Is there a real market for independent drone operators that want to start their own drone services business? Or are companies hiring their own in-house operators?
@DroneNerds Жыл бұрын
Both! The demand will vary with your location, but with proper research and marketing, starting your own drone business can be very rewarding.

People should understand that delivery will not be an option because the pilot-in-command must keep the drone in his/her line of vision. Because we have regulations, I think automated deliveries will remain on the ground

Have you heard of BVLOS waivers? With these waivers, the FAA allows drones to operate remotely and beyond visual line of sight. There is still an RPIC, however they are not in person. We had a great webinar about this featuring ReadyMonitor that does this nationwide.

I personally just started calling business owners directly expressing how passionate I am to work in this field and how I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get started and learning (landed an interview tomorrow with zero experience! If I don't get a job offer I will at least offer to show up for free a few days a week to just shadow and get the experience needed to land a job, like I said whatever it takes!) Just gotta be hungry and put in the work. Having a portfolio is always the most valuable piece of experience you can showcase in any field though.

This video describes drone use cases, NOT viable drone careers. Many companies across all of these use cases have brought drone capabilities in-house, particularly as the cost of drones has declined and state of technology improved. I would love to see a video with someone who identifies the best opportunities for EXTERNAL drone services with guidance of how to build those services in a way that is sustainable. Companies typically go outside to access technology they haven't invested in or expertise they don't have. That means the barriers to entry are either high capital costs and/or significant industry experience. Someone from outside a target industry with no prior knowledge, and no contacts will have to make significant investments to even be in the game. Even then, there will still need to be some level of investment in training to have a shot. Also, I don't see anyone in these "Drone Career" videos talking about the threat to external drone service providers, which is automation. The technology is coming to allow a single pilot to manage clusters or multiple drones, and for drones to perform inspections autonomously without a pilot altogether, making it even easier for companies to bring that in-house. At this point, I don't believe that being a drone pilot is a sustainable, full-time career that is reasonably lucrative unless it is done while employed by a company. I was interested in starting a second career as a drone pilot doing mapping projects for construction, surveying and real estate. However, I now think that the idea is likely out of reach. Any examples out there of folks who have cracked the construction market as an external DSP? If so, how did you do it? What level of tech did it require? Photogrammetry? + LIDAR? + Thermal? + Laser Scanners? - manual/walk around/aerial scanners?

Can't Ai do the inspection jobs now? The repetitive task jobs? What are your thoughts on if Ai will replace these jobs you mentioned?
@DroneNerds Жыл бұрын
Most "automated" drone tasks are still executed by a pilot on-site. A fully autonomous drone mission would typically classify as "BVLOS," or "beyond visual line of sight," because there wouldn't be anyone there to physically observe the drone. Each country has their own rules and regulations regarding BVLOS flights, so the legality of AI-controlled missions will vary.

@@DroneNerds By US LAW a drone operation has to have a licensed pilot maintaining a line of sight. Due to safety and cyber security reasons, the law is going to stay in place for at least half a decade. I'm 17 and got into drones and AI was a big concern for me, but it doesn't exist. Actually AI will help a pilot leverage his expertise, it's kind of like a Burger King shift manager vs someone who just flips Burgers. What's going to raise demand for drone flyers is the scan to 3D model ai technology. Whoever leverages this is practically successful
