When talking about spark plugs cold or hot tells you how much heat the plug holds after combustion, low performance engines such as lawn mowers use really hot plugs meaning the heat stays in the plug instead of getting transferred to the engine case. High performance engines have cold plugs cylinder temps are high and the plug tries to move as much heat as possible into the case. Cold and hot does not have any relationship to the heat or intensity of the spark. If a hot plug is put in a high performance engine the internal resistance of the plug can become compromised giving you a much weaker spark. Sorry for the length great video

well to actually put some perspective on the topic of "short ram" intakes. i get the point, ebay is a BAD exmaple of getting a "cheap" intake for your car with cheap metal etc etc. BUT i did my research on my car specifically and found out that having a CAI in MY car specifically poses no difference in terms of power or anything due to my engine being naturally aspirated and with that being said, having just a short ram hooked up to my throttle body is slightly better as my "stock" intake is practically the same thing out of the gate. Just wanted to kind of put something out there. If you're gonna spend money on something, at least have the common decency to do your research on it, and for the record i spent $90-110 on my short ram (NOT FROM EBAY) and it actually works really well (aside form the induction noises) i've noticed slight increase in throttle response and some mpg increase. so for ME, it worked out in my favor :D

I disagree. A cold air intake(boxed off from the main part of the engine bay) is still going to provide gains(not much) but some. Reducing intake temps mean more air is metered by the maf. The colder the air, the more can get jammed into the cylinders so a good CAI is going to reduce the intake temp initially, allowing the intercooler to be more efficient and condensing the airflow. @jmackinjersey14 жыл бұрын
Yes, a CAI is going to work. But not the ones that you see in the video. Those are NOT sucking in cold air, rather hot air from under the hood. The stock set up is ten times better, even if it is a little more restrictive, since it is not sucking hot air into the engine. What he should have done was made it clear as to which ones actually work. Ones with a large heat shield and/or a box as well as a hole that allows cooler air in from the outside of the engine bay.

Do the oil changes and tire rotations on time, coolant flushes, transmission fluid change or flush (some debate on which one), etc. Get the car sorted before you start looking at performance parts. @@theleviathan282 Look for brands that are known to be quality and budget friendly to begin with, like Tein and Enkei and things like that. Most cars go through a cycle of modding where the owner first did minor mods like lowering springs but now went to full coilovers for example. So you can probably grab the lowering springs and struts off the guy for $70 or less since the guy upgraded to fancy Ohlins coilovers for example.

I agree other than the CAI, neither CAI or SRI's make any noticeably power gains. I personally got a SRI because I don't have to worry about water splashing under the bumper, it makes more audible intake noises, easier to clean without taking off bumper, and it saved me like 50 bucks (180 versus 230). Although, I guess it depends on the car. btw love your content keep it up.

@@shanebaronak1625 I have a turbo setup with Water-Methanol Injection so having a CAI doesn't do anything. The turbo is run very aggressivly and turns the air flaming hot anyway. then my intercooler helps to bring those temps down and then the 50% water evaporates to remove some of the heat while the 50% methanol gets combusted and further lowers the heat within the cylinder. I only got it to increase flow to the turbo, not because I care about sucking in cold air. If my car was non-turbo I would definitely not be using a SRI.

My brother-in-law had a long running joke with his mom's bf: "I replaced a chip in my car" "A chip, you mean like a potato chip?" And they'd riff from there- if it makes it run hotter or cooler, how does the chip know what tempature it is, etc. They got the biggest kick out of performing this routine at the dinner table. I have no idea what the damn thing actually did to the car, but talking about it would make them laugh, and the whole family laugh, every holiday we'd get together. I'd say that made it well worth the price!

spark plugs and spark plug wires upgrades were suppose to compliment nitrous kits. I found a site that sells nitrous kit and they recommend spark plug and spark plug wires to be changed for a normal engine to handle a 50 hp shot of nitrous. the site in question is called Proimporttuners. it's in their Q&A section when you click on a nitrous kit.

After seeing the difference in the filtration of OEM style intake filters versus most aftermarket media I'm happy to stick with stock intakes for everyday use. Affordable and you can replace them instead of cleaning your old one. If it becomes a restriction then you should consider aftermarket options, but until them I'd stick with OEM style filters. Every car I buy gets some Denso Iridium spark plugs first thing (NGK as a secondary option) if I plan to keep it for any length of time. The new twin tips are pretty nice and the mpg gains will make them pay for themselves. It's just standard maintenance stuff. Best performance mods for people that drive used cars; bushings, motor/transmission mounts, ball joints, tie rods, shocks/struts, gaskets, brakes, etc. It's amazing some of the "built" cars I see running around with some sketchy suspension handling yet have motor work and coilovers. Then go get an alignment by a reputable shop.

