Thanks, you answered all my questions and I find the speedlight worked serprisingly well with the soft box considering the strong ambient light.

Thanks for sharing. I've been in tough lighting situations where I had no choice but to shoot in harsh light and wish I had more gear to support.
@ArtNMotionPhotographyАй бұрын
I don't think a speed light should be used during that time, at least a 500W-600 W power strobe is needed to be fast during the photoshoot.

I assisted Monte Zucker back in 1972 - 74 when he was the top PPofA wedding photography teacher and author of the Candid Comments column The Professional Photographer. What we did differently, using the primitive speed lights of the day and color neg. film / prints was always use fill flash which was mounted over the lens as the foundation of the lighting pattern. It was the only way to get detail in both the wedding dress and the black suit of the groom. With the Fill lifting the shadows not as much key light power is needed to expose the highlights and the light will have the same perceptual “softness” because that’s mostly a reaction to how dark the shadows are relative to the highlights. I’m current shooting with a pair of R6mkII - mostly wildlife - and I’m amazed at how much the DR of sensors have improved but dual flash Key over Fill Flash + Sky Fill will have different look aesthetically and technically the ratio of the lighting can be made to exactly match sensor by doing this: 1) Set aperture, 2) raise power of centered fill until detail is seen in black clothing, 3) raise power of key until white clothing is 1/3 under clipping. I carry black and white terry wash cloths I drape over the gray card I use for WB getting the exposure perfect before putting the subject in front of the camera. Back then he did his posed portrait using light from any available north facing window, posing the subject 45° to the widow to highlight the front ‘mask’ of the face and keeping the reflection forward of the face not to the side which over fills it. He really stressed raising the face up to get the light past the brow and into the eye sockets. What is happening in all of these outdoor photos taken on the ground at eye level is that her brow is shading the her eye and as result when the flash is added the highlights it creates on the unshaded parts of face around the eyes - forehead / cheeks - make the eyes look dark and dull by comparison. The solution is simple: have the subject look up 20-30° above the horizon until the brow no longer shade the orbits then also raise camera position so the plane of sensor and face are parallel as at eye level on the ground.

Good video. One thing I do a bit different is I still use my light meter. I got in the habit of using it, and once I set it, I just go with the readings. I usually stay in manual, though a tip I picked up from the Strobist website a long time ago was that if you have a background in the later part of the day, put the camera into aperture priority only, and as the background light keeps dimming, the shutter speed will change so that you can keep a consistent background. Not sure how that would translate for Texas sunlight.

What a gorgeous model and so relaxed she must be a dream to work with. This is a wonderful demonstration of how you get such beautiful images despite the harsh light. There is no doubt the large modifier with diffuser is the best tool for the job here but thanks for showing how much can be achieved with a speed light. Obviously your expertise here is significant but I can dream of taking such beautiful photos. I have the same speed light and you’ve shown me it’s possible so any failure is down to me😂
@isoawe1888Ай бұрын
Thanks. Like the large modifier, though probably would have gone with silver with diffusion. Also, a hard modifier looks good in direct sunlight because it’s what mind expects it to be.

I was scared to use flash photography for years. Now that ive been usings flash it makes a world of a difference. There is a bit of a learning curve but its worth it.

Great video Venessa, very helpful. I would most photographers ate going to have speedlites just because they are cheap, easy to carry, easy to set up. The big modifiers ate good if can leave at the venue for storage, or have assistance, otherwise with wedding guests milling around large flash units on large modifiers is asking for trouble.

Way to keep your composure when your umbrella came crashing down. I've had to replace two 65" umbrellas and a 400w strobe because the wind blew them over and the shafts broke. I even had the c-stands weighted! How did your Profoto fair?

How you make the picture look beautiful with the light source in front of you, especially without using an ND filter ?. Because I tried to apply the same thing, the image appears black.

How is it getting double defussed if the light doesn't shoot through both materials?
@SpotBentleyАй бұрын
Some light will bounce around inside the umbrella before going through the material. To see how much of a difference it makes, you'd have to experiment.

You didn’t seem to give a hoot that the wind blew down your profit o strobe, a $2000 strobe and you could care less. Was it broken?
@LastXwitnessАй бұрын
It’s not that she could care less it’s that she did what a pro does. Not freak out which solves nothing. She can’t do anything to reverse time so she finished her task at hand and got it done worry bout it later even if that later is just 5 mins from now to assess what set back she might have. Nothings gonna change what happened and You’re there to deliver. You never want to lose it over something like that as long as no one got hurt keep going especially in front of a client or talent. Also she clearly kept it in the video edit so she’s setting an example of this instance after clearly stating she should have weighted it down somehow.
@loransalabood3386Ай бұрын
Not sure about using the flash in this case, the photos weren’t that good to be honest. You would use flash when you want preserve some environment details while maintaining proper lighting for the subject. The photos I have seen were close ups anyway, so she could have gotten better results without the flash harsh lighting. If I were her, I would have taken wide shots to show the view.
