It's funny (coincidence wise) that you sent this video today. My employer cancelled satellite service for our office months ago. Coworkers were complaining about no tv so I went out and bought a Clearstream Eclipse, as our office is located in an area with strong signal reception (Toronto area). The office has a huge bay window, and is located on the first floor. I wasn't expecting miracles but the results were less than stellar. I moved the antenna while watching the signal meter on the tv. Best results were with the antenna placed on a cinder block wall, picked up 35 stations from Toronto (35 miles west) and Western New York (towers are 85 miles south of my office location ). Needless to say I was very surprised. Just shows that there is a sweet spot in every area, just have to use common sense to find it. Thanks for your efforts.

@@AntennaMan I have a Sharp TV that the indoor antenna quit working in the middle of a show. I walked through the troubleshooting steps with Sharp customer support and their final suggestion was to have it serviced, on my dime, which is not a smart way to go. I have swapped out the antenna with others that I know are functioning and the determination is that it is the ‘board’ that it plugs into has failed. The TV works fine with a ROKU box - just the antenna outlet has stopped functioning. Any suggestions, tips, tricks or options? Thanks, Bonnie

Hi Tyler! I bought an Antennas Direct V Max antenna about a week ago. I mounted it about 20 feet on RCA TV pole and a bracket mount on the side of my house. I live about 50 miles from the farthest station. I just want to thank you for reviewing this antenna. It is working like a champ! 67 channels came in. All of the major networks are clean signals. I bought an antenna you recommended ( the one shaped like an 8 with a line through it) , used the website you recommended and a compass to aim it , threw away my junky old "amplifier" and used a 6 ft piece of quality cable to hook it up . The tv sits next to the window with the antenna just outside. Over a dozen channels with excellent reception. Thanks for your help

Tyler is the real deal. After 2 years trying various antennas, amplifiers, etc., I finally paid his small fee to get a personalized recommendation. Best money I've spent. Bought the right antenna, pointed in the right direction, and problem solved. I live in a dense, forested area 40 miles from the stations. I now get 90% signal in all the majors and 20 automakers channels versus before. Can't recommend him highly enough.

I just purchased a Clearstrem Max V and experimenting I live in Batavia Ohio 25 miles out of Cincinnati Ohio I first hung it on the wall and got 31 channels the same when modified a wooden coat rack and hung it on it but tonight I moved it down 4-6 ft and at first 64 channels including three from Dayton but lost them rescanned them again and got 54 it seems to be doing better when moved down the original spot ..I watch you videos all the time and enjoy them as a kid I'd help my dad with putting up Antennas on our house when growing up back in Georgetown Ohio so I had some experience doing this at the time when 300 ohm flat wire was used and used a signal booster from Radio Shack it tougher then 75 ohm is much better .

Thanks for the video, Tyler, always enjoy them. I have been a HAM for over 30 years and specialized in homebuilt antennas...many failures and a few successes...the learning process. I have a Winegard 9 element Yagi that has one VHF element and the rest are tuned for UHF. This antenna has been on the mast for over 10 years now and has given me excellent service. A majority of transmitters in my area are about 40-50 miles away and some are even closer. You are spot on about your assessments, you get my thumbs up on every episode. Oh yes! As one who has only ever used antennas, I have made my fair share of mistakes over the years, especially during the unforgiving ATSC 1.0 era. Through trial and error, I eventually corrected most mistakes. Eventually I discovered your channel, and got verification for what I have done correctly, and got tips for the mistakes I was still making. Now I consistently get every channel in my area, unless the antenna gets shifted by strong winds, then I just have to point it in the proper direction again.

This last point... I live in Poland (near to Czech border), nearest broadcast tower is almost 30 kilometers away from me (there are trees, high buildings and many more obstacles like this). And guess what? I'm using DIY antenna made of cans. Yes, cans, I really mean it. Because of it's quality I'm using it as indoor antenna and... It works perfect. Sometimes you don't need an antenna from Amazon, sometimes you can make one yourself 😂

Tyler, another great video. You are absolutely correct, I always chuckle driving down the street when I see a TV antenna that is pointed backwards. For the average homeowner, the problem is that the sidelobe rejection on most TV antennas is good, but the front-to-back ratio is much worse. In other words, it's easy to see when you are pointed 90 degrees away from the TV station, but it's actually more difficult to see when you are pointed 180 degrees away from the station. Your suggestion for a signal meter would fix this, but few homeowners will buy one, and looking on a map of the TV transmitter sites should make it obvious.

