This is just work, more like a Vlog, a rental house that I've been working on, minimal money & time to be spent, very badly fitted front door to be turned around, 2 fire doors fitted & a new cheap kitchen,
I don't make these videos to make money, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time so if you have gained anything from any of videos & would like to help me out & donate pls click the PayPal link below, every little helps & will be much appreciated. Thankyou.

Welcome back Gid, Great video, you saved the customer a good wedge of cash re fitting that front door. it initially looked a lost cause, nice save. The taper on the planner was good thinking gluing a strip of sacrificial wood to give the required angle, very neat. i always use hinge tite screws as the ones that sometimes come with door packs a crap.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
🙋‍♂️Hi, I sometimes use the thicknesser but this method is quicker if absolute accuracy isn't necessary , The screws on these fire hinges are normally stainless so a little harder but not with this pack 🤷‍♂️ Thanks Roy, yep it turned out ok in the end 👍

Made my Sunday evening even better and love it's just normal stuff. The door was a right mess but you did a great job with what you had to work with . Did laugh tho when u said using those worktop joiners was a step to far as I do work for a property company and they want things done cheap and quick but I can't lower myself to fit the filth collecters which is what they do collect crap anyway great job and thanks for the vids mate appreciate all your efforts 🖒

Yep, normal stuff, the door worked out ok in the end 👍 n yeah those jointing strips are crap n collect water helping rot the cut end of the top so unless they're willing to replace the worktop each yr... Yep couldn't stoop to that level, Good glad you like them, 😉 Thanks alf 👍

Hi mate,I have to do these type of jobs all the time and the thing I find hardest and most annoying is trying to get the customer to actually pay out money for decent materials
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah it's hard enough doing cheap work but using the cheapest materials as well makes it worse, luckily the kitchen was fairly good & cheaper than the B&Q n IKEA shite & the front door needed little spending on it, This Landlord i work for on their house n get paid ok, some landlords in the past have been dickheads but none of them want to spend money on their properties,

@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick, 👍 I have some of this saved so sorry it's long & for the copy n paste 😉👍 - In my mind i want it to be perfect, but i've learnt there's a balance between getting it done & doing a decent job. I've seen people fannying around on a piece that should've only taken a sort while, those people don't last long & quite often don't do a good job in the end anyway 🤔. At school i did metalwork & tech drawing, I wanted to be an engineer but my Maths let me down in aptitude tests for jobs so i went for a joiners job n haven't looked back, that was 36yrs ago, I did my apprenticeship at a joiners, we did both onsite & workshop/bench hand, all kinds of joinery, making stuff to go to site then going & fitting it, sometimes just working on site, sometimes the opposite just working in the shop, good old fashioned joiners that was well equipped with big Wadkin type machines, after 5yrs i was made redundant, I then worked through the agencies for a couple of yrs n did everything, mainly on site stuff, the good & the bad, after a while i got to know some good firms fitting pubs, shops & offices... they'd sub me in when they needed extra hands, doing that sort of work you have to be able to turn up on site & do anything they ask, joinery related, so it was a steep learning curve at the beginning but it did me good, with the good firms I'd got to know i dropped the agencies n i was able to pick n choose a bit n just do the good stuff, just make a call or 2 if needed & was never out of work, 😊 I think looking back being made redundant was good for me, sometimes working for the same firm people can get institutionalised, only learning one way of doing things n not learning that there may be a better or easier way or even if they're doing it wrong, I got to work with many many different people & a wide variety of jobs 👍👍 Just one for instance was hanging 750 doors on a student housing complex in the mid 1990s, 6 of us hung those over a few wks, I don't have to give much thought about how to hang a door now 😂 I've been working for myself for 20yrs, never advertised & i've always got work 😊 most of my vids are of my work, filmed with my phone because my work always has priority over filming but I try to share as many of the tips n tricks I've learnt over the yrs, the jobs are discussed with the clients reg all different designs & different options of materials but in the end it's their decision/choice & how much they're prepared to spend, I have to get these jobs done within time n budget so things aren't always perfect, i stick to my orig agreed quote providing they don't change anything so it's in my interest to crack on with the job but i don't rush a job n bodge it just to get the job done within time, I'd prefer to take that little longer n do a decent job, occasionally there's vids of me playing with my welder & i was trying to keep my van going for as long as i can, it's my 4th transit & i was sick of throwing them away because of rust, car bodywork, it's just joinery wi metal init 😏 but this one's just died because of rust, again! 😒 it's too far gone for me to fix, I make my vids how i would prefer to see/watch a vid, they don't have a long pointless intro, no bull, i don't stand n front of the camera waffling about unrelated crap, it's eyes on the job pretty much start to finish, i try to fit as many of the steps i take building something into the videos & there's no promotion crap at the end, I also don't mind showing any mistakes or hurdles, getting over them is sometimes key to being able to get a job done & ya also learn from mistakes 👍

