The PS1 version is so different because it's based on earlier builds of the game rather than the final version of the game. It was most likely due to poor communication between the studios during the development as the PS1 version was handled by a different studio.

On the topic of Polokus and Jano, I forget how much of this is explained in the yellow lum lore, but basically, all of Polokus' dreams become reality; that's part of how Rayman's world and people were created. And that's all of his dreams, including his nightmares. Jano was the first nightmare Polokus ever had and I think it is meant to be basically he dreamt of an evil version of himself, hence the same hat
@Petronious3 жыл бұрын
it's a shame the game itself leaves that detail out, cause its a neat idea they could have shien in another cutscene somewhere.

@PlotlinePlus Жыл бұрын
@@PetroniousIt depends on which version your playing. The PS1/PS2 versions are missing the information. The game has a sort of "lore" that you can access by collecting the yellow lums. It is just a small bit of text unlocked every small milestone that tells you details about the land of dreams and it's inhabitants. It's really inconsequential, but it was cool to me when I was a kid. Hadn't played a game with lore before.

Great video! About Jano's and Polokus' hats: In the lore, Polokus (the god of the world) dreams, and his dreams become reality. When he has nightmares, it creates monsters, which are sent to the Cave of Bad Dreams, and Jano (the guardian of the Cave of Bad Dreams) is tasked with guarding the cave and its evil inhabitants. So there is a slight connection between Jano and Polokus, although it still doesn't explain why they have the exact same hat

Funnily enough, the PS2 version was actually my first version of Rayman 2 (aside from a demo level I had on PC and also a few bits of the N64 version I've played at my cousin's house) and at the time I thought it was just a new game since I bought it after Rayman 3. When I started playing it, I was like : "I'm liking this but why does it have worse graphics than Rayman 3?" Then after coming across the few levels I was familiar with, I realized I was actually playing Rayman 2 lol. Later down the line, I got to play a few other versions (N64, PC and 3ds) and realized how much extra stuff was crammed on the PS2 version, obviously it didn't feel bloated to me since it was my first exposure anyways but I definitely see where you're coming from, the hubs themselves aren't exactly easy to navigate and there's a lot more loading times to deal with as well. (Special mention to the abomination that is the 3ds version for having several bugs in the hidden "1000th" lum room including a guaranteed crash when you leave the area through that exit. Also, the flying missile likes to move on its own in that version, making that final level way harder that it needed to be.)

The time put in here to cover the game in such detail is clear as day, loved this. 25 minutes to get to the combat? The build up was satisfying. And as for what those "electric ping pong balls" are: did you know that the DS port of Rabbids confirmed that Rayman's energy shots are actually lum energy? Yeah, he punches in some games and shoots in others, but does BOTH in that game with the power tied to collecting yellow lums. Fun fact about the random military guy that Razobeard buys the final boss from, that's actually a character called "The General" from the PC version of Ubisoft's actual first 3D platformer called Tonic Trouble, which was essentially made as a prototype for what Rayman 2 would become. To be more exact, Rayman 2 started out as another 2D platformer, but when the team saw the possibilities of the new consoles that were being made, they switched to 3D to take advantage of that. Unfortunately none of them had ever worked on a 3D game before, so they needed a new engine and some practice before they felt comfortable working on a sequel worthy of the Rayman name. At least that's the story I'm familiar with. EDIT: So I did a bit more digging and apparently that wasn't really the case. Tonic Trouble and the 2D Rayman 2 were developed by different teams at roughly the same time, but were conceptualized by the same person, hence the similar graphics.

One smaller thing that's interesting to me about this game is the character animation. You'll notice the characters are a tiny bit jittery with their movements in the DC and PC version, not as smooth as the rest of the game, but this isn't an issue on PS1. So it seems like the animators animated everything at the lower framerate of the PS1, while the rest of the game was tailored specifically for the Dreamcast, which seems to be the target platform for the most complete version of the game. Very strange...

Rayman 2(PC) was THE game of my childhood. Got it in the summer holidays after my first year of elementary school and played it almost daily till the CD stopped working (around 7 or 8 years later). Originally, I was supposed to get another game, but that one didn't work on our PC at home, so my mother returned it and got Rayman 2 instead. It was the first time I played a "3D" - Game and it was amazing (even though I couldn't beat the game because of that stupid flying - rocket - part) ! For clarification: The PC - version is basically the dreamcast version with a few small changes (such as the overworld being the hall of doors from the PSX version) Many years later, I bought the 3DS port to be able to play the game again and it's definetely one of the better ports. It's almost the same as the PC - version with a few differences, even though some of those differences are kinda stupid. 1. Red Lums are basically pointless, because whenever you "die" by falling in lava, piranha water, etc. you basically lose all health and respawn at the last checkpoint. In the PC - version, falling into lava etc would cause Rayman to lose a bit of health (not everything) before respawning at the last checkpoint (with the reduced amount of health). So Red Lums are only useful for healing damage taken in fights... and once you get used to the combat system, you barely take any damage at all because you can dodge most shots fired at you. Because of this, it's actually harder to see the Game Over / "Try again!" - screen in the 3DS port, because most deaths in the PC version would be caused by "environmental hazards" (such as lava) and in the 3DS port you just respawn with the old/full energy instead of taking damage. So you have to let Rayman die in combat in order to see the screen (which even isn't that good anymore because they removed the jingle that used to play along with it). Plus: In the PC version, there are special animations that play if Rayman lost the last remaining amount of health by environmental hazards. It's basically a longer animation of that environmental hazard killing Rayman (such as Piranhas attacking him) before the screen fades to black and the "Try again!" - screen appears before then cutting to a loading screen followed by Rayman restarting at the start of that part of the level you died in (green lums only served as checkpoints as long as Rayman had some health). Because of those changes, some elements of the game basically lost their purpose and / or their charm. 2. It's possible to get the secret 1000th yellow Lum (the one that Razorbeard basically destroys in an early cutscene) by reaching a secret area in the "Tomb of the Ancients" level. In the 3DS - port you can get there as well, however when you try to leave that area via the exit at the end of it, the game just freezes / crashes. You can exit the level via the menu after getting the lum without going to the exit but it's still quite annoying. Apart from that, it's the second bedst version of the game I've played so far (with the PC version being the best one). Plus: I perfer the jibberish over the PSX voicelines anytime. Some of the voice acting is ok but some of it is just terrible. Totally monotonous. I prefer the jibberish that actually manages to convey the emotions it wants to convey.