pointing the antenna, I have watched dozens of your videos. The least expensive signal power meter I would recommend is the Mediasonic Homeworx DTV Box. Your review of this DTV box show this feature and the other recording functions. I am halfway betwix Hartford CT and NY, NY. Using a Televes DATBOSS LR Long-Range UHF Antenna (149783) with a rotator I could also add channels individually from both markets. Insights from your videos provided a wide scope of information. That's Awesome! Got the same setup. That 149783 is hard to get sometimes. I got mine from Ness Electronics when it was only $130. I'm in California. In the summer I get KTLA ch. 35 from Coronado. With the rotator I can get all the broadcasts from Mexico too. I use the Homeworx Tuner with a separate VHF deep fringe antenna though, the Stellar Labs 30-2476. I get Three additional VHF High channels pretty reliably as well with that. (Love watching live coverage of police pursuits through the streets of Los Angeles. It is the best!) When I cut the cord I was just looking for something so get my local stations, which I easily achieved with a small directional antenna. Then the antenna enthusiast bug bit me. The next thing you know over the next year or so I purchased 5-6 different antennas to see what other broadcast stations I could get; a little bit of a waste I suppose. But I can always sell or donate them. Anyways at least they weren't junk antenna thanks to Tyler!

@@villumschroeder1255 I am located about 500 ft lower than a hill top between most of the Hartford stations. CBS ch3 RF 36 was always a prior problem. Now it is fine and I can get CBS 2 NY,NY RF22 also. I also paid 129, I think using Ness via amazon. It is now up to 149 to 159. Also in both markets, the only RF VHF Channel is RF 10 channel 8 in New Haven.

Yup yup. The-in line Tuner/Recorder/WiFi capable box is the part that makes OTA shine. I was looking towards Tablo but in the end opted for the Sling Air TV Anywhere (note: this is not the same as their Air TV streaming stick). Offered at about $80 if you prepay for 3months of Sling streaming (which I was considering anyway to depart from Spectrum TV services). Excellent tuner, 4 simultaneous channels for viewing or recording. Small hard drive pre installed & no extra fees to send signal to phone or provide guide descriptions. Easy install. It may not be as robust as a Tablo but is working well for my setup. Every step from acquiring the right antenna to selecting the OTA DVR was guided by the Antenna Man videos.

I've seen a few of your videos and can now see that we do almost everything wrong. We have a Mohu indoor antenna and are not happy with the results. We've tried other indoor antennas but without much better results. We live in a townhouse, so it has to be an indoor antenna. The lay-out of our place is such that we are limited in how far away from the TV the antenna can be set up. These are bad limitations, so I don't think the advice is applicable in our situation beyond the improving the quality of the co-axial cable. That is good information, so thank you!

I watch your videos often and one thing you rarely mention that I was expecting to see mentioned here is GROUNDING! The reflector on an outdoor directional antenna must be properly grounded for best results. Same thing for RG6 you'll get much less loss if the shielding is properly grounded near the antenna or preamp. Great video as always you da man

I found that if I properly ground the mast and also the coax cable with a grounding block, then add a powered amplifier plugged into the wall outlet it will not work. Since the house ground is where I also attach the mast and grounding block wires (heavy gauge solid copper) outside it causes a short or something. I probably need a dedicated ground separate from the house ground. It was over a year ago and honestly I don't see a need since my reception is excellent without a grounding. Lightning is very rare here . Plus I would just unplug everything. Problem averted.

I use an outdoor magmount omnidirectional TV antenna that goes on a metal roof and I found that if you put the excess length of cable indoors to the digital DVB-T/DVB-T2 television set / PVR / set top box etc, the excessive length can attenuate the signal on some digital terrestrial TV multiplexes causing frequent squeaking and breaking-up plus pixelation. However if you put it outdoors and neatly cable clip the excessive length, the reception along the excess length of cable is maximised and signal strength / quality is improved on all transmitted UK DVB-T / DVB-T2 multiplexes. Don't forget to waterproof gromet the hole where the cable comes in using a rubber cable gromet.

I unknowingly pointed the largest fins on the antenna towards the towers. Kind of like resembling the shape of an arrow. Reception was bad. I eventually discovered the smaller fins should point towards the broadcast towers. I rotated the antenna 180 degrees and reception drastically improved.

Yeah, the "width" of many antennas gets "pointed" to the towers. That doesn't necessarily come across well. That's why VHF elements are referred to as wider, not longer.

Hypothetically, think of an infinite element antenna where the smallest element is only 1 inch. From a distance, it would look like an arrow and you point the antenna toward TV station antennas.

Somehow I figured it out in the 1970s, because all the neighborhood antennas were pointed at Needham, and I knew where that was.. My workplace had a radio amateur handbook that I perused. I've been away from both places for decades, but generally I remember the important stuff.

I am in a rural market , and fortunately had a career in CATV and understand very well about loss. The higher the frequency over a given length of Coaxal cable the greater the loss. Splitters are 3.5 db per port step. A 2 way split is 3.5 down and a 4 way split is 7db down so on and so on. I recommend a good preamp and amplifiers as needed due to loss in cable and splits.

