A cheap and easy mod to consider for owners is the add-in or replacement of the dogbone mount / pendulum mount. Can help reduce a lot of wheel hop in these cars. Definitely made a big difference for me. Also worth looking at the OBDEleven or Carista devices that plug into your OBD port and connect to your phone via Bluetooth. Using them allow you to change a lot of the settings for your car, including tweaking aspects like throttle sensitivity and aggressiveness of the electronic LSD in the performance pack models. But can also be used to configure things such as lights and indicator behavior, or simply displaying the fan strength when the climate control is on auto mode.

@eppyz Жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but even without OBD11 when you switch from Eco, Normal and Sport modes, the Diff and throttle response changes anyway. What OBD11 can do, is make it so you have even more of a sensitive throttle, of which is not always a good thing. OBD11 was nice to do mods like the rolling of the windows with the key fob, ESC OFF and the A/C for Hotter climates mod to me were the most helpful thus far.

Thank you guys for covering this video and you are spot on with GTI mods to improve it. The MQB GTIs sre the best they've ever been. For the people who own a MK7 / 7.5 GTI with a proper 6 speed manual gearbox, consider the following mods for the best / fastest shifting and feel: BFI weighted knob, Short shifter, CDV delete w/ ECS bleeder block, replace stock clutch with an upgraded one from a reputable brand, and switch from Dual mass to single mass flywheel (optional). I daily drive an EQT Stage 2 GTI and I also have no-lift shift and launch control, basically rendering all the merits of a DSG useless, while having a way more engaging car to drive anywhere. Even a stock 6 speed manual car is a hoot to drive, like a hot hatch should be. From my exprience owning 6 GTIs and running them in all kinds of conditions (including track), EQT tunes are the smoothest and best. Finally, invest in OBDEleven or Ross Tech cable / software, to make sure you can fully defeat the ESC / Traction control etc. Lots of cool stuff you can do with something like VCDS. I grew up tuning Hondas and GTIs brought me back to the wonderful days of tuning and aftermarket stuff. Cheers !!
@vxsr33 Жыл бұрын
As much as I love manual and will always stick to it.The DSG is a huge part of what makes these cars so rapid. Whilst you can make shifting in a manual better with shifter mods, clutch mods and no lift shift, it still wont match to how fast the DSG is especially if the DSG is tuned for even more aggressive shifts.

@AngySumo Жыл бұрын
@djcarlitosatl crankwalk took out the engine. I had a beefy aftermarket clutch on the manual with an aggressive flash tune (EQT stage 2), and almost 3 years of occasional 0-60(mph) launches and highway pulls, other than that was just a daily getting a lot of miles on it. The engine popped at 110,000 miles, even though car was maintained quite well. Some people point to the oil I used (Liquimoly), others blame it on the clutch (south bend stage 3), and others blame it on the tune. At the end of the day I think it wasn't the tunes fault, it's a bad thrust washer design from the factory, with only a couple ways to *try* to prevent the failure, that I didn't even try to do; because I thought it was a rare failure. It turns out it's not as rare as most of us vw guys will try to say lol

I had a K04 MKV GTI for 205k miles and thought it was the best daily driver out there. Now I have a 530whp MK7 GTI and now think this is the best daily driver out there. This video is good for a lot of the cookie cutter nuance, but in my experience, things like intake, intercooler, downpipe, and cat-back make a HUGE difference. I love the MCM guys, but I've had to buy 3 separate intakes, 2 different intercoolers, 2 different charge pipe sets, and a cat-back exhaust while trying to free up wastegate duty cycle issues and holding up to 35psi of boost. If I had known to just buy the biggest damn intake out there and not the nicest looking, I wouldn't have had to waste time and money. I think more time should be spent with these topics instead of telling people that intakes add no power. I personally made 25whp and lowered my wgdc by 25% just by switching from the APR closed intake to the IEV2.
@nathanbee4597 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know when chasing big power, you need big supporting mods. Yes i understand pressure drop and back pressure. I'm guessing you're from the US and not Australia with the 530whp figure. Have you done any draggy 60-130mph or 1/4 mile?

@ssjneko1 Жыл бұрын
@@nathanbee4597 you're correct, but my point is that if someone's making a definitive video on the GTI, then it should be definitive and not giving people bad advice. More time could be spent on a follow-up video and go over items like back pressure and common failure points like the PCV, waterpump, spark plugs, and fueling system. I love the GTI and just want it done right. My best 60-130 on E85 is 7.51s w/ a -1800DA and -.19 slope. It's 7.96s with a +1600DA. On 93 octane it's 8.59s. My car is an Autohahn too, so heavier than I'd like. And I don't really do 1/4 mile times because of the FWD, but I'll typically trap between 129 and 131 depending on grip. My best in Dragy is 12.61@128.7, but that's with a whopping sample source of 4 attempts, lol. My best 1/4 with an IS38 was 12.8s@118.9mph, lol. Grip is not my friend.
@ssjneko1 Жыл бұрын
@@R03333 yeah, it's meant for highway rolls w/ my buddies. Most of the time it's on 93 octane and making 455whp though. The turbo is the Vortex XL, and honestly feels very similar to the IS38, but with a bit more lag and a hell of a lot more pull. I was making more torque w/ the regular IS38 on E85 (392whp/428wtq) than the XL on 93 (455whp/415wtq). On E85 it's 528whp/448wtq, but that's with a dyno in the winter. In summer it's more like 510-515whp. For tires, I'm running Michelin PS4s on an 8.5" wheel, so it grips just fine for 3rd gear rolls. I'd say 45-50mph is the sweet spot.

Used to own a mk4 GTI, then got another Mazdaspeed6 and built that up, just bought a mk7 GTI and love it, it’s such a connected feeling car and so nimble. I can’t wait to get an accessport and start getting to work haha.

