These are some simple shelves for storage that are going to get painted, I first cut a rebate on some 70mm x 32mm timber with the table saw for the front rail that will help to stop these 1metre wide shelves bending/sagging, I fixed 45mm x 20mm timber to the wall with 70mm x 5g ScrewTite screws & 6mm red plugs. i drilled the wall with a Bosch 18v SDS drill with a 6mm masonry bit, I cut the shelves roughly to size with a Makita 36v cordless track plunge saw, then scribed them to fit the wall with a compass, the front timber with the rebate in was glued with Everbuild 30MIN PU7 glue & pinned using a FN001GD201 40V MAX XGT 18g Brushless Brad Nailer, then sanded with a Makita 18v orbital disk sander,
I don't make these videos to make money or out of vanity, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time, so if you have gained/learnt anything from any of my videos & would like to thank me or help me out you can show your appreciation by donating & pls clicking the PayPal link below, it has a card details option if you don't have a PayPal account, every little helps & will be much appreciated. This channel is amazing. I can’t believe it’s taken the YT algorithm so long to recommend it to me. You are the king of scribing and your method of scribing the shelves and window boards etc. side to side is just the best and simplest way. Loving the no nonsense approach to everything and the tips are absolutely gold compared to the same old generic stuff on other channels.

Thanks Steve, much appreciated👍 I was trained at a firm who had a decent workshop, we also went on site to do general joiner & fit the things we made, I was made redundant & for many yrs i was an on site joiner initially working through the agencies doing alsorts of joinery jobs working with many different people, then i got in with half a dozen good firms, on site sometimes i'd be classed as a 'Fitter' 👍 I film my work with my phone because it's always in my pocket, I don't have a fancy camera & microphone, i do use a tripod but my work gets priority over filming, I try to share as much as i can & share my thoughts as to the reasons for the decisions i make, so that's good to hear you like that, I film my work & share rather than do jobs to make YT vids, if that makes sense, so sometimes there's gaps between my uploads when jobs don't get filmed because either i just can't, the job needs doing & i haven't time to film or simply the job gets done before the camera comes out. & i've got a powerful PC & plenty of expensive editing software but i like to keep my videos simple, no pointless intro, no fancy graphics, I don't stand in front of the camera talking about 'stuff', there's no promotion crap & i try to keep any irrelevant bull to a minimum, it's eyes on the job start to finish, I think maybe my vids aren't 'entertaining' enough to raise the many subs & views others get, so my vids don't get promoted in the same way but i'll keep filming & uploading as often & as n when i can 👍👍 ,

I didn't think you should hammer drill through tiles in case they crack. I always switch it off until I drill through them. Interesting. Fab video as always. Just a simple thing done to perfection. I can see you acquired some new toys. That Hoover is actually manufactured by Nilfisk. I had one of them for 5 years until it died last month only to be replaced by the same one. Good to see you're in great shape!
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
No you're right it's not a good idea to hammer drill through tiles, I did try to make it clear it wasn't a good idea & i should've mentioned turning off the hammer action, but sometimes if the tiles are hard & the drill if it isn't sharp it just burns the bit, this was prob not the best example but i took a gamble n luckily it was ok. No idea about the Makita vac, i've had it for yrs n it works well when the filters clear, & yeah I've always got new toys, you just haven't seen some of these because i haven't been filming but i've been trying to go completely cordless, since swapping the Makita track saw for a cordless one i've been able to replace the corded tools i didn't want to be Bosch cordless, it's a slippery slope. 😁😂 Bit fat n old but yeah i'm ok thanks, keep well yourself 👍

Tile hardness matters, but so does the adhesive behind the tile. If someone has dot and dabbed it rather than trowelling, leaving a void behind the tile will definitely cause it to crack.

@@Gidjoiner Is that Makita 40V Brad nailer limited to 40mm brads Gid? I'll be getting a couple of 40V tools at some point, the 216mm mitre saw first maybe. A dual bevel head on a cordless mitre saw that isn't too big is a big attraction for me. Anything bigger than 216mm is too big to be lugging in and out of a van every day. I have the same little 190mm Makita 36V as you but when I'm doing stair balustrades it's a bit limited. I'm putting away money for the second half of my w/s build so the shiney stuff will have to wait. Those were beautiful shelves, marvellous craftsmanship as always, 👍 😁 🔨 🇮🇪

Hi, I don't mind the big Dewalt that it's corded, if i'm getting that out running a lead is no big thing, but yeah cordless is the way to go if poss, i didn't have the funds when i bought it & i didn't wat to Have Dewalt to add to my growing list of chargers, The 40v nailer I'm not hugely impressed with it as i wrote somewhere else, i wouldn't say it was crap but it's a little bit crap for Makita, yeah i think 40mm max size of pins, not as much power as you'd like, the nailer action isn't sharp so results in a bit of a kick which then results in less penetration, I like that it's fairly small & got a narrow nose compared to other brands but I'm considering grinding the nose down a bit, you'll see in the cupboard vids i nail the face frames on, 20mm Beech onto ply carcass 40mm pins & the head doesn't always go below the surface, don't think I'd buy it again & i read the bad reviews n hoped they were wrong, they're not, it's fine on softwood 30mm pins like in this vid, 😒 Might buy an Hikoki one as i've batteries for those & they are a positive action, but i don't like the fat nose on those, ... we'll see 👍 There's not a lot of choice on the market tho, big with a fat nose or smaller with a narrow nose like this but not quite enough power 🤷‍♂️ Thanks, glad you like the shelves 😁👍

@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, unfortunately to get text to speech, you need to have a 365 licence, not a perpetual licence. I have Vegas Pro19 Perpetual (how did you know?) but this was edited with Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2022, 3x faster than Vegas for render/export & plays 4k at full res transitions 1st time without having to loop play before getting up to full fps, Does YT subtitles not work?

