Lyrics:
There was a man back in '95
Whose heart ran out of summers
But before he died, I asked him
Wait, what's the sense in life
Come over me, Come over me
He said,
Son why you got to sing that tune
Catch a Dylan song or some eclipse of the moon
Let an angel swing and make you swoon
Then you will see... You will see
Then he said,
Here's a riddle for you
Find the Answer
There's a reason for the world
You and I...
Picked up my kid from school today

This song always reminds me of how much I love my Dad. I'd like to think that even if my Dad was a drunk or I didn't even know him I'd still be the man I am now, I'd still have overcome everything the world threw at me. But the truth is, I couldn't have done this without my Dad. He was always the wind in my sails and the wise voice in my ear. I know not many young men are blessed enough to say this, but my Dad is my hero and I wouldn't be who I am without him. Not even close. This song is incredible.

Every song this man does is beautiful, and his messages are haunting to my soul. I was not blessed with a loving father, but I have a Heavenly Father. Your dad's problem stands to me came from being on this earth, it had nothing to do with how he felt about you. You answered your own thought some how some way you made it through that and your father did too. Remember the way you see yourself came from your father's fight. And God freed him from that burden when he passed through the gates of Heaven. No two better arms to be in than God's. When you find yourself feeling down remember you where his child before the booze got a hold of him.

I really like youtube for a lot of reasons. One of them is because I can simply plug in my favorites and let'er rip. For the longest time I forgot all about this one-man-band called Five for Fighting that my sister, Jenna, and I loved. She was my only sibling and I lost her last year to a disease called ALS ("Lou Gehrig's Disease"). Anyway, one day when we were in our late teens/early twenties, long before kids, careers, or deadly diseases, we were driving somewhere together in her old beater and it came on and we started singing. When we realized that we both knew every word, we kinda looked at each other and grinned. Jenn reached over and ranked up the radio and we sang our hearts out. No idea where we were going or why, but I had forgotten it completely until I accidentally stumbled across it on youtube. Even then, I only had a vague recollection of it meaning something to me at some point in my life. So I mashed the "go" button. By the time the song was over, I was sobbing my heart out and laughing my head off because I can so clearly remember her singing her heart out with me that day and I just hope and pray that she's up there, singing her heart out with me still. Thank God none of us can hear her (mood-lightening statement).

I like how John talks about his relationship with a mentor or his dad in the beginning of the song and can't quite fathom the meaning of life as passed down by that older person but it all makes sense years later when he himself becomes a parent with his kid asking all about the meaning of life when it is in fact just: "You and I". Sometimes things your parents or mentors say make a lot more sense when you're the one in the driver's seat.

There are secrets that we still have left to find There have been mysteries from the beginning of time There are answers we're not wise enough to see He said You looking for a clue I love you free The batter swings and the summer flies As I look into my angel's eyes A song plays on while the moon is high over me Something comes over me I guess we're big, and I guess we're small If you think about it, man, you know we got it all 'Cause we're all we got on this bouncing ball And I love you free I love you freely Here's a riddle for you Find the answer There's a reason for the world You and I

What i love about 'Five for Fightings' music is that it always teaches me something. After every listen, i learn something new about life and how i want to live. I think that thats what is missing from the modern music out today, the teachings. Sure you can write songs with a catchy tune, but it takes something truley amazing and beautiful to to make a song that changes people, changes the world.

Five for fighting was my best friend Richards favorite band.... It's crazy how time flys.. I never thought I'd lose him like this ... He used to always ask me if he made a difference... I wish I could tell him how much of a difference he made... I took his friendship for granted and I hate myself for it..

I was 6 living in my home state of Florida when this came out. This song always came on, on the radio. I remember we went to the beach around the afternoon to watch the sunset one day, me and my family were just staring when the song came on, on the radio we brought. We all just sang along, and I remember otheres coming to join. Think like a bonfire with a lot of people, expect there's no fire. Just peeps coming together and singing. *Sigh* good times. Ill always remember that day, and this song.😊💓✌

Talent like his is always recognized by smart people with musicality like you and your friends on the beach. Too bad today's music executives seem only to be interested in $$ and getting laid by the acts they sign.

Five for Fighting was always such a good songwriter. I hate how much music has been changed in the past 10 years. If rap wasn't a thing, he'd be a top 10 artist of the 21st century and I'm sure of it.

The only thing better than the band is the piano playing lead singer. Seriously, nobody has rocked a piano like this since Elton 50 years ago. And the accompanying band is just awesome too.

seems like yesterday i was 16, curious and excited about my future. now im 38 wishing i could relive my past and worried about whats gonna happen next. time flys and life goes by way to fast. one day your 16 without a care in the world, the next your pushing 40 with a family to take care of, bills to pay, and living in a world full of hate

But it's good to know there are other people who have the sensitivity and good taste to appreciate his music. Such melancholy in his songs as well as your post. Deep thinkers/feelers are being starved to death in today's pop music world. I hope you appreciate your family and life as it is today. 20 years from now you will remember it differently (better) than you do today. God Bless.

This song rocks even though I miss hearing it on the radio. Such fond memories! My mom suggested that we were going to play this song from 16 years ago for my grandfather's funeral, but we didn't have much time to get the equipment ready for a slideshow presentation as a way to do a tribute to a family member who died from prostate cancer complications. In fact, I added it to my "Father's Day melodies" and my "Upbeat Travel songs 3" playlists that I made on Spotify. It has also been added to my "Travel songs with bouncy qualities" playlist that I also made on iTunes. My mom loves this song so much. Thank you for thinking of her. 👍🏻 if you're listening to my cousin's 12th birthday song idea during quarantine.

I've always liked this song ever since I had to hear it on the radio every day back in 2006..but it didn't become real for me until I randomly started singing it to my newborn son. Now I can't think about it without getting the feels.

Thanks Mate!! People you love never really die. They just live on through you. It's nothing anyone else can see but I find myself saying his sayings and trying to instill the same values in my children.(work hard, be honest, love with all your heart, do your best, help as many people as possible) I'm lucky. I made my peace with my father before he died. It is the most important thing for a man to do. But so many men don't do it or even try. Advice. Make peace with your Fathers!!!
