anyone who wants to try water propagation should know this; Fittonia is one of the best plants to learn with because you dont need root nodes to get roots, any submerged leaf node/bottom of the stem will sprout roots, so you can submerge 2 nodes (if you have a longer cutting) to get a more established root system. also change the water as much as you can remember, ideally it's every day but it doesnt matter too much, the oxygen from new water can help with rooting and you can get them in a pot sooner! as a general rule for water propogation of other plants, as Steven demonstrated 'cut below the node' for most, it's a root node, for this, it's the leaf node

I tried clipping the stem the other day and tried to go hydro.... It died.. tried again but this time took some of the root out with it just for luck and clipped some leaves to save energy. About 5 days later now looking like it's coming back slowly after the shock. BTW made my hydro out of 2 party cups stacked upsidedown on each other with a cotton ball to hold the plant in place in the cut out.
@catchgrowcook
@catchgrowcook 3 жыл бұрын
Strange - did you clip the stem and clip off the bottom leaves so new roots can grow from the leaf nodes? Fittonia propagation in water worked really good for me. I think the cotton ball might have been an issue since the roots need to absorb both water and oxygen from water. The cotton ball is just going to keep the stems/roots wet with no oxygen flow which will suffocate the plant.

Hi there, your fittonia is stunning. 😍 I have a question regarding the watering routine for the soil propagation. Did you just mist the soil or water it fully?
@catchgrowcook
@catchgrowcook 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nur Hanisah Hadi - For the soil propagation I watered it fully the first time so water poured out of the bottom of the tiny pot. My room is very cool so the soil did not dry out. If I had to water the soil again you can either gently soak in water or mist thoroughly. Either option should be fine :-)

@@catchgrowcook oh okay i get it. And one more, we shouldn't let the soil dry, right? I mean it must be moist all the time. Is it correct?
@catchgrowcook
@catchgrowcook 3 жыл бұрын
@@nisahadi3709 Yes that's correct. The soil must remain moist (not completely wet) so that way the trimmings can grow new roots. Feel free to ask as more questions. I love hearing others propagate their fittonia plants too :-)

Hi from UAE Is it neccessary to keep inside a plastic bag for humidity if we are planting in soil..here the indoor temperature would be around 26 degree celsius and the plants are being kept under indirect sunlight

It helps to keep the plants inside a plastic bag for humidity but it is not necessary as long as the soil is kept moist and the air is humid

You want to make sure the soil is moist so the roots can easily grow from the cuttings. However, you shouldn't have to water your soil very often if the humidity is high

I've been looking for an explanation on why I've lost all of the big bottom leaves in my nerve plant. I have had this plant for 2 1/2 years and all of the big beautiful leaves inside the pot at bottom (soil level) turned brown and dropped off. Its become leggy and long. And continues to lose leaves round the edge of pot....I dont want to lose this plant. Asked a person at plant place and cuz I couldn't say what kind of plant it was(I didnt have a pic and it was a gift) for sure, they mentioned cutting the plant that it had gotten too long and it was stressed... not sure what to do to keep it from losing more leaves.... start cutting, like you showed above? Add fertilizer (never done that)? Because I've lost so many leaves, how far down should I cut? Thanks for your help.
@catchgrowcook
@catchgrowcook 2 жыл бұрын
Yes pruning the plant will help the existing stems get healthier. When the plant gets really long and leggy the leaves near the base tend to fall off. You can also try fertilizing, repotting, and moving the plant to another location.

@@tinayount6281 fittonias do prefer more humid environments so whether you mist the plant or use a humidifier, that will help the plant. I'd try pruning the plant first to get the plant to your desired height and put the cuttings in water or damp soil. You'll figure it out once you try a few different things to see what works. I'm still learning how to take care of my plants too so you're all good! 👍

The fittonia that I have been working with looks much different than your plant.My plants look like a dwarf version of the plant that you have. I have had mine for years and grown them in different environments but they never grow taller than about 4 inches and the leaves stay small and brightly colored.The leaves grow profusely and stay close together.I like to use fittonia in terrariums and the plants I propagate work well because of the size.

If you are propagating indoors then the temperature should be fine. Typically Fittonia needs 65-80 Fahrenheit to survive so 18-27 Celsius. Try placing a cutting in a cup of water to see if that works better with your warmer temperature

If the Fittonia leaves are falling off then that means the plant is stressed. Common reasons for stress are underwatering, not enough light or too much direct sunlight, and low humidity. Where is your Fittonia growing?

I'm assuming Frankie means Fittonia and I love that nickname! When transplanting a Fittonia from soil to water will stress the plant so it will wilt. Are you placing your Frankie in a hydroponic system?

The more leaves in the stem will make the process of root growth slower :-)) at least u know that now. The reason why is cuz all the leaves are trying to get all that energy and nutrients at the same time, its like having one slice of pizza then distributing it lol whereas if there is one or two leaves in a stem cutting, the more likely it is to grow roots faster~!
