Fitting Ape hanger handlebars to a Suzuki VS1400 Intruder Part 1

I am about to try and remove the flat bars glf style off a 1993 Vs 1400 and change the risers for original gl ones and put original gl bars on as I hate flate bars myself, so hopefully will be able to run the wires back through the bars again looks like the cables are / maybe long enough as they aren't really high bars but won't know for short till I do it , all the braided hoses have a lot of extra so no problems with them and throttle cable is fairly long also , but I just wanted to say a big thanks bud as this video has and will be a big help to me and gives me some idea of what the job involves beforehand so cheers for that ...All the best

Silly question so I apologize in advance but this looks like a nightmare of a job , couldn't I just cut them at the bottom in-between the light and risers and then neatly rejoin them and rebind wouldn't that work as I may have to extend anyway so could it be done from there with a join ...?? Of course you could cut the wires and re-join them, but it's really not that difficult to remove the wires from the bars. There's very little clear loom between the bottom of the risers and headlamp, I think you'll have a nightmare to join, solder, and shrink wrap the cables when there's so little to work with.

Another question if I may please I have the glf obviously with the flat bars fitted , I also have a gl top yoke with the bull backs and as I don't like flat bars I'm wanting to change them over my question is the yokes themselves look identical and both have excellent chrome so I'm wondering is it possible for me to take the all in one flat bars off and just replace the risers onto that yoke as they look identical without replacing the hole yoke over just change the risers over for the bull backs, do you know if they are both compatible with each other riser fitting wise ...?? The yokes are dimensionally identical across all 1400 models, there is a difference with the riser mounts, some have encapsulated rubber bushes with large (20mm ish) threads and nuts. Earlier models had 12mm bolts and top hat rubbers top and bottom. You can't swap these risers from one top yoke to the other but as long as you have the correct risers for the top yoke you have fitted, the distance between the bolts is the same. If you're in the UK, I have both sets of risers second hand.

@@rhinotrikes Hi bud many thanks again for your reply it is much appreciated, I just checked and both yokes have the large bolts and nuts and are identical in size and appearance the bike with the flat bars is a 1993 , and the yokes with the risers are off a 1991 model , both look identical except obviously for the risers but as I say the bolts and nuts are exactly the same type and size on the bottom , so going from what you are saying I take it they should be compatible then and I should be able to change the risers over if I'm reading what you said correctly I assume...?

@@karl53133 That's correct. I'm assuming that your bars are of the Boulevard type T bars which have no risers as they bolt straight into the top yoke. As long as your replacement risers are the same size bolts as fitted to the boulevard bars, they will fit. The alternative yokes are completely different and have top hat bushes (1/2 bushes) and a 12mm bolt, the two sets aren't compatible. The ones that don't fit have a slot in the bottom of the bars, where the wires come out. If your wires go through the risers and both models do the same you will be good to go. There are only the two types accross the whole range. From memory, I thought the Boulevard bars had the wires external and not through the risers.

@@rhinotrikes Cheers bud yes they both have the identical size and appearance bolt / treads of 20mm or so and nuts on both the bottoms of the yokes both have the holes and wires going through the bars and the risers so think I should be good to go , should get chance latter next week to change over. Thanks so much for all your advice and help as I have had around 17 bikes over the years but never a intruder or a v twin for that matter and have now lost contact with the people that would have known over the years or they are dead now ...!! Thanks for the video! Just what I needed. Bought a 98 intruder and I intend to switch the handlebar to a bit more wider, cruiser style. I have the original bars with concealed wires, with proper holes so hopefully they will pull out more smoothly. I also thought I would have to get underneath the tank to remove the wire connectors but seems like they are connected behind the headlamp! Convenient.

Yes a 98 should have wiring in the headlamp plenty of fairy liquid on the cables to help them pull through.

If the model you have is a Boulevard (S83) then your wires will be under the tank, otherwise, the wiring is in the headlamp.

If you watch the whole series you'll see that I make them all myself. I could make you a set but you'd have to supply your old ones and tell me how much longer they need to be
