I disagree about the backpack - IMO, backpacks are incredibly handy and some of us don't have safe, reliable options for ditching it before riding. For me, I usually keep a sweatshirt, an action cam + cam pole, wallet, and goggle lenses to do swaps whenever needed. I hate riding with full pockets vs. a backpack.

Glove liners are actually great because you can use them in combination with a lightly-insulated or non-insulated shell glove and modulate with various weights of liners for varying weather. Also keep the shell glove on a handcuff leash and pull it off any time to use your phone, operate GoPro, etc, without your hand immediately getting cold

My thoughts on some of these as an intermediate-level rider: Stomp pad: Never had one until about 2 years ago. I was riding a T lift up a hill, the top of my board was slippery from the melted snow, the tip of my boot hit something on the ground (I have big feet), my foot slipped off the board, and I ended up messing up my knee (thankfully didn't break or tear anything, but had to stay off the board for two months). This probably could have been prevented with better balance or something, but knowing that the stomp pad is there to keep my boot from slipping around really is a confidence booster to me. Leash: Have had this since I started boarding. When I was learning it did help to avoid the board sliding away by mistake if I took it off while on a slope. These days I only put it on out of habit, since it no longer serves its original purpose. But! when I am walking to and from the slopes, I loop the leash around the other binding and use it as a shoulder strap for carrying my board. Much better than carrying it by hand! Headphones: I love listening to music on the slopes, it actually gets me pumped and makes me ride better. But I also want to hear what is happening around me, especially where other riders are coming from and so on. I always did the awkward "one headphone" thing before, but last season I bought some open back in-ear headphones (Sony LinkBuds in my case), and this has solved the issue finally. I can now listen to my music while I have conversations and I ride the slopes, without fear of getting plowed from a blind spot. Glove liners: Didn't even know that was a thing, never used them. Backpack: I agree that a large, heavy backpack is unwieldy, potentially dangerous, and throws my balance off. But I carry a small backpack made for these kinda activities, which has just enough room for a water bottle, GoPro and accessories, wallet, power bank, and headphones case. That way I am not burdened by extra weight, but I still am able to carry some basic necessities, especially if I'm somewhere with no lockers etc.

Backpacks are great you can store water, snacks & layers / lenses for changeable conditions. Just keep them light and they won’t affect your riding. Headphones get me hyped which always helps me push myself and progress Glove liners are great for changeable conditions / warm & colder weather options also most of them work with phone screens so you can still have a layer on whilst using.

EXCPETION: if you are Alpine snowboarding. A leash is MANDATORY. Just like ski bindings snowboard plate bindings for hardboots can come loose when the crash is sufficiently hard enough. At that point a leash is needed to prevent your board into becoming a projectile

1)The stomp pad totally helps. Yes... its not 100% needed, but that reassurance is nice after a long day or for new riders. 2) The board leash is a good idea for step on's or flop backs. Also a MUST for snow skates. 3) Headphones are a distraction and make your spacial awareness go way down. 4) Get used to a backpack peeps!! Not only will it make you a better rider when it's off...(like goku's weighted cloths) But if you ever leave the resort its a must!! Med gear, replacement parts, food, water... you're gonna die if you don't have help or a plan. Also do yourself a favor and get a 12L or smaller style pack. Unless you plan to be in the backcountry for the whole day.. or even multiple. I have a 30L for those nasty long trips. But I find that my 12L holds enough to safely get by on most trips.

I don't want to return to the car and I take all my food and drink up the mountain with me to save money. I don't ride better or worse with or without one. Also there are open back headphones that you allow you to hear your surroundings just fine. If you feel like music is not needed when riding, why have music in your videos? Music and snowboarding go together brilliantly. You're not using it in your circumstance but many others will have a great time with it.

some things for example as the inner gloves and backpack depend where you ride. If you are doing 65km+ round trip in Val Gardena you often need to see the skimap and then inner gloves are perfect! Get rid of your stomp pad. I've been riding a few years without one now and it's the best decision I've made. With a stomp pad I feel like you can be 80% in control with one foot, but without a stomp pad (and proper technique) I think I'm closer to 95% control (100% control when both bindings are strapped up). When you don't have a stomp pad you're almost forced to push your back foot against your back binding which locks it in better for me. With a stomp bad you get the foot stability, but I don't feel as fluid when making turns with one foot if that makes sense because your foot is pushing against the rubber which isn't as 'strong' or grippy as the front of your binding which is screwed in). If you don't lock your back foot then you should have a stomp pad, but next time try pushing your foot against the front of the back binding as leverage, and you can honestly traverse around the lift areas and top of runs much easier. This made getting off of the lifts as well as navigating big crowds (like at the top of schoolmarm) without having to fully walk or fall/run into people

