In this video I cover five top things to think about before bringing your puppy home. I have found most things on Amazon here but the two extra dog coat companies are also listed below:
Just to note - with regards the bones - go for the larger knuckle type bones not the thinner rib bones as these may splinter I believe - always review items yourself before purchasing for your dog, I am not a vet or dog trainer.
Equafleece - www.equafleece...
Woodlands - www.woodlandsd...
Amazon Links - www.youtube.co...
Our History
We were only getting one puppy, Gracie but then fell in love with Sapphire, Saffy for short and couldn't let her go. Mum is a black and tan and Dad is a chocolate dapple. Gracie is a silver dapple and Saffy is a silver dapple with white. We are fully aware of double dapple issues but she was not bred from two dapples and is very healthy so far. We would not breed from her either.
I will be doing twice weekly videos on their progress and training and any new and fun things they get up to. Subscribe to support the channel and thanks for watching!

@jgsmile1331 Aww, I'm sorry about your doggie and best friend. This is my biggest concern. When buying a pup, is there anything you can do like, ask the breeder certain questions regarding health history of parents? Or is ivdd simply pot bad luck? I wish I knew what to do or who to buy from. My son is getting one and it's the one things I'm worried most about.

@@deborahol Our doggie was a rescue. They ppl decided they didn't want to do the work involved in having a dog. We were glad to have her; she was a smart, loving young dog with an agreeable personality. We still miss her. She was supposed to be a pure breed, no papers. Others that have gotten pure breeds not necessarily of this breed commented that breeders that want the puppy back if it does not workout in your home were the best bet to get a puppy from. Ask for names of ppl that have gotten a puppy from the breeder and contact them. Also talk to the vet they use in their business. Another vet can check out the puppy before you buy I would assume. Best wishes. No matter what you get love them and give them the best home you can and you will be greatly rewarded for it.

@jgsmile1331 I know certain people don't deserve to be in the presence of a dog, let alone own one. Well, I'm just glad she found you and was able to enjoy the majority of her life being well taken care of and loved endlessly like she deserved. Yeh, I was looking at some breeders again just yesterday and found one that said the parents were tested and both scored the lowest for ivdd. I didn't even know that could be done, so that was really reassuring. Our new member of the family will be treated like royalty, just like our cats, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My grandparents always had dachshunds, but it's only recently after researching so much that I found out about this terrible back problem. I'm glad you never had any problems, too, and I'm sure you've got so many amazing memories in your mind of times with your beloved girl.

My dachshund is 17 years old now and still going strong with no IVDD!!! I know i am unbelievably lucky, and I've found myself going through all of these tips through years of trial and error. I'm glad you are using this guide to prepare others while they still have their puppies! As long as you protect their backs (and keep their noses out of trouble) they will be in your life for a very, very long time!

My doxie girl lived two months past her 17th birthday, and like yours she had no trouble with IVDD. She was very healthy I only fed her homemade dog food, the recipe was one put together by a vet with supplements. She died of old age, she had a very happy life with lots of love, and snuggles. I miss her so very much she was my heart.❤

I've had 3 doxies and none have had a problem with IVDD. I think it may be more of a genetic problem. But that doesn't mean not to take steps to protect their backs. Rosie was 18.5 when I lost her, Cinnamon is 16 this month and Jasmine is 12ish. Cinnamon is pretty blind due to cataracts but she still navigates OK.

I agree with all of this… We haven’t had too many serious issues with our 16 week old black & tan brothers chewing, they do get into things they shouldn’t sometimes but we quickly divert their attention to their chews and toys, we also use bitter apple to keep them from chewing what they shouldn’t and it works well. Speaking of them burrowing, we got ours tons of blankets and also carpeted cat scratchers that they can get inside of that they love playing in. It’s like they’re getting into a hole. They also get up in the morning around 7am to go out to potty and go back to sleep for a couple hours also. We also are using collars that so far they’ve done great with. We’ve used the Gentle Leads on our big dogs for pulling and they’ve been a game changer, but we never had to use them on our Doxie’s. None of them have ever pulled, in fact they usually want to be carried for their walk, lol. We’re curious about feeding raw, we’ve never done that but want to with our new boys. I’ll be checking out what videos you have about feeding raw.

I had three doxies growing up and I lost Hilde to IVDD in my first year at uni. It only took me 40 years to be able to open my heart to another dachshund. Then I adopted Trinket, a rescued chocolate dapple smooth. Trinket died in October 2023 at the age of 15 and this October we welcomed Elvis, a black and tan longhair. He is asleep at my feet as I type.

