely. ATB Leigh....

I use a liner in summer on it's own as I sleep very warm as a big wide lad. I can use a 2 season sleeping bag much of the year and only need a 3, 4 in mid winter. A liner, sleeping bag and bivvy bag in a tent or hammock with tarp does me. Yes SMIDGE I really hate insects, particularly those which fly. Good wee video thanks for posting. Baby wipes, I keep the used ones and burn them - I don't use them for bathroom admin.

I took a food flask on a (much shorter) hike recently and loved it. The same Thermos as yours, even the same colour. About 400g I think but it's really handy having flexibility about when you eat - you can make your coffee and porridge in the morning, and get a few miles under your belt before having the porridge if you want to.

I never use Talc anymore. I discovered a medicated for powder works much better. It's more absorbent and looks after your feet better. I also pour some of the powder into a zipped compression bag I have. Put my foot in and then massage & rub all over, that way you don't spill it over you tent floor. Something I read Ed Stafford did on his Amazon trek. I've used this way in the Himalayas, Lakes, Scotland but I'm lucky I don't get blisters. Certainly does revitalise your feet though

Weight - sounds about right to me to be safe and comfortable. I have a thing about people who must only carry 6kg in 3 weeks away in the woods. They buy the most expensive kit that weighs very little and lasts maybe 2 weeks or maybe three trips away before it needs seriously repairing or replacing. Far better to carry well, more weight and know it will last the trip. In storms it works and won’t be binned when you get home. Carry well = if it’s comfortable your fine carrying more. So it needs a touch of practice to do this and configuring your pack and its straps properly. The fear of weight is the only fear not the weight.

Great effort. I have had a good foot tip that can cut down on your bulk that you were carrying. Get a zip lock freezer bag which is big enough to fit your foot in. Fill it to about 1/4 with talcum/foot powder. When you come to admin your feet just put your foot inside the bag and apply the powder. This keeps the powder all in one place, reduces waste and is easier to pack as you do not have a plastic bottle to carry around. Lastly, I was always told spend my money on good boots and sleeping system as if you are not in one, you are in the other, but I think you have this already in hand. You could add a bivi bag which you keep your bag (no compression sac) in which means that it will be waterproofed in your pack. It will slightly increase your bulk though.

Oh my God :) still watching and LOVING the clothing blether removal bit. When I voice message friends and family I tend to waffle on for ages and then when I play it back I end up cancelling it and beginning again hahah. You are certainly entertaining as well as informative and I LOVE the honesty and total lack of pretentiousness. I never bother with those travel wash things. I have a plastic dropper bottle that I refill with Dr Bronner's Liquid Soap. You can wash your clothes, your hair, your body, your dishes and even brush your teeth with it.. and your pets and your carpet if you had the in that massive back pack haha). Its organic, fair trade, family owned, environmentally friendly ramble ramble. Its concentrated and a small bottle does everything.

I think a lot of people would be interested to hear more about those minimalist boots and how they stand up to serious hiking. I've been thinking about getting some for a while but often read that they aren't robust enough. If you keep walking in them please let us know how they last. Thanks.

Love your videos, shocked to hear about your sleep apnea, you are the only person I've heard experience it. I used to suffer from it regularly about 20 years ago interesting to hear that you think its stress related. Best wishes keep up the videos.

Wow what an absolutely fantastic, informative and amusing video. This is one I hope to do at some point. And what a small world. I almost choked on my brandy when you said your brother lives in East Kilbride. I was brought up in Calderwood and now live in Whitehills. Thank you again for an amazing video 👏

Beastie Be Gone is the cream you need to keep midges away. I went camping last year in August, and with beastie b gone I never even knew midges were there. Its great stuff, quite dear, but all organic, smells great as well... check it out.