Excellent points all around. At the risk of stating the brutally obvious, platforms differ especially when it comes to making power. Just because a given part was beneficial on your last car, it doesn't mean that it will also produce gains on your next car. How would you know which parts you need? Go to the forum. Not a FB group, even though I admin several, but the actual web-based discussion forum. Try not to have a horsepower goal in mind. We can discuss the latter in detail, if you prefer. Let me give a couple examples from the Evolution community. These are the parts needed to uncork the motor: Evo VIII - boost controller, fuel pump, the diverter valve from a IX, turbo back exhaust, a tune, and 272 cams are optional. Evo IX - boost controller, turbo back exhaust, and a tune. A fuel pump may or may not be needed. Say you want to add some pretty intercooler piping. It won't do a thing for power at this level. The upper intercooler pipe doesn't make power in any state of tune. Lower, a little if you're moving a lot more air. How about a VTA BOV? Some folks love the sound, but it will make your Evo run like crap. The point is, the intrecacies of a given platform aren't necessarily apparent without looking deeper. Good luck.

A short ram cold air mod does work. But only if. 1. You heat wrap the tube with thermo tape or some other insulator. 2. The Ram intake cone is in its own insulated box. 3. * You have some kind of vent, scoop (what ever) that feeds the thing from out side air. Thus the reason it would need the moisture barrier sleeve. If your cars hood is notably scoop free and there are no vents in your fender then get the longer tube version and run that bad boy as far away from where the heat comes from as you can. Also heat wrapping alone is cheap and very effective. Even on a stock intake for efficiency reason it will help your intake maintain a more even and cooler temperature which can make the engine run more efficiently. As far as plugs go it should be noted that beside having the correct plugs for your temperature range you also want reliable plugs. Spark plugs them selves will not necessarily change the HP out put of your engine however they can greatly affect combustion efficiency. If you are just daily driving this is not as worry some and simple single or double post standard range plugs will do. But, if you plan on working that engine out like the transporter running from a mob boss then having quad post plugs of the appropriate material type and temperature range can prevent misfires, wasted fuel, and back wash into the throttle body. Alternately putting higher quality plug wires on CAN affect these same performance factors however those pretty color coated cheapo's from auto zone or discount parts . com ain't it and wont do anything of note. In fact they may make things worse for your engine since they are selling you the coating color not the core and many times under that matched skin is the cheapest filament they could use with violating consumer laws. What you want are the shortest plug wires possible with the best quality insulator, and filament material to better transmit the electricity to the plugs. Trust that any one that matters looking at your engine will be more impressed to see quality over visual coordination. I completely agree with the fan thing assessment. unless it happens to be connected to the crank and pull its own air to add to the intake which is to say a super charger. There are a few innovators experimenting with compressed air systems that look very interesting to say the least but none of them are really ready for the larger consumer market, and they do not yet have models for vehicles below what I call the Z line. (Z line: a purpose built sport vehicle such as the Nissan Z which produces 350 or more HP and costs 50k or more) I use the Nissan Z because of all purpose built sport vehicles the Nissan Z can never be anything else with its 2 cubic foot of trunk space and only having 2 seats. Not that the back seats in a corvette, hell cat, or WRX could fit more than a short 3 year old.
@polacoloco20105 жыл бұрын
Short Ram Intakes don't add any noticeable power and in some naturally aspirated engines may even subtract (hot air from the engine bay). Turbocharged engines on the other hand do benefit from SRI due to the increase in air flow, and brathing hot air from the engine bay doesn't change anything because the turbo is already hot as hell and the air then gets cooled by the intercooler anyway. So SRI for Turbos, CAI for naturally aspirated. And on the matter of spark plugs, if you recently reprogramed your ECU or installed a performance chip (like I did with my DS3) you might want to do some reasearch in what sparkplugs better accomodate you new program (RCZ spark plugs in my case)

I installed the SLAP CHOP into my 94 Pontiac Grand Prix SE and I’ll tell you what. I don’t know if it was bcuz I was slamming my foot thru the fire wall bcuz I KNEW how much power that it was forcing into my engine. It was manhandling the engine the same way it manhandled eggs and knocked the shells off and made egg salad. Pickles and relish were flying out of the FLOW MASTERS that prob robbed more back pressure from that car bcuz the fkn pipes were huge. Thinking back they looked like 4” waste pipes on each side lmao. And the 3M adhesive hood scope with no access to the engine. That was creating the down force I needed to not “pop wheelies” as I was warned could occur without the factory spoiler and hood scope combo. Thankfully the black out light covers I had on the front , with those recessed square headlights , making the installation the most difficult mod ever. I hear harder than an engine swap. But it reduced my drag coefficient by .00001. And that was well worth it !! I also drove around with my fat friend, Anferny to help lower my ride height , Ultimately making the car way more aero dynamic and we put it on the DYNO with Anferny in the car. It def had more power to the wheels. That and the sand bags for traction in the trunk. People said “that’s a front wheel car. What the eff are you doing? “. Everyone is a critic. Those back wheels never lost traction or spun out. I guess we know who was right after all!! Noobs. 🙄😁🤓

One of the best mods you can do to an engine for damn near free is porting and polishing. That of course is assuming you understand how to port and polish and have the tools. It's more common on older cars to have done because there's more improvement to be had with more restrictive and rougher ports. Of course, you aren't looking to increase the size of the ports necessarily, but you're looking to smooth out the transitions in the ports so there's less turbulence. Leave somewhat of a rougher finish on the intake so fuel doesn't puddle on TBI, MPI, or Carb'd setups, but you can put a near mirror finish on the exhaust. Best way to practice is pick up some junk heads that are identical for super cheap and get to cutting.
