I found their advice about crunches and sixpacks weird and confusing. They say it is not about the muscle or doing alot of crunches. But they continue saying crunches do build muscles but you need low bodyfat for it to show it. Well dah, I think like 99% that watch this video knows that you need low body fat to have visable abs. So personally I just get confused when they say so obvious things with the twist of saying weird things like the workout and muscle is not so importent. What are they talking about? Low body fat is ofc importent for you to have a chance to show it, but the workout and muscle is still a most basically, otherwize you will not have anything to show.

Overall I think this video is great for the amount of time spent on each topic but as a fitness professional myself I must add some notes: Myth 2 - It is not so much about mornings or nights that dictates the way our bodies respond as much as our bodies natural rhythm. Some people have been noted to have better performances at different times in their days. The impact is almost not statistically significant but if you are looking to maximize your results you should test to see which time is best for you. Myth 3 - I was surprised to hear what was said here. It has been shown in many different studies that both static and dynamic (exception to balistic) stretching does help reduce the risk of injury before a session of physical activity. Stretching does not leave you with "loose tissue" as was mentioned, our ability to produce a maximal force may be reduced in some circumstances but I'm not sure that's what they were trying to say. I think maybe they were confusing stretching with flexibility training since they mentioned explosive and balistic exercises and in that case they would be right. Flexibility training before a session actually increases the risk of injury. Myth 5 - This one I believe was confusing because of the short time they had to explain it. The typical "cardio exercises" are what would be described as predominantly aerobic exercises. In these types of exercises you should be working below your anaerobic threshold which in simple terms means you should be able to produce enough energy without accumulating significant fatigue. To be able to do this one of the main energetic sources is the oxidation of lipids (aka fat). It is one of the longest processes our body has and it requires oxigen so that's why it is predominant in longer and moderate to low intensity exercises (not exclusively but it would be too long of a comment to explain that). All of this to say that yes, in layman's terms cardio does burn fat but I agree that diet is still the most important factor. Myth 6 - This one was just disengenuous. Obviously this is said when comparing volume, saying that a person with a certain weight with a high fat percentage looks bigger than someone very muscular and lean with the same weight. Myth 9 - While for beginners and even some intermediate individuals bodyweight can be a great option in certain exercises, strenght requires a specific kind of stimulation for its training to be effective. In other words it has a specific range in terms of volume and intensity in which the strenght gains will be optimized and in fact the main effect. A hypothetical individual who can do 100+ squats with bodyweight is simply not going to get any significative gains in terms of strenght to his/her quads using bodyweight exercises because even if we tried to manipulate the exercise to maximize the internal load it just wouldn't be enough. Myth 17 - I understand they aproached this question from the point of view of a casual individual who is looking at exercising as a way to have fun and joy so I don't want to be too harsh here. From a general point of view we can say that yes, you should do whatever kind of activity you enjoy the most. If you enjoy dancing it wouldn't make sense to prescibe a basketball handling drill exercise, if you like swimming it wouldn't make sense to make you do strongman events. However if we're talking about exercise plans and even exercises, from the macro to the micro level there are absolutely bad exercises! As much as you may love power lifting, if you have high blood pressure this activity represents a very high risk to you. If you have a past injury that severely affects the integrity of your joints, bones or ligaments you should probably stay away from combat sports. Even if you have no known counter-indicators there are always correct and incorrect ways to perform most exercises so this is where we have to look at it from a health and wellness point of view and be very careful with the kind of advice we give to people. Anyway probably most people haven't read half of this but I just wanted to contribute myself to this discussion so that everyone can be better educated and achieve their goals. :)

Myth 9 is just lack of knowledge in calisthenics, there are always advanced bodyweight exercises one can do to gain more muscle. If squats are too easy to you, try pistol squats, if they're easy too then try explosive pistol squats. Push-ups are too easy? try planche push-ups or handstand push-ups if you want to focus on shoulders.

Crunches WILL give you a six-pack, but it does not mean it will necessarily give you a visible six-pack. It does not matter how lean you are, you still need to train core muscles and all muscles to make them visible and good-looking.

