DSG is a beast with a tune. I'm Stage 2 with EQT and their DSG tune and it's perfect. Aftermarket manual clutches on these can be hit or miss and the "best one" depends on your needs. If you never want to go above a Stage 2, you can make a TTRS clutch work for a stock like driving experience. Otherwise you're swapping to single mass flywheel life and you're gonna have to deal with some driveline chatter. Plus you run a higher risk of thrust bearing wear with aftermarket clutches. I won't blame anyone for getting a manual MK7, but it's simply a case of choosing one of the best affordable automatic in the world that takes to mods easily or a wholly mediocre manual that needs some work to handle mods. I daily my DSG and I'm looking for a manual weekend car. Best of both worlds.
@rodriguezsax2 жыл бұрын
A southbend stage 2 or 3 clutch will handle whatever you'd like to do, last a long time, and be easy to daily drive. I've heard nothing but horror stories about the "weak manuals" and "faster dsg" but I smile from ear to ear every time I rip through the canyons in my 6mt GTI. No complaints here. The DSG is amazing but I enjoy rowing my own gears. To each their own, we're lucky to have so many options.

They also benefit from the large amounts of input and feedback they get from their customer base. The tolerances of these motors are known to be very consistent from one to another, making it fairly safe to grab a well-developed OTS file and slap it on your car. Of course, there's different requirements for each stage and often times there will be different files for that stage (such as if you have an upgraded HPFP vs. Stock for a Stage 2 file), but unless you're going big turbo a custom tune really isn't all that necessary with these cars unless you're tuning for something specific like MPI or WMI. A couple reputable companies would be Equilibrium Tuning, Integrated Engineering, APR, as well as others.

Daily drive a 2020 GTI that's Stage 2 EQT tuned on Ampliforms lol. Video is pretty much spot on, except APR is overrated. There's nothing they sell anymore that another company doesn't offer a better version of, usually at a lower price. They don't sell downpipes or Stage 2 tunes anymore either. Also the AP is great, but use it to get another company's tune (like EQT) don't run Cobb's tunes. They're pretty mediocre and like to knock. MAPerformance isn't a popular company with MK7s. CTS and ARM downpipes are popular cheap options while IE and Trackslag are popular more premium downpipes. Intakes are a waste. Only buy one if you want choo-choo noises. Lastly a rear sway bar is the best upgrade for any FWD hot hatch. Get that back end rotating.

Disagree with the APR statement. Their Intercoolers, downpipes, coil packs, Catch Cans, are all the industry best. Their cold air intake does suck though. I'm on an EQT tune now, but I loved my APR stage 1&2 tunes. Zero check engine lights. The same cannot be said about my EQT experience.
@clutchthepearls30622 жыл бұрын
@@deanmarr785 They don't make downpipes anymore and coil packs are worthless. OEM is best. DO88 is the favorite intercooler. Catch can is about the only thing they actually do the best. Everything else you can get just as good or better elsewhere, often for less money. Their tunes are fine. If you're getting a CEL on EQT you probably need to use better gas. I get knock with Kroger gas, none when I got to Shell. That's the price of having a more aggressive tune.
@deanmarr7852 жыл бұрын
@@clutchthepearls3062 Please spare me your advice. You could not be more wrong about the intercooler and coil packs. I'm one of the lucky guys that has an APR downpipe. Run along now and mind your own business.

@AaronHalpin2 жыл бұрын
What about it? The MK6 is also a good car but has a few other quirks to look for. The body panels are a little thinner on the MK6 which means that proper fitment is going to be a little more important so you do not damage your wheel wells. The MK6 also has the ea888.1 engine, not the ea888.3. The Gen 1 engine was known early on to have timing chain issues due to the tensioner. If you buy (or have bought) a MK6 GTI...have someone inspect the tensioner to make sure it was replaced with the revised version. Aside from that...everything else is about the same, and there are still a lot of performance parts available for the Gen 1 2.0T engine.

Don't sleep on a front sway bar! The rear sway bar upgrade is great, but the front does wonders as well. If you own an early model non-performance package gti consider an lsd! The two bars and the lsd do some crazy work for me at the track whether stock power or tuned.