Thanks for this information - Gracie and Saffy are gorgeous💖. I have had dogs (big and small) for the last 30 years, and have found the Halti to be the absolute best for walking our dogs. I would absolutely recommend the Halti to all dog owners. (just be aware that some dogs get rather annoyed with them and can wriggle around and chew them off...ask me how I know this 🤦‍♀🐕)

Because of their long backs every one of my dachshunds are taught to not get on the furniture. They learn that I pick them up and I put them down. The reason for this is because even though you have ramps they tend to jump off the furniture anyway and that can cause major problems with their backs. My friend stopped feeding her dogs raw meat due to E.coli and other things that are bad with raw meat. It made one of her dogs deathly sick. Bully sticks are amazing treats they last a very long time and you don't have to worry about choking hazard. They are one ingredient 100% natural and my dachshunds love them

They may be strong chewers but their teeth are not necessarily that strong. I used to give mine bones to chew until Rosie got a slab fracture. She had to have the tooth pulled and the vet cautioned against giving them bones. Just something to be aware of. And yes there are small blankets everywhere. They have steps by the couch and a ramp by the bed. Also doxies have a tendency to become overweight so one needs to guard against that. But they are a joy to have in the house.
@scarlettzo

I have had the same experience with my adorable Dachl, Siggi, now 5 years old. I used to give him bones to chew. Three months ago when he was being inspected for return travel from Europe to the US the vet discovered that BOTH his upper back teeth were fractured, one a few months previously and the other right at the time of inspection. Both teeth had to be pulled. He is fine now, but it hurts me to know that Siggi must have had toothache. And, unbelievably, he never gave a sign that he was in pain. I just shudder to think of it. In our case I think one thing that might have done the damage was a piece of a deer antler, a real one bought in a pet shop, which I remember as being heavy and as hard as concrete. I clean his teeth with an enzyme toothpaste. My only problem with that is that we have a little battle to get the toothpaste on his teeth before he licks it all off to eat it!!!
@bethsojourner6798

@@scarlettzo My Rosie didn't act like she was in pain either. The vet found it during a cleaning appointment and pulled the tooth. She was fine afterwards. Rosie lived to 18.5. Now her younger sister, Cinnamon 16, is starting to go down hill. She was not doing well the last 2 days but today she seems better. I need to call the vet to help determine the best course of action. Hope you and Siggi are doing well. 😊😊

Another thing about dachshunds is their oral hygiene is really important. They have a tendency to build up tartar very easily. Had docsons all my life, they are truly the best breed of dog. Just be mindful of their backs, be patient but persistent with the boundaries, and be ready to have a little heater always by you or on you! :) And maybe consider getting two rather then one. They have bad separation anxiety and tend to be lonely by themselves which prompts them to act out. It really does help them to have a friend

the last product, that muzzle strap leash... we have a dachshund girl mix of soft and wire haired and she tends to pull like crazy on the least and because her main owner suffers from chronic wrist pain, i looked up what might help and these popped up! Unfortunatelly they are also expensive as frick so i just made own one from old harness and oh boy her tendency of pulling is now on the very minimum! Unless she sees a dog she is friend with, then she doesnt care and pulls even with this haltie lmao

They can be, double dapples definitely do have issues and some dilute colours can too.

I just got a Dachsie pup. He’s about to be 4 mo’s. He’s lovely and a perfect addition to the house. Our current issue is he starts playing nice, then begins to bite, soft at first and then more aggressive and a bit harder. Is this normal from Dachsie pups?

Start brushing teeth regularly as young pups to get them used to it. Blankets--I look down and only the right side of Bud's tail-end is peeking out from under the covers.
@wendybutler1681
@wendybutler1681 Жыл бұрын
He LOVES playing with towels and blankets. His instincts leave me in awe. He can pick a creep out of a crowd in a heartbeat. The coats and sweaters need to cover their bellies, too. A lot of pavement grime gets tossed yp by their massive feet. Bud is a 17 pound standard longhaired. Harness is vital. They can take off like a rocket at anything that runs. You can also use a sturdy harness to lift them out of trouble with the leash if you need to. I was NOT going to bend down to pick him up and put my face right at mouth level of an angry German Shepherd so I hoisted him straight into my arms and gave the doofus of a shepherd owner a lesson on being a courteous and responsible dog owner. The dog was magnificent. It was a toy, a possession to him, not a companion with it's own wants and feelings. He had no clue how to handle the biggest, best looking German Shepherd I'd seen in nearly 60 years of loving dogs. When I say magnificent I really mean it. Just a pup, too, with no discipline or manners. Massive, gorgeous dog and he was gonna ruin it. Infuriated me and broke my heart at the same time. Poor dog. My golly, that man made me mad! He had no manners, either.

It can depend on Mum and Dad, Gracie is smaller than Saffy by about a kg and our friends have an even smaller little girl. Has yours been spade, that can sometimes restrict full growth but that's more so in boys x

In all honesty I would go for a collar whilst they are pups, my two managed to slip backwards out of the little harnesses. Once they are bigger then invest in a tri point one which they can't pull off and always check between the front legs as it rubbed one of my dogs there. Harnesses are definitely good for dogs if they don't pull but ours have now settled into their collars, hope it goes well xx

Had to put my last weenie down a few years ago:( hardest thing ive ever had to do.. Now i have a boy, 2yrs old hes a red piebald dapple #5 and i love him to death. He also loves me to death. A few things i do are: My bed is off the frame and on the floor to make it easier for him to come n go. A harness is better for walks too cuz hes stubborn at times and collars choke. I dont dress him in cold because our walks are short and it doesn't get that cold here in Roseville California anyway. Lastly he loves tennis balls. My last boy loved rocks. My last female loved nothing but food.:)))
