😂😂 I can’t imagine too many buyers thinking “shall I buy a family SUV or a two seat sportscar”. You’re making a meaningless comparison. And who’s “underrated” it - most road testers loved it? It doesn’t sell because it’s has the core engine and interior quality of a $20k car not a $75k one. Beautiful and good to drive as it is, Europeans are still just buying Caymans (and the brave now Emira’s) and I guess in the US it wouldn’t be getting anyone out of their Corvette, hence Renault don’t even bother trying.

Great review. And as an owner I can even agree a bit with the critique. Still really happy with mine. The light weight, the rotational mass close to the center of the car, and how the car rotates around you give it something special. The fact that the suspension is comfortable (thanks to lightweight) makes it such a remarkable car on actual roads. On a holiday (filled with luggage) I drove a very badly maintained road in Croatia mountains with constant corners and hairpins and the occasional spot of gravel. An absolute joy to drive. Also its comfortable enough to actually use it, since even a highway onramp or a roundabout is already a lot of fun. This means I even take it out on boring commutes in winter - and still have fun with it. Even though it does not sell in big numbers this car (and its factory) was also never setup to be sold in high numbers. Its a success story. I honestly see this car as the perfect middle ground between MX5 and GR86 (though their engines being in front makes it a very different feel) and a Porsche. And honestly other than perhaps a little luxury and a little better engine sound I don't see the value of the Porsche. And the Lotus for me would be the choice over the Porsche but I don't think I would favor an Emira over a A110. The A110 is what Lotus used to be but slightly more daily drive friendly.

A few pennies from myself having recently test drove the Alpine A110 GT through south Wales. After 5 minutes I was sold. Its just the way it sits on the road, I almost want to say the road works for the car and not the car works for the road. Acceleration hits you in big gulps of turbo, you soon realise you can carry that same speed through the corners making it very quick down a B road. You cant hear it in the video too well but once you get into the power band and the down shifts, the fizz and whoosh from the turbo does add charater to a very responsive engine. Unfortunatly, I have to wait until my house move to buy one in Europe. Great review as always Harry.

@@TheAmbler looks like someone eat the whole marketing bs book from renault and now regurgitates all the bs info towards others. This car should have been a manual.. but the poor guys(engineers) at renault were forced by suits(marketing and finance) to build it with an auto.. because in 2015-2016, when it was developed, any "serious sports car" had a dkg, pdk, dsg and etc.. and so, they had to work within the set limits, having no porsche GT money to develop two gearboxes for one car. The same suits at Renault decided against clio rs 16 and also decided against a manual clio rs IV(because drivers want automatics, right?, riiight??) which brought a colapse in clio rs sales which concluded with thr end of the RenaultSport brand last year; basically, one bad decision after another and yet, there are ppl like yourself who applaud them for going automatic only. 🤦🏿♂️ #posers everywhere these days.

@TheAmbler9 ай бұрын
Well it's the truth. No buyers = no money. Porsche sell 9 PDK Caymans for every 1 manual. Maybe the uptake would be slightly higher on an Alpine if it were offered, but still more would opt for Auto. Its a lot quicker, not that outright pace is everything, but also with paddles diving into hairpins or S-bends and the like at speed you can keep both hands on the wheel at all times. That, plus daily driving is made easier. I like a manual, my last was a TVR so I'm no bore, but the obsession over Manual is odd. Yes I appreciate on paper the Alpine is in a different league in terms of price and outright performance but traditionally EVO has seen past these two factors to offer intriguing comparisons. I would suggest if someone is less interested in 0-60 times and looking for a lightweight sports car with delicate, precise dynamics then the Toyota, Mazda, or maybe even a Lotus Elise are far more closely matched than a heavy 4 wheel drive Audi TT, or GR Yaris. Was also just surprised that Harry doesn’t appear to have reviewed the world’s best selling sports car.

I have a GT in exactly that spec and colour. I adore it for the reasons Harry highlighted. For me, lightness is everything and the A110 proves why. And as road car, the GT is the sweet spot in the range. I don’t miss a manual box. The fact is that paddle shift is quicker and lighter than a manual set up. However, I’m lucky enough to have other performance cars with sticks in my fleet if I feel the need. For the uninformed out there, you need to read David Twohig’s book to understand the real reason why the A110 was never designed to have a manual option.