I always liked the ps1 game more, the voice acting felt more fitting, i find the levels better paced and it has the better final boss. Sure as hell lobe the pc version as well. (On the voice acting, the fact bosses talk helped me love the game even more. It gives bosses actual reason to fight or help rayman)

Well, Petronious. I know that the PlayStation 1 version Of Rayman 2 The Great Escape does have cut content and a good chunk of levels were trimmed down or completely removed and reducing the levels' sizes in that version, but it's still enjoyable to get through. And the Dreamcast version does look exquisite. I like the Dreamcast, PS1, Nintendo 3DS, and the PS2 versions the most as the best versions of Rayman 2 for me. The worst version is Rayman DS, due to the lack of the analog stick. and yes, the PS1 version is missing a lot of stuff because of sound files bloating up space on the disk

Having played the PS2 version for last, I hate it. Literally everything new they added was boring or straight up offensive towards the pacing of the game. Moreover, the marginally higher graphics fidelity came with the exchange of having only half the framerate of the DC version, which still looks better if hooked with VGA so it could output 480p60fps.
@DoctorRayman11 ай бұрын
The PS1 version was my first exposure to R2 as well (aside from the GBC version but that's practically a different game with the same story) and to be honest, whilst I do accept that nostalgia probably plays a part in this, I can't bring myself to hate it as much as everyone else seems to do. Yes it sucks that a lot of the game has been cut, but I actually think the voice acting is pretty good all things considered (better than Revolution anyway!) and I loved the additional dialogue they added with the mask guardians. I also prefer the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire in this version - it seems that the optional segment was essentially merged with the compulsory bit, and it makes the dungeon feel larger and more eery. Heck, I think there's even a new segment in the middle that doesn't correspond with anything from the original. So yes, I really think the PS1 port deserves more love, even though you are right that the high amount of cut content probably wasn't necessary.

Played the PC version first, it was like my fav game ever for a long time (ever since i was 5). I'd say Dreamcast is equal, all others are downgrades and Revolution on the PS2 is the definitive one for me. But I agree they stuffed too much in it, and it's really more fun for someone that has seen the regular one and wants 'something more', like an expansion pack to it. Wouldn't recommend anyone playing to start with that one ;)

I remember being super disappointed the absence of a fourth Polokus temple. Already the 2nd and 3rd temples were a bit same-y (lava, lava, lava...), even though the 2nd one was supposed to be fire themed and the 3rd one was supposed to be earth themed. So I was looking forward to the "air temple." But nope, not in the game. I mean, yeah, okay - Revolution on PS2 added an air-themed mask guardian. But still no air temple! An air temple MUST'VE been planned at SOME point during development! But there's absolutely no info on it. Which I find weird. Really, nothing? Nada? Not a single mention anywhere? How curious. First the SwordQuest series on Atari 2600 got canned before AirWorld came out and then Rayman 2 had water, fire & earth temples but no air temple. Coincidence? :P

To sum up some versions that I know: N64 - the original PC - the original but better (my personal favorite because it's so balanced) Dreamcast - almost like the original but added some content PS2 - added way too much content PS1 - removed way too much content

I also grew up with the PS1 version. After being berated & having rotten fruit thrown at me in the street (although that might not be to do with Rayman 2), I felt like playing the PC version of Rayman 2 this year... and I had to use a terrible joy2key program because the UPlay version doesn't have a modern fan patch like the GOG version. I got through the game just fine for the most part, then the ending section just destroyed me to the point that I gave up. May purchase the GOG version just for that patch or try to get the Dreamcast version up and running. Some jank aside, I did enjoy my time though. It's a very cosy game with such a great atmosphere. I appreciate what 3 tried to do but I feel like I vibe with 2 a lot more. It deserves to be ported this much because it's a lovely game everyone deserves to experience in some way. Yeah, I didn't stick with Revolution. I'm just not a fan of the hubworld either. Maybe next playthrough, I'll try again but not any time soon.

Rayman 3D on 3DS was the only way I was able to experience this game. 😔 Despite its bugs, rough frame rate on certain levels and broken skyboxes I saw in at least two of them I did really like it and got myself to look past the technical issues since I know they weren’t in the original game. With the remake news we got this week I really hope the remake that we’ve learned about is gonna be of this one as I’d love to play it without the problems I experienced on 3DS.

This was a very well crafted and thorough video about Rayman 2, so it’s kind of a shame it almost completely ignores the N64 version, which is the original. I think that version looks great for a N64 and it’s well worth a shot if someone has a N64 but not a Dreamcast for example. Still miles better than any PS versions.
