I remember reading a passage in ‘the art of learning’ by Josh Waitzkin. He was injured and had a cast on one of his arms. He was thinking about the injured limb while training the uninjured one. He had some of those miracle results not atrophying much. Puzzling surgeons type of results. I know this isn’t related to the video directly but adjacently. Interesting little tidbit.

Interesting experiment! I am training my whole body for 25 years; strength training, cardio, and Armwrestling specific excercises the last years. However, a lot of energy is consumed by that combination, but I believe in it for overall health reasons . It is surprising to see how much mass, strength you can hold in your upper body and left arm without specific training. I find it also unbelievable how you can keep pulling hours and days in a row. After a intensive training session I am sore for at last a week, mostly in my elbows. Me and some friends started Armwrestling years ago because of you. You triggered and motivated us, thank you Devon!

Devon, being a relatively new puller ( w/ ozark mountain arm wrestling) but also someone with lifting experience ( Olympic Lifting(but not competitive)) i think you're hitting the nail on the head. IMO, what you're experiencing is the effect on your Central Nervous System (CNS) You're training and fatiguing your right more often then your left, therefore your muscles and mental reactions on your left are more "fresh" albeit not as strong due to tendon strength and conditioning on your right. Kinda hard to explain in a youtube message but if you think about it i bet it makes some sense. KEEP ROLLING RCR!!!!
@christianvance2266
@christianvance2266 Жыл бұрын
I'd say this is correct, but only as a contributing factor to something else. That being because his left is considerably more sedentary(at least compared to the right) his muscle fiber composition has deferred back to a more 'neutral' state, with a different ratio of slow to fast twitch fibers; a ratio which skews more to the fast twitch(again, at least compared to the right), because even despite the hypertrophic stimulus to create fast twitch fiber as a consequence of resistance training, the training of an arm wrestler, especially one prioritizing such high volume, is more likely to stimulate production of slow twitch fibers, and moreover, modification of the preexisting fibers to sustain work. If you have any thoughts on that, I'd love to dive deeper, or consider other things

Hi Devon! Do you think that your right might be slower than your left because your right is so strong? You're always going to be the strongest guy at practice so all you can do is hold your opponents in place and let them work. You probably don't get to train your hit very often. But, since your left is weaker maybe you have to armwrestle more aggressively with it. That's just my thought on the difference in speed between left and right hand.

Have you had any stem cells in the party arm? Since armwrestling practice is the most precise form of training and that's the only stimulation the left arm gets, the CNS is only primed for armwrestling movements making it more responsive. The right arm your brain has gather everything it knows then filter it into the correct movement. I doubt that there's more fast twitch in your left. But it's an interesting experiment.

Hi, person who has studied muscle science here. Our bodies are adaptation machines- I.e, how you train is what you will get. Generally speaking, the arm that gets more resistance training will be tighter and may be slower as a result. Deep tissue massage therapy is a great remedy for this. Besides this, there is the factor of how you train. Not just sets and reps(which does matter) but also speed of reps completed. Muscle innervation by nerves, especially as the muscles grow, requires “practice” for a movement to be executed most efficiently. What that practice looks like, in terms of reps sets and speed influences the outcome of performance. For powerlifting, athletes try to complete movements explosively with lots of speed- this is not easy for a body builder or your average joe. At first it feels clunky and weird and you don’t get all muscles firing. If you’re worried about speed, work in speed exercises so those muscles can learn to be explosive.

This is interesting. I've watched a couple of your pumpkin training videos and it reminds me of the tales written about archers back in ancient times and how freakishly imbalanced they looked practicing their draw with one arm every day, but how incredibly strong and exceptional they were in close quarters combat with a sword compared to front line soldiers.

People who dont have one arm get stronger in other arm. People who lose ability to use legs gain power in arms that they never had when they had used their legs. People who are blind hear better vice versa. This training make sense. But if your into normal bodybuilding you should do everything symmetrical.
@AlvaroLand
@AlvaroLand Жыл бұрын
My hypothesis: Your right arm is specialised in motor unit recruitment. According to Henneman's size principle: "The higher the recruitment the stronger the muscle contraction will be. Motor units are generally recruited in order of smallest to largest (smallest motor neurons to largest motor neurons, and thus slow to fast twitch) as contraction increases." which could explain why an arm that is heavily specialised in motor unit recruitment could develop many motor units that end taking more time to contract. I'm not sure if that makes sense but something tells me the reason is related to it.

Archaeologists looking at their skeletons nowadays can show physical differences in the bones from their right and left sides. Due to the asymmetrical stresses placed upon their bodies over years of archery when alive. Fascinating.

This training has been fascinating. I'm curious though if these fast twitch muscles can be trained with your Pumpkin training just like a sprinter trains or Olympic lifter. You just incorporate specific exercises to work on fast twitch. I'm not sure what that would be or if you can get electrodes hooked up to see some type of activation or what exercises work best. Maybe you can keep Pumpkin training and still boost speed.

