Seriously Devon listen, there’s a very simple connection you have to make. - Your right is as you said “overtraining” - Your left was given training volume through armwrestling and got ADEQUATE rest You just need to understand that while it may seem unintuitive, resting is the key. You’re constantly breaking your body down and not allowing it to recover and come back stronger in the best way it can. Keep training, it will of course benefit you, you just need to LEARN HOW TO TAKE A BREAK. Luv ye, but this is quite simply just how strength training works. Now there’s a point to be made about certain body parts being able to recover from more volume and certain people benefit more from certain Intensity/Volume relations aswell as joint and bone strength having different criteria for growing stronger in an optimal way, but science has this largely figured out already...

It's not easy for people who work really hard to take a break, they feel like resting is being lazy when in actuality it's just being smart, it's a marathon not a race, no one is gonna surpass you that fast just because you took a little break.
@evanjones60913 жыл бұрын
I agree that rest is important but For the sake of discussion, I will give a counter-argument. Lots of skill sports have no upper limit for volume and the athletes can train all day every day. stuff like tennis, billiards, soccer etc. No doubt arm wrestling has a higher intensity, but it is a skill. In a way, you are learning through doing which is always going to be more applicable and specific than trying to mimic arm wrestling with weights. Some of the most incredible gains to be had are neurological (essentially forming a stronger connection between your brain and the muscles to get a more powerful contraction). Repeating a technique or "greasing the groove" by using regular training can make you much stronger in a very specific way without even taking into account strength gains in the muscles themselves Then there are strength athletes who train lifts every day using a Bulgarian style. Lots of Olympic weightlifters squat every single day and get great strength adaptations from the crazy stimulus. Eric Bugenhagen performs the same few heavy compound lifts for weeks in a row until his body stops adapting and improving. The interesting thing is your left hand has been adapting well using only arm wrestling-specific training. As you suggested in the video, there might be something to that. Perhaps you should choose arm-wrestling as the main training type if possible, and then supplement with weights/cables, etc to make up enough volume for each week. if you have an easy session on the table, then smash the weights. If the table is a challenge then maybe back off a bit on the weight training.

Hey Devon, thought it might be interesting for you to understand a cool thing we're really just learning about in kinesiology. Unilateral strength training has very positive results on the other side of your body! When trained people injure an appendage and continue to the same appendage on the other side, they usually lower the rate of strength loss tremendously on the injured side. And when untrained people injure an appendage and begin to train the same appendage on the other side, they usually increase their strength on the injured side! Maybe your left arm is benefiting from your right arm training a bit, while staying fresh and rested.

I find myself giving 1-3 months at times for time to heal from those injuries. And I do absolutely nothing until I am healed. When I come back after I am 100%. I am so strong and I feel so good, Its like all that rest I was forced to give my body, made me so much stronger when I came back. I think we take resting for granted. I find your theories on training and experience testing this fascinating. What if you did cycles of "Way of the Pumpkin" where say 3 months right arm then rest it and train left hard. Maybe you will grow 2 pumpkins or see better results. Remember sometimes you gotta pick that pumpkin at the right time or it rots on the vine if there for too long. So maybe shorter pumpkin training cycles for maximum results. Also good luck and stay strong for the match can't wait to see it.

Very interesting theory! My take on it is how does someone become the best basketball player they can be? You could make the argument that all you have to do is play as much competitive 5v5 possible, which of course will lead to great improvements, but there is so much that goes into basketball: Speed, quickness, vertical leap, shooting, passing, dribbling, etc. Therefore you need specialized training at times designated for just shooting, or just dribbling, or just athleticism, or whatever skill you are trying to improve. Therefore my takeaway is this: To be the best armwrestler you can be, you absolutely have to have tons of experience on the table and just armwrestling people. Just like to be a great basketball player you need to spend time playing 5v5 competitively. However like basketball, there are unique characteristics that make someone a great armwrestler (as Devon says the big four are cupping, rising, pronation, supination) and to be the strongest you can possibly be you need to isolate those strengths as much as possible to make the greatest gains.

I've heard of some of the things you are talking about in people who have injuries. A lot of it comes from a sort of muscle memory that is shared. To the point where after injury the weak arm can catch up not just lag behind. So in your case ignoring the left arm had the same effect I bet. I think there is a lot of potential in the idea of retraining the left in just practice to keep it fresh and ready to grow. Keep us up to date on how the pumpkin is going. I love hearing about this method.
@mmhm0073 жыл бұрын
My theory: The metabolic processes generated by training any muscle so hard benefits the rest of the body tremendously. If you were to lower your overall frequency and intensity on the pumpkin arm, I don't believe the lesser used arm would bounce back as quickly. Training the same body part hard 3 times a day (even if it is bad due to over use and potential damage), creates a high demand for the metabolic processes needed for sustaining gains and also growth potential. Therefore, the regular intense training anywhere in the body creates the massive availability of the building blocks necessary for relatively good sustained strength/size and also the rapid increases in performance of a short period.

It's that signal of "my strength isn't enough, I need more" that makes muscles grow, which can only be attained through overload. But to maintain or recover recently lost strength it's enough for the muscle to be stimulated so it doesn't atrophy, and that doesn't take much work. This is probably what you're seeing. Your left can keep up on weekly practice, but it won't grow. Your right is growing, but of course it feels way more sore due to being constantly overloaded. Still, if you didn't do that then you'd never see any improvement beyond where you are right now. The body will only give you as much as you demand from it.

