Great video Paul. I have become such a fan of yours! I have been wood working for about 35-40 years but have been using power tools and machinery. You might say I am a wood machinist. I have been watching your videos for about a year now and started buying old tools on ebay and other places. Through your videos I have learned how to use them properly and through hours and hours of practice I hope to someday become a master such as yourself. You have become a mentor and a great teacher to me. For that I thank you.

These wheels are the perfect middle-ground. Normally the wheels make the workbench wobbly. I can leave my workbench parked, but I would attach these because you never know when you'll have to move it on your own. I would perhaps add a metal bar connecting the levers so that you can press them both down at the same time which should reduce strain on one of the wheels.

Those casters look like the ones that Rockler and Powetec sell. Both offer a quick disconnect base that will allow you to remove the caster by pulling a retaining pin.. I looked at the PowerTec and Rockler bases and found that they were identical. If they are in the way you might want to consider adding them to the bench...they will be on my bench when I make it

I've used these and they work great. I put mine on the inside of the legs so they'd be out of the way and I could tip the bench if needed. A little more awkward to activate but not a big deal.
@Paul.Sellers

Actually, I think it is a big deal myself. Hard to access and harder to sweep around. I considered all options, worked it out for myself and feel it was a well thought out decision leading to extra length over all which gave better stability, ease of cleaning and total access for raising up.

I made one of Paul's first generation workbenches (double sided) which has turned out to be a very sturdy and useful tool - thank you Paul. I think this castor option is okay for what it is but for my workbench I adapted Carl Holmgren's retractable castor design (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH3SiJJ8oK9lp5Y). I can engage and disengage the castors with minimal effort and I don't need to ensure space to access to the castor levers on each leg of the bench. Also, any swivel castor of sufficient strength can be used instead of buying a task specific design.

Have to agree with Ken on this one. For the few times that you will move your bench wouldn't the fact that the castors were out of the way beat the slight difficulty in operating and the negligible difference in stability? I think that stubbing brooms, toes and materials will tell.

Paul invest in an impact driver to drive in screws and lags. I watched you struggle with the drill catching and twisting your wrist and the drill stopping and I know a driver is stronger and is much smoother. I wasn't sold on it until I used one and the quick release most have make changing between driver bits a breeze. Trust me once you try it you won't ever know how you lived without one.
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry and thanks but no thanks too. I have to say that that's just being silly. It wasn't the real struggle you suggest at all, no hurt wrists just another modern day first-world problem. Remember I was raised in an era when there were only hand wrenches, and screwdrivers had no batteries or electric power. Imagine me buying an impact driver for use once or twice a year. Where is the sense in such a thing?. Your perception of what's a struggle is very different than mine, Gabriel. I mean we were talking a few seconds of extra muscle power here. I see grown men say such things and then go to the gym to develop muscle they never use. It's just not my world. I like strain and strength to be a bit more real. It's my lifestyle.

@@Paul.Sellers - I had to walk 2 miles just to get to the nearest bus stop. I didn't need a car I was happy walking 30 minutes to get to the bus in order to go to work. Trust me I never looked back at buying a car. I wasn't a believer in the impact driver ether. I thought it was a gimmick. Then one day I decided to try. Trust me go on a construction site tomorrow or ask anybody in any trade if they would recommend an impact driver and it should be unanimous. The impact driver is the absolute best innovation in screwing since the Robinson screw like 100 plus years ago.
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, and I don't mean to be rude but I see that you still don't see it. I don't want an impact driver because I don't need it. I don't need it because others have it. If I drove screws like this on a daily basis then yes I would be like industry and would need one, but I am not. It's still a first world issue. It is not good enough for me to buy something I might use three times a year max and I could never advise my audience to spend £100 on a mere whim.
@red58impala
@red58impala 6 жыл бұрын
I bought one some years ago and haven't used it as much as I would have liked. I will say it has been very useful and did save time building shelves I screwed right into the studs. Used it to hang my TV's. Most importantly it worked like a charm when I had a part I could not get off my car with hand tools. The impact took it right apart and was much more convenient than running a bunch or hoses, hooking up the air compressor and digging out the impact gun. For just that one job it was worth the money. For woodworking though I see your point. I have a tool cabinet full of wrenches, ratchets and an air powered impact if absolutely needed. I could have used that to hang my shelves in the garage, but the battery powered one is so much quieter.
@answeris4217
@answeris4217 6 жыл бұрын
Mere whim??? Paul the impact driver is probably the most revolutionary tool to have hit the market in your lifetime. It's a tool that every single tradesman uses on a daily basics. In your last 10 videos you would have used it in 7 of them.