I drive a '16 MK7 PP, 4door, Manual, DCC, 18'' rims, Pikey 600 and clubsport muffler. All the right noises! But my major surprise was that I never thought that I would like the DCC so much. With MQB you can always go the rabbit hole with OEM parts like the alu audi parts.

The difference between FWD and AWD in a climate where snow is rare is how soon and how hard you want to understeer. An AWD tends to understeer a bit strongly at the start, but will become neutral fairly soon, when going through a hard corner. A FWD will tend to understeer at least as hard as an AWD at first, maybe harder, and keep doing so until you lift. My Subaru Outback (BH) with the 'All Weather Package' (rear LSD) does a great job of going from some understeer to neutral on steady power or very careful powering through, and with some care, you can even power into some oversteer - but you better hang on! My old FWD hatchback (you'd probably know it as a Mitsubishi Mirage or Colt) was an understeer forever car.

I have a JDM Subaru B4 RSK ( BE) with rear LSD too, i barely understeer compared to the shitty Golf 7 GTI that struggle on corner. My B4 and old Renault Megane 3 RS were faster on corners i used to take at 100 kph on winter tires, meanwhile the GTI was understeering like crazy at 90 kph on OEM summer tires lol. For the Legacy, after awhile you can easily oversteer when you are used to the car turbos, especially when it is wet and the chassis is amazing.

You didn't lie one bit. I had a 2015 GTI with full intake, 3" turbo back, twintercooler and an is38 with apr tune and even on 93 octane it made crazy power, and was way quicker than you'd have expected. Super fun platform, great aftermarket and potential. A few VW quirks that you either accept, or turn you away from them completely, but if you learn to live with it, they will make your drives very fun.

I have my 2019 GTI with full APR software up to stage 2, I gotta admit, their full downpipe and catback exhaust is maybe a little droney at 2500-3000rpm, especially on freeways. Mines a manual so not having a 7th gear might be a reason but I’d recommend sticking with picking up a downpipe and don’t bother with the rest of the exhaust, unless you’re fine with your ears hurting on road-trips!

Owned a MK3 for years and just recently sold my MK5 GTI. Ive been shopping around for a MK7 so this video was perfect and got me really excited. Sadly the average MK7.5 is out of my price range (cap 20k USD) but im hoping to find a good deal from waving cash in someones face.

my mk3 5 door Golf Celebration, that i fully VR6 swapped, is an unbelievably usable car. the Celebration was a 2.slo model for the USA, but i did a full chassis/wire/engine swap to VR6, upgraded the interior to leather door cards, late model cabriolet dash, upper and lower glove boxes, 5 speed o2a manual with upgraded sachs clutch, full techtonics 2.5 inch exhaust with magnaflow poofs out the back, and i use 2 different sets of mk4-era VW oem wheels (normal driving is Beetle "focus" wheel painted in slate gray, shows is Jetta Bora BBS 16" 2pc) and a b4 passat wheel 15" for winter tires. they fit great, look fantastic, and if they do get damaged, im not out huge money and can quickly replace one. i use nitto neo-gen2 tires on both of the 16s, and hankook optimos for the winter setup. all have served me very well in all weather conditions. suspension is an H&R street spring kit over oem bilstein shocks. the ride is very comfortable, about 1.5" lower than stock, but still high enough to traverse terrible Nebraska roads and snow, and when you chuck it into a corner, it hunkers down and GRIPS. i have a nice 3600W sound system in it, and still have plenty of boot space for the family shops run, and my daughter's car seat matches the colors in my oem "sport plaid" buckets. it is the perfect car for my family. it's fun, quick, sounds amazing, reliable (even with 198k miles on the clock) and turns heads from the local sports car kids. it's great having a "cool" car that is still just my kid hauler and grocery getter!

14:43 Mk7 (2012-18) will be CXCA/CXCB engines, which run 5W-40 oil. Only the DKFA engine runs 0W-20, which you will need to upgrade to 5W-30+ for heavy performing.

Epic vid. Looking at one as a daily now that modified vehicles are deemed unroadworthy in cape town, South Africa. I would love to see a diesel on the show like an BMW F30 330d or something that's massively under rated. As always love the content🎉

MK5 GTI here, bloody loving it. Always looking for cosmetic small mods. Done the big things like ko4 swap. It's the small things such as GTI branded cup holder inserts that i am working on now. Really want to get into 3D printing to make some unique stuff. I do wish they made the golf in RWD though, feels tight driving them and solid dont get me wrong but man i miss RWD/AWD. I did think about buying a 4motion and sticking a GTI engine in it but the expense is not worth it i could just buy a BMW 140i or something. The crazy thing about the golf is the people who own them. Everyone who speaks to me about a golf and owns one seems crazy into them, they are always suggesting mods and some of them are just nuts. Never seen such a big modding community around a car. Even the 4x4 world is not this bad. I owned a bunch of land rovers in my time and yeah nothing on the vw community at all. They even have festivals near me (more than 1) just dedicated to old VW's!

Fwd vs awd: if you live in a more dry climate region yes fwd makes sense. Like for example the southern part of europe, california, texas "most" parts of australia, ... but if you live in a region where it is wet or damp regularly on the street, or even snowy some weeks of the year: I would recommend the awd version. Sold my mazda speed 3/mazda 3 mps because of that 😢...

I have a 3 door mk7 gti and I nearly skipped on it because I really wanted a 5 door. Sometimes, one of my two kids need to get in the back, but it's all good. Grabbing the seat belt is bit of a chore and I was worried about the looks. But it grows on you very quickly. If you ever see a 3 door that fits all of your demands, just take it. It's worth it, although I still believe 5 doors is better, it's not too big of a problem to skip out on a good deal
