Got to say with these thing I just take it to the garage and let them struggle with them. You can only get so far with a can of plusgas and a lump hammer.

I reported the comment that gets dropped into a lot of vids and takes unsuspecting people to a sexually explicit site. It gets deleted but I think it comes back unless more people report it. Anyway thanks for your expert advice as always. 👍🏻🦘😷🦘

How do you remember what all your special tools do and where to find them? You have shown dozens of them over the years. Fascinating.

I bought the fulcrum with built in ball joint from Lemforder (DA1129), it´s from Britpart. I have no press, so it was easyer.

I know this question isn't related to this video but I couldn't see any videos about the subject.... how many kilometres do you do before you change the timing belt. I was told about 70k but I want your opinion

Hey mike! I have to do the aframe balljoint when i get back home next week, i ordered one with bracket and screws from gwyn lewis.. however i saw that a lot of people struggle to get the old one out because the two upper screws are seized up.... We are planing to go on a trip the following day so i am a bit scared that i cant make it in time... Can this thing potentially come out completely? I was thinking about ordering the upper a frame bolts too do you think that should do the trick?
@BritannicaRestorations Жыл бұрын
I am assuming you mean you cannot get these bolts out? www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-axles-suspension/rear-suspension/top-link,-fulcrum-ball-joint_52634#17 Or these? www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-axles-suspension/rear-suspension/top-link,-fulcrum-ball-joint_52634#14 When I do them I remove the whole assembly by snapping or burning out the 6 x 10mm bolts that hold this bracket on www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-axles-suspension/rear-suspension/top-link,-fulcrum-ball-joint_52634#5 Then with the fulcrum nut off - you can do this on the bench But I am nut sure which screws you mean

1st time I did one I was committed... By that I mean once i started I had to finish as I needed to be able to get to get back home and to work the following week. All I had was a vice, blow torch (butane not mapp) a scaff tube and a 4lb lump hammer. I cut the scaff tube down to 5" to use as a drift, I managed to move the ball joint out by about 1.5 mm over a period of 3hrs, hit the top of my head at one point on my back swing (stopped for a cup of tea at that point) and managed to reduce the 5" scaff tube to 3" !!!! Realising the dilemma I was in my Dad (who I was visiting, using the drive) took me to his work on the Sunday as there was a press in the workshop, 18.7 ton it took, hell of a bang!! I still think I could have got it out my way but would have needed a lot more gas, scaff bar, time and a hard hat! Have my own press now :)

You really need a press to do these joint and bushes on Defenders

Just done this job last week on my 110.... the upper arm bushes were shot as well; made a helluva difference to the drive... hardly any clunking now at all (which I thought was transferbox).... well chuffed!

I've got a terrible creaking sound under the front passenger floor well. It's mostly when going over bumps and so on. Could the A frame fulcrum joint be the culprit? To be honest I don't even know exactly what that is.

The fulcrum in the video, is on top of the rear axle

Mike. Does it help to heat the fulcrum bracket with a gas torch to 'pop' it in ? Tend to buy the high articulation Britpart part number & swap out the original ! V.
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
You could heat it up but makes it tricky to handle

I did this to mine last year. Getting the old one out was a nightmare, my 4-ton press did nothing at all. I resorted to cutting a slot across the back of the old part in my mini-mill to relieve the stress before it finally yielded. Then I had the fun of fitting the new one at 6:00AM in November in the rain because the MOT was booked at 9:00.

AND you usually find the joint has gone after it has been rustproofed...

It's very hard to break the habit of a life time Mike. I just get the burning tackle out and heat it up. That's a good tip on using long studs to line the holes up, I could have done with knowing that a few times for sure. Great video, many thanks, Yorkshire Rob..

To get the old ball joint out, large socket over the top, fit two longer bolts in the holes with plenty of thread engagement, fit into my large engineers workshop 6" vice, put on the squeeze, push old one out. To fit new ball assy, another large socket the other end, with bolts in to guide, into vice, large 1/4" thick washer on top to accommodate "dome" top of ball, push in, do up bolts. I don't do enough of them to make special tools. I really like all your "special" tools Mike, if I was doing more I'd be right into that...
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
Last week it took 20 tons to press one out - you must have a bloody good vice! Lol!
@gazzafloss3 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations oh I have a number of vices, but a especially strong "engineer's vice", I've done four "A" frame ball joints in it over the years, none were what I'd say was super hard, no salt encrusted rusted bits.

@mjallenuk3 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations Absolutely... I've never had one shift and it's literally only a slip. Most of which gets moved out the way as the press sends it home. Anything that 'falls out' of the fulcrum makes me suspicious that it's had it's day at the lot gets replaced. Love your stud idea. That's something I'm going to try in future. Always done it by eye and been lucky but this would insure a perfect job. Nice one fella.