I did too much cardio for about a year which resulted in me being super weak. I didn't notice it at that time, but I wondered why I wouldn't lose any more weight even though I was in a huge caloric deficit. I didn't count wrong because I measured everything and tracked the exact brands I was eating. What I think happened is that I basically starved myself that much that my body tried to consume my muscles. Thus my body burned even less calories than before. I basically gained weight when I ate around 1600 calories even though I worked out. I was also weak during my workouts so I probably didn't burn nearly as much as my tracker said. What ended up happening is that I gained all the weight back, but am left with almost no strength. My TDEE is probably still quite low due to having low muscle mass.
@chrisrohe6459 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you put your self in to a diabetic state you didn't do to much cardio you didn't eat right. You want to stay strong and loose fat you have to consume the necessary calories to sustain your energy and the correct amount of protine to sustain your muscle. You should never do a deficit of calories when you are on a heavy training program. You need to work the body through its zones of energy burning the correct way ad well never exceeding the fat burning zone during cadio and getting in to the protine burning zone. You're also better off doing cardio 2 times a day for 30 to 45 min than one time for 60 to 90 min. Go luck in the future.

@kcx47 Жыл бұрын
I'll tell you why you didn't lose weight and was weaker. It was because you didn't eat enough thinking that cardio was actually going to make you lose weight. You didn't eat enough just like you said and kept doing cardio thinking that's how it worked. Did you know that you have to run 2 football fields to burn one M&M, so no that's not how you lose weight, but if you don't eat enough you're body has to rely on breaking down muscle, which slows down the amount of calories you keep having to burn on a consistent bases. It doesn't make any sense that you could say you gained the weight back, yeah, maybe in fat, because if you were somehow just kind of magical muscle God that could just lose all of his muscle by running and then just by stopping it simply grows right back again, wtf do you need cardio for then man, if that's true, you should be hovered off to the misunion museum right now because then people could study you. All of that, what means by what you said, means that you've never actually been huge into working out before, like I can say that about people twice my size that keep saying all you need to gain 30lbs is just 3x 1 hour times a week at the gym, bullshit, and saying that you lost strength, I wouldn't say that I think you're wrong, I just don't believe you, let me tell you a little about myself, I weigh 115lbs right now, I have since high school when I stopped working out, but I worked out all my live, even at 7 I had my grandma count how many pull ups I could do at 7pm every night, I worked out with weightsat a weightroom for 5 years, however I never stopped working out I spent the rest of day swinging a 10lb pole outside or working out for 8 hours straight, I wasn't even in athletics like my classmates anymore and I still had more exercise than any of them, at 115lbs I could curl 75lbs in one hand, I could squeeze my pecks together with a force greater than 285lbs, and I could deadlift 265lbs at 18 years old, everyone looked at me like I was skinny as a twig but I had more muscle and strength than all of them. How muscle is going to grow depends on how weak you are, like you're not strong because you have big muscles and you're not muscular because you're strong, how muscle grows is how your body adapts to the breakdown of muscle, if you a super weak, you grow bigger muscles, other people can grow bigger muscles than me, but that didn't make them stronger than me, that's why I was so strong with smaller muscles, I had a lot of muscle not just big muscles, if someone like me could handle all that, you should have been able to handle either at least growing more muscle or gaining strength with what you had doing what you did, unless what you're telling me is that you must have really done that to yourself, which isn't the worst thing to happen, cardio packs numerous mitochondria into muscle, but weight lifting makes them bigger, but what you also need beside them being bigger is more of them so they can supply the energy to grow even more muscle and to make sure what you're talking about doesn't really happen to you.

To actually give some insights on morning versus evening exercise (new research emerged these past years on the subject): Training on the morning or evening yileds not much of a difference, but what greatly differs are how or body responds to it. As we wake up we have a lot of stress (some you feel, some you don't) in our bodies, which also sends the body in high alert state. This means that even if body is waking up, it has a rather high metabolism. On the evening however, this has slowed down drastically. Exercising on the evening helps the body regulate the blood pressure a lot better, which has obvious health benefit (both mentally and physically). The research suggests that in terms of fat burning you won't see much of a difference by the training itself, but over time those that exercise on the evening lose more weight. While not everything is clear yet, it is to believe that the better managed blood pressure (and its side effects) has a key part.

At one point I was thinking that I was going to be fat for the rest of my life until I started eating properly. Good diet is a key. Obviously I had no clue what to eat and how much. I had to invest in meal plan from Next Level Diet. It wasn't so expensive and it helped me start losing some fat and guided me to eat properly. Now I am thinking about getting personal fitness coach to help me learn how to plan and do exercises properly.