There are two primary types of skeletal muscle fibers: slow-twitch (Type I) and fast-twitch (Type II) fibers. Here's a brief overview of these fiber types and their characteristics: Slow-Twitch (Type I) Muscle Fibers: These fibers are more fatigue-resistant and are designed for endurance activities. They contract more slowly but can sustain contractions for longer periods. Slow-twitch fibers are rich in mitochondria, which are responsible for aerobic energy production. People with a higher proportion of slow-twitch fibers may excel in endurance sports like long-distance running or cycling. Fast-Twitch (Type II) Muscle Fibers: These fibers contract more rapidly and generate greater force, making them well-suited for explosive and high-intensity activities. Fast-twitch fibers can fatigue more quickly than slow-twitch fibers. There are two subtypes of fast-twitch fibers: Type IIa (intermediate) and Type IIx (fastest). Type IIx fibers generate the most force but fatigue the quickest. Individuals with a higher proportion of fast-twitch fibers may have greater potential for muscle size and power. The proportion of slow-twitch to fast-twitch muscle fibers can vary among individuals due to genetic factors. Some people naturally have a higher percentage of one fiber type over the other, which can influence their athletic abilities and muscle-building potential. However, it's important to note that genetics is just one factor, and training, nutrition, and lifestyle choices also play significant roles in determining an individual's muscle size and strength. While you can't change your genetic predisposition regarding muscle fiber types, you can still make significant improvements in your muscle size and strength through proper training, nutrition, and consistent effort, regardless of your initial fiber type distribution. Training strategies can be adapted to target specific goals and optimize your genetic potential.

I'd like to add to the influence of strength training on contraction velocity: During the time I was javelin throwing I gained very little increase in throwing distance, even though I was putting on size and strength (massive increase due to puberty). Why did my throwing velocity not increase over time? The training was predominantly bench pressing and push ups, because at the time I didn't know any better. Both these exercises require not nearly the speed that javelin throwing did, so naturally I gained only strength, not speed. How to fix this? You can keep on building contraction velocity by training as explosively as you can with lighter/no weights. This will engage the type IIx muscle fibers, whereas normal strength training will initially only engage type IIa and IIb muscle fibers. Mind you these muscle fibers are meant to only be activated during kicking, throwing, sprinting and jumping, so you'll have to move at those speeds to engage them. Also - as Devon has found out - you can increase the relative IIx muscle fiber amount by doing nothing. To avoid injury with this type of training; train maximal strength (high and low volume) as well to increase load tolerance
@davidstevens9605
@davidstevens9605 Жыл бұрын
Endurance training will change fiber type. From type 2 to type 1. That would possibly make a difference in the motor skill of an initial hit. All the table time on the right might have changed those fibers types to more endurance based. No different then long distance runners. More mitochondria are produced within the muscle cell, helps with creation of ATP and reduction of the fatigue. The right ultimately should be stronger in slow pulls because of the hypertrophy of the muscle fibers, also the motor pathways laid down from the heavy resistance training. The left could be faster due to more of the fibers being type 2 in that movement. Weaker in slow pulls due to lack of muscle fibers and gets gassed faster due to zero adaption of the muscle fibers at the cellular level. Type 2 are quick but easily fatigued.

Devon, I agree with you on the matter of being more responsive and faster with the body part you don’t train nearly as much. When I was full-body training really frequently and intensely for about three years my body was in a constant state of inflammation. I looked great on the outside but I felt burned out and constantly worn out on the inside. When I stopped training altogether for three weeks because I was in the process of relocating, I noticed all my nagging injuries didn’t bother me, especially my lower back. And I was faster and more responsive overall. I discovered this when I began hitting the punching bag at my new location. In contrast, I attempted to hit the bag at my old location once before I began my workout and the jarring I felt in my bones and muscles were too much for me to want to continue. Basically, all that persistent inflammation prevented me from being able to take impact to my body and to be faster and more responsive. That’s why athletes taper their training before competition as you well know. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Very interesting hypothesis from this experiment. seriously scientists should be jumping all over this. I don’t believe there any other examples of this on the planet especially on this level of the same human body on both extremes.

Density of the Muscle. The thicker dense muscle moves slower. That's why heavy weight training is not recommended in fighting sports it can Slow you down especially your Striking.

With this kind of training, it stands to reason that fast twitch would suffer. Armwrestling is a relatively slow loading sport, and weights and resistance are also slow, so specializing in that should make the muscles adapt to being slow.

It is not new info that training one side of your body will stimulate the other to some degree- so your left arm has been benefiting (to some degree) from the right side stimuli

The left is faster becoz it's tissues are more flexible or fluid. The right is being optimized for static heavy work load so ofcus it's slower. It's also more dense.

It sounds like the SAID principle in action (specific adaptation to the imposed demand). You're training your left arm, just in a different way. The arm wrestling training is presumably more ballistic in nature. The weight training on your right arm is slower and more controlled. Therefore, the arm adapts accordingly.

I do a variation of this. After injuring my left wrist and forearm, it doesn’t grow the way my right does. I still do normal workouts with both, but arm wrestling specific stuff I do only on the right. There’s a 2-2 1” difference in forearm now. The strength difference is substantial though.

Training muscle helps them fire in coordination much better. And you get a better connection.

I really think it boiles down to recovery, your left response is faster because all tissue could recover and form tighter bonds. In a way, you could say it is a trade off, conditioning over response and explosivity, but I still think there is an optimal balance to be achieved, where you fatigue enough to endure but not so much to deplete. Finding that piont is key