Really? Stomp Pad: Well, looks are everything and just like that sticker you're trying to sell, some look really cool. Leash: Sure, if you're experienced you won't need it. But a beginner needs it since they're getting used to the board and don't wanna lose it, turning it into a projectile down the slopes. BACKPACK??? You definitely NEED one. Something that winter taught us is a layering system. No backpack, good luck. Plus a shovel and other tools could be useful even within resort boundaries. Plus snacks, hydration, etc. True you won't need a 35L bag but a slim 15-18L is more than enough. Glove liner, depends on your gloves, I guess. But yeah, separate liners are not the best idea. Earphones: In this we agree a 100%. Plus I could imagine someone hitting their head hard sideways and that thing already in their ear going deeper and...

Agree with everything, especially headphones. Inexperienced riders taking up the whole cat track not paying attention with headphones on so loud they can't even hear you calling out to them is frustrating 😜

How about five+ best things. Skier here with discretionary income. Over 30. 1. Storing skis at Tuning Shop. Makes skiing so easy, and bases always slide perfectly. 2. Multiple neck gaiters. Wear a thin and then a think on top. 3. High end Ski Jacket. Buy something warm. You look cool too. 4. Goggles with lens inserts. I am near-sided. Having 20/20 vision beats the hell out of "use the force" field of vision when skiing. Also helps take in the awesome views. 5. Rental Car - size up. Would rather have a Tahoe with space for your stuff then crammed in a 4 seater. 6. Custom Boots - worth every penny. Gets you balanced, pushes you to cuff the boot and makes sure that your lower body is working for and not against you. Get your inserts checked every year to make sure they are not packed out. Finally, every three years or so, refresh your skis. Sell or donate to people who need them your old skis, get the latest in tech.

So I use a stop pad like all the time, because midwest mountains are so small i never usually strap in most of the time unless im doing tricks or something and even then sometimes.

I didn't think they were necessary either. Until the day we were riding with the Grom and he turned around in the chairlift and his board hit my speed release on the top strap on my binding releasing it letting it fall to the ground halfway up the Mountain. Luckily it was October and it missed the white ribbon of death. I was able to walk down to it. And yes they are a must with step-ins I went to step in this year I love them.

The backpack was the first thing I ditched when I went from beginner to advanced. Have to say it made a drastic difference in my riding and balance. I ride with a small fanny around my shoulder with essentials and its much lighter.

100% I agree with 4 and hesitantly agree with the stomp pad comment. I've always used one except for the new board I'm on right now. I didn't have time to get one for it and rode two days without. It's fine. No issues. But I will say, it's still a nice thing to have - especially when getting off the lift next to some ski squirrels. They'll nock you off your game! But yes, officially not required - just lock in against your back binding and you're off to the races.

The reason i say you do need a stomp pad is to get stickier snow off the bottom of your boot easily/effectively

any form of protection is never unnecessary. It's like insurance, if you never have any accidents then sure you can complain, but when something does happen you'll be happier with them than without

Gotta admit, you're sticker promo caught me off guard this time. The glove liner actually made my hand hot and sweaty. I love my backpack bc I'm a newbie. My friends spent probably a total of 2-3 hrs on the mountain, most of the time they're eating and drinking. My last trip I occasionally took a couple minutes to drink water/ Gatorade and eat my cliff bars. Other than that, I was crashing and learning. Was at keystone at 8 for the 8:30 lift, and snowboarding until closing and then headed to night snowboarding. For me, the backpack was essential. Bc I'm 75% alone, I put 1 earbud in and spend hours on the mountain. When my buddies join me, I do remove it though. My must have for learning are: knee, elbow, and wrist pads. Next year I'm getting the padded shorts. I'm 40 years old, learning to snowboard, it's crucial to not break anything for me.

I keep my shovel/Avalanche gear, spare parts/tools, IFAK, skins/poles and some food/beer in my pack. Just got a Dakine backcountry vest to try that does seem like it will be a bit more ergonomic. Most of us at Mt Baker at least seem to be riding and hiking with packs and avalanche transceivers.
