Five Miles/Five Miles from Town/Five miles Out of Town clawhammer banjo Lesson from Joseph Decosimo

Here's an Old-time clawhammer banjo lesson for Clyde Davenport's setting of Five Miles (aka Five Miles from Town, Five Miles to Town, Five Miles Out of Town). In the banjo lesson, I play 5 miles fast and then slowly. At the end I give a more thorough walk through/lesson. It's the companion part to a fiddle video of the tune that I posted last week. I'm trying to capture how Clyde Davenport played it on banjo (and I think it's pretty close to what he did). Clyde played several Old-time banjo styles. This piece is played in a downstroke / frailing / clawhammer style. I'll be posting another two finger up-picking banjo version of the tune soon, so please subscribe if that's interesting. I'm a bit sharp Double C (gCGCD). It's fiddled in D, so you'd need to crank it up if you're playing with a fiddler.
PS: I love teaching Old-time banjo and fiddle lessons if you're into this kind of stuff. Great video. I'll have to watch it again banjo in hand. I'm sure it's a lot different than the way I've been playing the tune. I don't usually play it two-finger because I like to brush (of course, I can brush with two-finger, too), but I look forward to that, too.

Thanks, Steve. His approach is interesting. There's some places where my "usual" banjo take followed the melody all the way to the bottom of the bass, but he turns it back around. I had to rewire my version/instinct to match him. Regardless, I hope you enjoy it. He was quite a banjo player.

Please go on 'belaboring' your points - they are so worth it. Eg. the one about sliding up instead of going to the 5th string (ala Wade Ward) to catch that note that time.