After almost one year (June 2019) I've lost about 70 pounds after years of eating bad things. I changed what I was doing and have mainly just walked. Now don't get me wrong, I also do other things like lift weights, cardio (while I walk/jog), push ups, sit ups, etal but all in all it was the changes I made. I like what was said close to the end of this. Start slow, don't expect change in a month, find what you like and just keep doing it and take time to rest. What I did was find something that was a bad habit and change that with doing something that was instead a good thing for myself, I lost the bad habit and now look forward to my early morning 5 mile walks. I do rest once a week but I think that is going to change after June. I think I may change it up every other day. One day, exercise the next day my cardio walk/jog. I started at 252 and am now down to 184 as of this morning. Yes I'm amazed at what I've done because, honestly I didn't think I could. I'll be turning 65 in July. I also went from a 42 inch waist to now a 34. I feel GREAT!

Well it's 18 months later and I am still on this. One thing I forgot to mention was that I started a month before my 65th birthday. I have the early onset of arthritis in my right knee (according to the xrays my doctor read) and a stabbing pain (just started about 8 months ago) in my left knee. I'm down to about 180ish (I'm not weighing myself 3 times a day any more)and am building muscle, yes I can go to the pool without my XXL t-shirt trying to conceal the huge belly that used to proceed me in the past. It's more defined and a lot of the love handles are gone. But please to everyone getting started here for the young and the old. The first myth is that you can go from a size 42inch waist to a 34 inch waist and have huge bulging muscles in 30 days. If you believe this and try it you will be disappointed and quit. The process is long and arduous and each day seems like the hill will never have a top and that's because you set goals. Not crazy ones but attainable ones. The thing that kills me is when I go on a cruise, the first thing I do is go to the gym and try to figure out what my new regiment is going to be. I see guys in there who have the physic I used to have when I first got started. What are they doing? Trying to lift huge weights and I can see from their struggles and the fact that they can only do 3 reps of one set using 45lb weights that they are going to rip their muscles to shreds. Always work up, your body has muscle memory so get used to a weight you can manage, do 3 sets of 10 for a while then increase that to 15. Once you get used to that weight increase the weight. But don't pretend that you can walk into a gym and lift more than you should. It is not going to end up good for you. The point is take things in moderation so that you don't quit. That helps being consistent. And consistency is key. And always remember 80% is diet and 20% is exercise. And thanks for all the encouragement. But there is nothing more encouraging than to hear it from someone else. When an old friend sees me and notices the difference it's awesome. The last cruise I finished my workout and started to leave the gym. I guess this older man was watching me and commented that I looked like an 18 year old doing the workout. Yes that make me want to get up the next morning and do even more.

A statement I always hear is that "You can't workout only one side of your body". As in "You can't workout one arm and expect it to get bigger than the other" I can't logically wrap my head around this. Logic dictates if you work out one arm, that arm will definitely get bigger/stronger than the other side.

I think that this myth specifically refers to "spot reducing" for body fat, where people do crunches and planks to remove body fat around the belly which is not how it works. You can't spot reduce fats by doing exercises that target specific body parts since body fats are reduced as a whole.

My workout has stayed the same since my days in the Army as a Grunt ( almost 15 years ago) We started with about 10 minutes of warming up and stretching. We then followed that with a 3-5 mile run at a no slower than 7:30 per mile. Usually the bulk of us were hitting 7's. After we would walk off for about 3-5 minutes, catching our breath hands behind your head back straight chest out. After the 5 or 3 if you were being macho, we would hit the floor and crack out as many pushups as we could in 2 minutes. Most of us were hitting 60, some guys were hitting 70+. Then immediately sit-ups, 2 minutes, as much as you can perfect form and posture. 75+ was generally the minimum. After, breath for 45 seconds, then pullups, full dead hang. Most Grunts were hitting 15-20. After, end it with squats, 2 minutes, as much as you can, about 80 was the norm. If your ass weighed under 200lbs you got weighted (meaning we threw a ruck on you) That setup mixed with a balanced diet has kept my body rock hard, even now in my mid 40's. My times and numbers aren't as high as they use to be, but it's still my staple and one I recommend.