The R just come a VERY close second to the GT3RS in the EVO car of the year… VERY close! I daily an S and it is more of a Lotus than Lotus can do these days. The last chance to own and drive something truly light weight. Comparing this to anything other than a 4c is madness. The difference in weight to the offerings from Lotus and Porsche is the equivalent to having a full grown Grizzly bear in the passenger seat… 300kg+ The weight saving allows a rare level of engagement without the liabilities that come from the huge masses found in the heavier alternatives. Nimble doesn’t even come close. Slightly heavier than an Elise, a tad under an Exige but with 300bhp and 300Nm. The Getrag 7DCT300 gearbox is fine. Most people that will ‘only consider a manual’ often have to admit that, in this package, it isn’t as important as they first thought…😊

Great. I just ordered a 2024 soul red Mazda MX-5 RF Kazari, 6 speed manual. A raw, minimalist sports car that is not about speed but driving fun, among the most fun at any price. Beautifully made and finished, beige nappa leather etc. If you want to wear a grin round your head when tossing it about on twisty country roads, give it a try. I did and now I can’t wait for it to arrive mid-June.

Last month I saw my first ever Alpine(s), two A110Rs both in blue (Bleu Alpine and Bleu Racing Matte), they're unbelievably tiny. Here in Indonesia we don't get any Alpine officially, but there are 3 A110s here including one Edition Premiere in Blanc Irise, however the owner of that A110 Edition Premiere does not want people to know about its existence and told the seller to remove all evidence. Complete opposite of both A110Rs, the owners are really chill about driving them on weekends. I wish I can have an A110R one day.

Maybe one little point in favor of this A110 compare to a 718 Cayman is depreciation. At least here in Italy these seems to not loose any value in the used market.
@neilturner67499 ай бұрын
Yes it appears they’re selling so badly new that they’re almost “collectible” from the outset! Cayman (if with 6 cylinders and a manual) still a way better all round proposition though…

I'll never get this whole "not selling" argument. The Alpine is made in a small factory and is hand build. They simply cannot build them at a faster rate then they do now. Its already passed the original targeted production volume. And its not like new ones are sitting all over the place waiting for a buyer. They do well. If they would sell as many as Porsche would then one of the arguments (its something special) would also disappear.@@neilturner6749

It's nice of Harry to do a revisit of the A110. Yesterday I found myself in the Alpine showroom again. rationality still wins from passion, but barely. I can settle with a Legende to give it a stage 1 upgrade later. Speaking of driving glasses, a simple set of yellow glass does the job to reduce bright glare. Which reminds me of those awesome Alpines with retro yellow headlights..

a year later and my a110 got a stage 1 upgrade bringing it to 307hp and 404nm (which is more than the A110 R!)

There’s a car dealer near me who routinely sells Hyundai iirc yet has recently had not one but two, Alpine A110s. I’m no expert but the shape, colour, treatment of the headlights triggered immediate recognition. I haven’t dropped in to have a good look at them, so I’ve no idea what they’re asking for them. I think the formula sounds terrific. I regret the steady bloating of cars through my life (b1960). I know from my own experience of motorcycles that it isn’t (all) about power / torque. My most enjoyed “joyride” has just 40 horsepower, but it’s lightly built, feels like it has perfectly linear output vs rpm & has the sweetest gearbox. I can thrash it through the rural A & B roads without being silly or reckless. Most people would choose my retro styled Suzuki GSX1400. It’s not that powerful nor it is light, but it delivers at the time I bought one (2007) the highest torque figure of any road going motorcycle. All well and good, but you can’t wring it’s neck because you’d be in jail simply revving it out in just 3rd gear, let alone the remaining 3 cogs. Technically, it’s by far the better machine and, for distance, I’d choose it. But for pleasure, it’s the very limited Suzuki GT380B. Harry pointing out that the power in the Alpine shouldn’t be underestimated because it’s so light is spot on. I will check to see it’s dimensions!

Only problems is the reliability, it really is plaged with issues, being french we get 80% of the production here locally and its common to see some on the side of the roads especially in warm weather. Fuel pump quitting, water pump quitting, cracked windscreen, destroyed front strut tower, ebrakes issues... Mine quitted on the highway at night in the middle of nowhere, really unpleasant for a 10 000km car.

Thanks Harry. Crazy to think how much cars have increased in weight over the years. My 1995 Golf GTI 16v was roundly criticised at the time for being bloaty and overweight - so I thought I would check the spec sheet for my car - it's 1090Kg! Actually a fair few kilos lighter than the A110 GT - which is being described now as flyweight! When it comes to sell my car I think I might describe it as a Golf GTI 16V Superleggera! ;-)