@@richardlambert578 that idea sounds good to me depending on what stations you want to get I would look into a multi directional the one that you should avoid is the one with the roader turns it it’s all over Amazon under different company names it quit on me within a month it has two elements on the back and five on the Front that are smaller But anyway with long range antennas you might get Springfield if you point at the north jonesboro to the east harison to the west antenna man has done a video I think on a long range also use rabbit ears. Info click the signal search map if you type in your location hit the search button then move the push pin to center of the map view button set your miles at 70 then the go button this should tell you what you can get

I'm in an area where the big 4 channels span 61* and the PBS channel adds another 48*, so to get all it is a 109* degrees receive width. I have one of the sideways figure 8 antennas and it works fine. My neighbor wanted the most powerful antenna he could get, (very directional). After he installed it, and I saw it, I told him he had it backwards, he said that was best. It was too directional to get all our stations, so he has it backwards because it has a wider receive pattern that way.

One thing Tyler didn’t mention specifically in this video, but I did learn from another video of his is that many markets (especially larger ones) have an “antenna farm”. A location where MOST of the TV stations set their antennas. So by finding (using the websites he recommends) where these stations are grouped (the antenna farm) and aiming your antenna there, you should be able to pick up most of the stations available in your area (not just the big 4 networks).

I have a flat antenna set up in the attic and used DirecTVs coaxial cable already set up through out the rooms. I have only 2 tvs set up to the same antenna with a 3 way splitter with an amp. I get all the major tv networks with no interference. I think only 2 channels lose signal once in a while though...

Been doing tv antenna installs on the side for almost 30 years for a side job ....one of the biggest errors I personally see a lot is folks use a splitter eiither out side or in the basement ware the cable comes in to the house and they use a cheap splitter non power pass and even with a good amp like wineguard lna 200 near the antenna and the little power white cord connection often find close to there tv or sometimes in the basement before the splitter ... problem is often the splitter is no power pass cheap cable tv one and the power can't get up to the amp by the tv antenna up on the roof defeating the reason having a amp in the first place and I change out the cheap one with a simple 6$ one from Lowe's which is power pass and boom lots of station cones in they never had before sad that and often I find tv antenna install done and not either grounded or crappy grounding a future lighting strike to possibly burn there home down

2:07 I can confirm this is true b/c at a house I used to live at near Huntsville, AL, if the atmospheric conditions were good, I was able to pick up the Birmingham, AL channels with a flat multidirectional antenna (Mohu Supreme Pro w/ preamp). It would only work when the flat side was pointed towards Birmingham. When I turned the antenna 90°, the stations went away.

The one station I'd really like to watch is our NBC affiliate in Nashville in order to watch the Olympics. Our local NBC station is VHF, where all the other major networks in our area work on UHF and we can get them very well with a basic flat antenna (amplified). We've tried amplified antennas, non amplified antennas, paper back book shaped antennas and rabbit ears and tried them in every possible position and direction. No good signal with any of those for the NBC station that should have a strong enough signal as we live in the same metropolitan area. Going to an outdoor antenna is not practical. Suggestions? Oh, and turning off the amplifier on this flat antenna kills many of our other stations and we still can't see the VHF NBC station. Thanks for the video!

I just got a 4K antenna so I am good. All jokes aside, these are great tips. I do loose reception as there are some giant trees between my antenna and the TV towers. I would need to raise the antenna some 80 ft. or cut those trees down, my neighbors would not like the latter though.

RG 6 Quad shielded coax cable is for in-wall installation. The quad shielding makes the cable way too stilf for living spaces use often causing the coax ends to loosen or even pull out. Use regular RG 6 instead. It is very capable for short runs at providing a good signal protection, while being much more flexible and harder to destroy with your vacuum cleaner in your living spaces.

Can a signal be too strong? I have a clearstream 2V outside antenna setup. I have it pointed directly at a station that is 14mi away and broadcasts two UHF channels for major networks (Fox & CBS). A lot of time the channel will break up. This is the only channels I have trouble with. I can pick up a channel that broadcasts 47 miles away and 50deg off center of the antenna direction with no problem. I have been blaming the broadcast channel of trying to force us to go back to cable to watch football games because it is always worse on Sunday. Thank you for your channel. I have been following it since I cut the cord and you have given me some good advice. When I hear someone talk about getting rid of cable I recommend they subscribe to your channel and watch your past videos.

