This kicks the shit out of the Tommy's Trade Secrets guide I just watched. Also gutted I bought torus architrave. That victorian stuff looks amazing.

Genius, I’ll be doing this as I put some architrave that has the same problem. Thanks for the tip!

Nice job, another option is to rebate the back of the architrave where it sits high on the plaster. You can do this using a table saw or planer depending whats available. Good videos!

Thanks. Had thought of running them through the table saw however couldn't face being up and down to the workshop every cut. Definitely the best option if not painting though.

You may have mentioned it but I didn’t hear it, the 3-5 mm gap (I think you used 4 mm) is called the “Quirk”. That little gap between the edge of the jamb and the edge of the arch.

Hi. Thanks for the video my architrave is sorted. Question about the door. I had to it on the door side. The strip made the casing 4mm deeper and doors come as a standard 35mm. For the stop to work properly and the hinge. Do I need to make the same trick on the inside stop also to bring it forward? Thanks

What is the procedure when left and right verticals are not the same? As it will affect the mitre being less/more than 45 degrees? I don't have a chop saw only basic hand tools and a mitre box and would prefer to use as little deco-caulking as possible. Many thanks.

Bit late but an angle finder is your best bet. Then just half whatever angle you get.

What did you use to remove the excess plaster over the edges before fitting the stripwood? I need to do this myself and thinking multitool but not sure what attachment would be best.

Excellent job. Once you get the cardboard sheet off the doors and painted the hallway and landing areas will look amazing

LOL. Yep that is something I found, while burning off the paint and varnish on a wooden mantle piece - right the way back to 1893 when the house was built ;)

Nice vid. That molding would look great in my 1911 house here in Wash. state!! BTW, can you name the songs for me? Those guys have HUGE music lists and I just can't find what you played for us. Keep up the great work, Dave

are you keeping the original architraves where they still exist? I have similar in my house from 1910 and they look awful with all the layers of paint, dents, lumps and bumps. Wish I'd replaced them all. My door linings dont look great either, yours dont look too bad but I guess linings are easier to plane and sand down than architrave.

We have a few original architraves on the inside of the rooms with we have kept and repainted. I actually really like the look of years of paint on woodwork but made sure we rubbed down any bumps. (Being careful with lead paint) You could strip them back first but may end up being more hassle than it's worth.

+The Restoration Couple the architraves in my house look a little more ornate / complex than yours so i couldn't bare the thought of sanding them or stripping them down. If i were staying here some years I'd replace them with similar mouldings to freshen up the look. I know the knocks add character but I'm a perfectionist! your videos have given me some inspiration though and its nice to see buildings being brought back to their former glory having been "abused" in the past!

+Steve Craft If you really want to clean it up and it's more ornate then you could always carefully pull them off and have them dipped. If a whole door costs less than £10 to professionally strip it may be worth it and much cheaper than replacing. Just mark them up so you know where they go afterwards.

+James Hazelip Its a Tacwise, plug in 240v nailer. Can't remember the model off the top of my head but 'master nailer' rings a bell. I got it years ago and it does the job ok however I do intend to switch to air tools soon as I use it a fair bit and it would be good to one it for external work.

Not quite 5mm. This moulding has a beaded edge so I matched the original which are only set back by about 3.

Hi mate great videos as always. Were also redoing out whole house and I wanted to get your thoughts on using plywood for internal doors? Were thinking of getting high doors (726 x 2440 x 44) but they seem to be very expensive to buy and only a limited number of companies sell that size. Builders Depot are selling plywood doors at that size (www.builderdepot.co.uk/1220mm-x-2440mm-x-45mm-1-2-hour-door-blank.html) but wasn't sure if plywood is a good choice for doors and whether it would keep the sound in the rooms. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