Devon, it's so interesting. That all reminds me of Jay Cutler, who is on of the most unscarred multiple Mr Olympia winners of all time, the only with a comeback, and in combination with being a true mass monster. Like so often in life, you get the really important secrets by chance, on a side. He once described in one of his many YT videos, that he didn't have a real plan for work out sessions. Living in Vegas, he could go train whenever he liked, even at 2am. So he trained only whenever he was rested. And in another video, he said something which I can't really believe until this day. He said he never really "trained-to-failure" with an exercise. So it seems to be that the resting phases are the most important ones. How that translates into a endurance sport like armwrestling... IDK. Big fan. regards

Hey devon your awesome!! So what u need to do, to prove your theory correct,,,, go today and do ur max lifts for your left, “(your arm wrestling lifts) write down the numbers of each lift and than dont train again and only arm wrestle with your left, after a month or so, go back and see what your max lift is again for your left, if it went up, it means your theory is correct. While your doing that, write ur max lift for your right, and continue training and arm wrestling with the right, and after a month do your max again, and see how much it went up Than compare the numbers see which arm got the most strength Hope you read and understand, also the mind/visualization is the biggest factor to beating monster todd,, visualization of beating him over and over, and also know and believe without a doubt you will win, Visualize in first person as if its happening, holding your hammer after a great victory, feel the emotions! Law of attraction, law of belief, its real devon! You will win if you believe and see that without a doubt

Without going into a bunch of theories about this, in your case specifically you have already perfected all the muscle groups in your sport and this is what would benefit you the most in my opinion. - 1 day a week of light training high reps - 1 day a week of heavy training low reps - 1 day a week of arm wrestling up (with multiple partners) until 7-10 days from the match. (maybe some light dumbbell curls in the week before the match to help with blood flow and mobility.) As I mentioned this is very specific to what I believe Devon should be doing and only for upcoming matches, this is not at all what I think overall training should look like and there are probably thousands of different ways to train each having their own benefits. All that being said whatever you decide to do for training I wish you the best of luck in your match against Michael Todd.
@ryhabwhit62533 жыл бұрын
I feel like Todds gonna train his ass off cause hes scared, and Larratt already knows hes strong enough and will go into this match in May with a, "you're going to have to break my arm to beat me" attitude. I'm pretty sure Todd is done.
@AllThingsFascinate3 жыл бұрын
Idk man. I think full body, biggest muscle group training is the route to more mass and power, which Devon needs. Plus the blood clot, etc. I think Mike will have too much horsepower

DON'T STOP TRAINING DEVON! The tell will be when you stop training your right (give it rest) before the match with Michael. It'll feel like your left does now but with the POWER of the GIANT PUMPKIN behind it. Rootin for ya my man!

I have always had this same theory about just doing things is far better than working out. I have always compared "farm strenth" to "gym strength", I have noticed a long time ago that the big jacked guys at the gym tend to not be as strong as they look. I always heard the terms farm strength and old man strength and how those people are so soooo strong. For example I have always believed if you work a desk job or in an office all day and then go to the gym for an hour or two then go home and sit on the couch, you will tend to have a decent strength base and you will most likely look fit and healthy. On the other hand if you work construction or some sort of job that you are always working hard and doing physical labour, I would put money that you do not have the same muscle definition but most likely are just as healthy and quite strong compared to how strong you look. I do think they are both beneficial but I do firmly believe living it day-in and day-out is best for overall raw power
@psychedeli_2 жыл бұрын
So true, the difference is, you have much more endured muscle doing things, but just going to the gym is more for aesthetics and looks

Isn’t that pretty much what Brzenk did most of his life? Seems like I remember him saying he ditched the gym and just arm wrestled which made him better. You might be on to something Devon.
@reezyisback3 жыл бұрын
True . But a close friend to Brzenk . Who makes armwrestling videos . Recently said he believes Brzenk would've been stronger if he didn't leave the gym . Almost the opposite point . Like imagine if he never left . However . He said just his opinion .

Devo - the research on isometric work on injuries, etc., is pretty clear. All the work on the right is helping the left...it's just the way it is. Make sure to taper that right in the final weeks!!!

I know it sux but you should really start a full body routine, especially focused on upper body, limited lower body. I think you'd be happy with the outcome!
@jakegalgon42653 жыл бұрын
As I get older, I've made similar observations in myself, and Covid has really driven the point home. The body has less ability to recover from training and I see diminishing returns to ongoing heavy volume, but I lose strength more slowly and respond better to more intermittent volume. The lessons that I am trying to take from this are to periodize my training much more heavily, including weeks-long periods where I do no strength work at all and to focus more on skills training (since recovery demands are low) and cardio (for work capacity, improved recovery, and health).

I live in a state that has corn feed deer and northern deer that don't get easy meals and get chased by wolves up hills. The deer in the south grow big antlers, bodies mass is much fatter and have tender meat. The deer in the north have much tougher meat, their antlers are smaller but much stronger and dense. I'd rather be the lean and mean when it comes to the table. I just think the body needs 2-3 week breaks to heal. As a person who works a lot of trades every time I start a new trade I'm super sore but I rebound and get the strengths I need pretty damn fast. I would assume your body doesn't want to waste energy keeping those muscles at high density/ high energy demand if not needed. If the path has been built already it's easy to remove the debris.