It could be a number of things - multipath interference or LTE interference. The best thing to do is use a signal meter to see if you can find a better spot for the antenna. See video below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5CmqmNurZqkm7s

Hi ya, Brad...funny you should mention that. In my computer/radio room my tv is hooked up to an outside antenna. My wife prefers family cable programs so we had ATT connect us up. I asked the technician if he would go up on the roof and rotate my antenna for me...he just looked at me like a deer in the headlights, I laughed and told him I was just kidding...heheheh...oh, me so bad...

Hey tyler, going back to your video about the HDMI to coax adapter and booster you recommended, I'm not sure if it was something I did and/or the converter and/or the booster, but, I notice that the signal output range is horrible. My grandfather's friend and I set up a antenna setup back in late 2016/2017 (before I knew about your channel, I think I didn't know about your channel until about a good 8 or maybe 9 months ago), and I tried doing a direct connection, and even then, the signal was pretty poor.

Thank you Melvin I appreciate you and everything you have done. I had a problem with someone getting my package and wiped it or added malware I don't know . I got the box had to set it up and it never worked right and the cable company shut me down a few times . Melvin remoted in and tried to fix it but seen there was more to it no questions asked and said hey send me that back and I will wipe it and go thru it put all the things that should be there. I was so impressed I got the 3 yr plan that covers anything to the box it is the lest I could do. I just moved outside Charlotte NC, and I was hurried to setup so I got cheap RCA antennas. They get me 50 channels if I put them near the windows. It might help that it's closer to transmitters here. I'd like a more sophisticated antenna, but I'm not sure what I can do with my HOA.

Maybe I missed it, but a mistake I've seen when mounting the antenna, is where the "front" (elements) and the "back" (reflector) are reversed. So it's pointed in the opposite direction.

I found a YT channel that provided a way to have a 2 antenna setup. It allows to have one antenna to be pointed for best reception in one direction and 2nd pointed in different direction to get otherwise unavailable broadcasting stations. To do this....have 2 identical antennas. Use a splitter in reverse mode...connect each antenna to (2 output splitter) to each of the outputs that normally were to TV. The splitter must be up near the 2 antennas on pole...use *identical length* short cables (~3 ft) connection to splitter. The normally antenna input side of the splitter now becomes output down to the TV. I've been using this setup for approximately 6 years now...has been working fine. Not all splitters will combine two signals. Make sure it's listed as a splitter/combiner. I still have a few of these in a box somewhere.

Have you ever used a Philips LTE Filter for TV Antenna, 4G 5G LTE Signal to Reduce Interference and Pixilation? It filters out digital noise, I believe.

Hey @Antenna Man. Great content as always. Might I make one request for a future episode? I have been championing cutting the cord with several of my coworkers. Over the past couple of years, I have convinced at least 8 or 9 of them to make the switch and they too are loving it. However, most of them ask me why it is that many of their high def channels list 1080i and not 1080p. I've done a pretty good job at explaining the difference to them, but it might be a good idea for you to cover that topic as well since you have a much broader audience. Here in the Houston, Texas area, our major networks broadcast via 1080i. The exception is our local ABC affiliate who broadcasts at 720p. Ultimately, it all looks great to me because my TV both de-interlaces the video and up-scales the 720p channels just fine.

For my signal strength, I use the built in meter in the software. Currently using a Radio Shack 15-1868 and RG 6 coax. Works ok, do receive the UHF station GRIT now, with antenna on counter, than when up on top of cupboards. For one VHF station I have to place dipoles in walking path or no good. YMMV

The main idea is to not buy the ones that have typically are called “HD antennas” online and have those thin cables that he showed in this video. Antennas like the Clearstream Eclipse are a more reputable brand and those antennas let you connect your own coaxial cable to the antenna so you are able to use an RG6 or RG11 cable with dual or quad shielding.

I have seen antennas on roofs pointed the wrong way, the reflector pointed like an arrow toward the transmitters. That could work if the signal is strong enough and the front-to-back ratio of the antenna is not too good.

I have intermittent reception with only 2 channels and they are the only channels in my range that have both DT1 and NG1 suffixes. All others have only DT suffixes. Could the NG1 classification be causing this reception inconsistency?

If this is truely the case then why would my indoor antenna work fine on one same brand name t.v. and scan the channels just fine BUT not finish a scan on the other t.v. the exact same as the one that did scan.. Your video is definately interesting though

I've found that a co-axle with the end stripped and the copper part about three inches long makes a pretty good antenna. Laugh if you want but I used one for ten years and got all the channels in the Houston area from sixty miles out. Now that I've moved closer and bought a real antenna o can't pick up nothing without having to move the antenna everytime I change channels

I have a huge antenna on my pole barn, a channel master from the 70s, pulls in the most channels of 3 of my OTA setups. This thing is ugly and rusty and held together in spots with zip ties but combined with a booster and rg6 and about 30 feet of drop line it’s pulling in Lansing to Toledo. I wonder if you can get IN from MI?