Hi gid, can you remember what wood you used for the lipping? I’m working in an older property. The rebates are 35mm so I managed to find a 35mm fire door that is 2’8 by 6’8 however the opening is 2’9 so I will need to as you have done in your Video add 1/2 inch lipping either side. Thanks for your time.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome 👍 Unless i made them It was an off the shelf lipping from /Milford's, Huws Gray they call themselves now, I think these lipping are only about 10mm thick, might be able to get them from other merchants. You could maybe reduce the opening by adding wood & a new stop bead?
@TheMatthew93mt
@TheMatthew93mt 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gidjoiner Thanks for the info. I think time wise adding thicker lipping would be more efficient. My only worry is whether removing the old lipping and replacing it will compromise the fire certification. Maybe I’ll give the fire safety officer a call to be on the safe side.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 жыл бұрын
Fire doors regularly get cut to size & re-lipped so i wouldn't worry about that, you can buy fire door blanks that are unlipped, that's why they sell the lippings, there's so many details that wouldn't pass the test when putting fire doors in an older house, if you check ½hr fire door specs & check the depth of the rebate it'll be nowhere near deep enough in the old frames in that house, the position of firedoors & the direction they open, how close they are to staircases.. every job i do on rented houses putting firedoors in, they go into the old frames, fire/building reg people know it's just impractical to replace the frames, so there's always a bit of compromise, re-lipping doors normally states that the lipping should be hardwood, .. but yeah if it's poss spk to the man ,

i came across metal doors opening outwards on some maisonette type apartments 4 stories blocks, whilst doing the electricity disconnections prior to demolition. they had about six bolts on the inside. the previous occupants were drug dealers. so the police would take for ever to take out the door. wonder if your previous occupants might have been dealers?

Hello gid, what timber did you use to re-edge the lippings on the firedoor? I work for a housing association and this is the kind of work on a daily basis. Nothing spectacular but pays the bills and my tools ;)
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
I think they use Sepele, It's been 20yrs since i worked for a firm but I think the main point is it has to be hardwood, I used what i had which was Beech, If there's to be an inspector check with them.

@SuperTannoy 5 жыл бұрын
Wow you had your work cut out with that one, great job though, Do Fire Doors not need to have a 1" rebate ?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, public & private have different rules & existing structures as in these frames compared to new build have different rules too, the inspectors/rule makers understand that ripping out in some case nice moulded frames just isn't practical so allowances are made, but i did say in the vid that if i need to i did allow for a deeper rebate to be created by fitting a latch with a deeper back step. I don't think it's 1" tho, ½hr fire door casings are only about ½".
@SuperTannoy

Swings n roundabouts on jobs like this, often you're trying to make good with minimal spend yrs of bodging, on this kitchen i could gut it n fit a new one, this front door was a task i felt i needed to rectify but still within a given time n budget, & off course the door had to come off n go back on within the day to make it secure, Yeah it's hard to do cheap work, you try to do it quick but like the worktop joint i could've just bought a metal jointing strip but there's a limit to how low to go. Bit more tape n that plane will last another 25yrs 😂 there's a couple of better ones rusting in the shed i think but i like this one 😉