@@Gidjoiner Oh that's amazing tool. Can they transport that render and playback performance to Vegas? I came here through your signature link!
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
amazing tool? Apparently for Vegas to work as well & render as fast as MEP Premium it would need a total rewrite of the software, MEP got a new Infusion engine a few yrs ago which improved performance drastically, these videos i make are normally roughly 20mns long, Vegas renders them in about 15-18mins-ish, it also crashes quite a lot,, MEP renders them in 5mins & is very stable 😁🤸‍♂️👍 but MEP can't do some of the stuff that Vegas does & most of my Boris plugins don't work in MEP, so i'm stuck using both, I now use Vegas as more of an effects editor & MEP for simple editing, luckily i like to keep my YT vids simple, no fancy pants intro & none of the bull that you get in other's vids, 👍😊
@bca7839
@bca7839 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gidjoiner 👍😊 Do you know when will Magix give Infusion engine toVegas?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
I've no idea & i don't know if it will ever happen, Gary Vegas's production manager commented on the Vegas forum about it needed to be rewritten to replace the engine, Vegas team is small & it seems they're trying to patch old software to keep it up to date whilst adding a few extra gimmicks to make it appear 'modern', I suspect Vegas will slowly fall behind or get a big budget one day n get rewritten, until then we can only wait...

Yeah tel me about it, I've wanted to go totally cordless for ages, I tried sticking to Bosch because the ones i have are quite good & i wanted as few chargers as poss, but some tools i didn't want to replace with Bosch, i wanted Makita like the corded ones i have, so after replacing the track saw with the cordless i've been buying what i can, but this nailer is 40v - another charger 🤦‍♂️ The Hikoki framer is the best i'd tried that wasn't battery + gas. The Milwaukee replaces the Bostitch narrow crown stapler i have, Milwaukee seemed to be the only one i could find, yeah i quite like it, don't like Milwaukee & it's a bit big but it does the job no prob, good positive action 👍 I considered the 18g Hikoki but it has a fat nose, there's not a lot of choice on the market tho for some things, either a big with a fat nose or smaller with a narrow nose like this Makita nailer but not quite enough power 🤷‍♂️

hi gid nice solid shelving does the mafell dust bag fit the track saw or did you make it fit
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Liam 👍 Nope i had to buy an adaptor, the catch for opening n emptying it is on the top so i keep opening the bag by accident & that catch is really poor quality, & because the bag sits with it's arse up when on the saw it fills n blocks the port quite quickly, i have to empty it before half full, Not worth the price,

Yeah they sell here for £45, so for the extra £s the Mafell was a gamble purchase i could afford, unfortunately the regular bags for £20 seem to do better 🤷‍♂️ on this saw anyway 😐

Wondering why you didn't use the track saw for the scribe cuts instead of the jigsaw. Habit?

Yep the sparky's right, i cut the straight cut on the right with the track but the one on the left wasn't straight, i did mention it but i mumble a bit so maybe that wasn't clear 👍

what blade you got in your track saw gid
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, i just changed it from the orig that was too flexy for trimming the edge if things, it was drifting when cutting not much more than the blade width, I buy the Freud blades, the one in the little Dewalt is the same one i put in when i bought it, admittedly it's getting a bit tired but those Freud seem to last a long time 👍👍 you'll see the blade change in track saw in the upcoming alcove cupboard vids 👍 I went with the 40T blade because it has a thicker kerf so hopefully a stiffer blade www.screwfix.com/p/freud-wood-circular-saw-blade-165-x-20mm-40t/975kj

Gid the Makita nailer what’s you’re thoughts on it I have been wanting one for ages now but I am on a few Makita groups on Facebook and they all say they are crap also KZbin video’s
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah not hugely impressed with it, i wouldn't say it was crap but it's nearly crap, not as much power as you'd like, the nailer action isn't sharp so results in a bit of a kick which then results in less penetration, I'm considering grinding the nose down a bit, you'll see in the cupboard vids i nail the face frames on, 20mm Beech onto ply carcass & the head doesn't always go below the surface, wouldn't buy it again & yeah i read the reviews n hoped they were wrong, they're not 😒 Might buy an Hikoki one as i've batteries for those & they are sharp but i don't like the fat nose on those, ... we'll see 👍

@@aaronbell8527 Pneumatic guns are yet to be beaten in my opinion. I run a Senco 15ga finish gun, a Milwaukee 18ga Brad nailer and a Bostitch narrow crown stapler off a DeWalt flexvolt compressor. Gasless and airless technology isn't there yet. That's just my tuppence worth, 🔨 🇮🇪

yeah, the Hikoki nailers have a good positive action, they fire in well but apart from that, the 15g & 16g are big with fat noses & none beat the Bostitch air i have for quality, power, size & weight

@@aaronbell8527 Paslode is baaaad! Everybody hate Paslode because it stinks! Regrettably though, it just works. I've only known Paslode really so can't comment on other brands but if Paslode is what majority use there's probably a reason for it. They're expensive, expensive to run but you can take them apart like firearms, clean and lubricate them and spare parts are readily available. Paslode is a trade off for me but one that I got used to and can deal with its quirks reasonably quickly. It still stinks though!
