Well done for having a go. The mistakes mean you are learning. It's easy to throw money at someone and let them do it but where is the satisfaction in that. I'm a vehicle tech and what seems obvious now certainly wasn't when I first started out. Well done.

Great job 👍 something I learned very quickly when I started is a long bar or breaker bar is essential......now these days between a long bar and an angle grinder there is no nut I fear. Great job, give yourself a pat on the back 👏 I remember once I worked on an iveco lorry and to get the wheel nuts off I used a long bar with a 12 ft scaffold pole.....and it only just cracked off 😂

It's quite common for cars to not be level, there is a factory tolerance of upto 10% with some makes, that's why it's important to get someone decent to balance the chassis and do the geometry properly. That alone will make a huge different to handling characteristics of most cars. Rob @ Area will sort you out, worth every penny to get it done.

Hi Lew, I have a question for you. I have gone out and brought one of these cars last week. I have noticed it has a problem it seems to be hitting a hell of a lot of speed bumps and debating on buying a set of these or something similar to actually higher the car up. Would you say it’s a good idea or not?
@FNLEW
@FNLEW 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Unfortunately with the nature of these cars being a sporty hatch, they are slightly lower than the average car anyway. You could do it but you'd be spending a lot of money to potentially ruin the handling of the car by raising it. Other things I'd check is things like is your undertray not fully attached and sagging. Is your metal inspection panel hanging off or damaged (common problem, most people remove it). Other than that mate it's just a case of been more careful than a normal car with bumps.
@SEC0NDTW0N0NE
@SEC0NDTW0N0NE 2 жыл бұрын
@@FNLEW thanks for replying so fast. I have took the tray off so it ain’t scrapping so much but what I am finding very weird is the drivers wheel is closer than the other to the arch. I have took it to a mechanic and he says there is nothing wrong with it but you see it’s closer. Also I have watched quite a few of your videos and the car has had an aftermarket exhaust put on half way down ain’t got a clue what make it is or anything but it is embarrassing loud. I driving it has slow has I can to stop people looking at me. I think I would rather have the original on it.

Just fyi.....when you use an impact gun, the longer the extension bars you use the less torque/power the gun will have because you'll loose a fair bit through the extensions ;)

You should get the extension adjuster part for the top of the shocks, so you can adjust the ride quality without having to strip the scuttle panel down when you want to change. Think they're about £30-£40 off memory.
@mickl8212
@mickl8212 3 жыл бұрын
The damping? You don't have to take the scuttle panel off, just pop the damper top nut access cover open, adjust the knurled adjuster, pop the access cover back on and down.

I have seen those, that's a very good point. If I tracked it more then I definitely would.

@@mickl8212 you have to take the wiper off then take the top trim off every time you need to access it on this model of car.
@mickl8212
@mickl8212 3 жыл бұрын
@@FNLEW you certainly don't mate, there's a little access cover on both sides of the scuttle panel. I've had my MeisterR coilovers off enough times to know (due to the faults mentioned to you in a previous comment). Damping can be adjusted in a couple of minutes that way. If you want to adjust the camber on he top of the strut assembly you'll need to remove the scuttle panel as the M6 capheads are harder to access and undo/tighten.
@mickl8212
@mickl8212 3 жыл бұрын
@@FNLEW have a look here mate. It describes removing the full scuttle, then a bit later on, shows the access panels above each strut top bearings. I never removed the scuttle in all the times I had to adjust the damping on my MeisterR coilovers. www.civinfo.com/threads/strut-top-mount-access.38712/

If I could give advice it would be give it a go, but to start small and work your way up. Build confidence and knowledge slowly. Get appropriate tools, sockets ect - including a long/breaker bar! But yea start small build confidence you will be surprised how far you can take yourself. You gotta go outside your comfort zone to learn, but know your limits and only a little at a time.
