Good episode, Brodie! Major League Soccer did just that thing you suggested: made a deal so that all games (ALL games) are available in ONE service, no blackouts, on any device, anywhere in the world, pretty cheap ($99/year - and FREE if you're a season ticket holder for any club!). Their fans HATE it. Mostly because they believe they should be able to get the games on rabbit ears or something. Yet it's incredible next to any other major US sport right now.

Regarding betting, I saw a survey in summer of 2023 claiming 26% of the roughly 450 American respondents spent at least $500 a month on gambling. If that’s an accurate representation of the average person, that’s insane. If you make $15 an hour, that’s a little over a fifth of your monthly income (pre-tax) spent on gambling at a minimum!
@Dratchev24118 күн бұрын
you can bet it is worse then that.. you got people that will spend damn near their entire pay on that shit. and for all the gambers, just like the lotto YOU AIN'T GOING TO WIN. and if you think you are a winner, you ain't you lost.
@johnchambers852818 күн бұрын
Part of that problem you can blame on the over coverage of betting. Years ago the media of all types did not speak of odds or sports betting in general. Now between the lotteries promoting those super high prizes that are almost impossible to win and then the general news in all media stressing those high prizes but not explaining the high odds against you winning. It is no wonder we are creating more problem gamblers. I grew up in a family that believed in gambling. Mostly on horse racing since that was the most available at that time. But we also played Bingo, cards and some other gambling games. However I was taught at a young age the basics of every betting type and latter in college took a course on statistics that we actually called it gambling 101 because so much of the course discussed the odds of outcomes and how it was determined. Most people have no idea of how hard it is to win any type of bet. That is one of the reasons the sports betting services are now stressing parley betting. If you loose even one part of that bet you loose. We need better education on gambling if it is going to be such a large part of ordinary life.
@controlyourvessel17109 күн бұрын
Then don't bet it's as easy as that. You people act like sports betting has just started these last few years. I'm Generation X and have been gambling on sports since I starting earning my own money. My sense is that relocation as a stadium negotiating threat was on a long hiatus because of expansion and tightening of city budgets. For the past couple decades expansion in leagues made it harder to threaten relocation because the likely relocation cities were getting expansion teams and there are only so many cities that have population and financials to be viable. But I remember threats in the the 80s and 90s all over the place because teams actually moved (i.e. NFL: Raiders, Colts, Oilers, Rams, Browns).
@bjdon9916 күн бұрын
For 20 yrs the NFL refused to put a team in the 2nd biggest city (LA) just to use it as an anvil to threaten other cities that their team would move to SoCal. The. When they did let the Rams move back, the NFL had to settle with St. Louis for the dodgy way the deal went down.

The good news is the threat to move teams is slowly going to become null and void. It feels like pretty much all of these trends are long standing issues, but if I were to pick one that feels like the worst among them, it's the deregulation of sports betting (at least here in Ontario, Canada). We went from having one government-run game where you had to build parlays of 3 or more games to 34 competing platforms, each with its own set of partnerships (with leagues, teams, TV stations and news media), inescapable TV ads (that would play multiple times on every TV timeout) , and increase in gambling-related bankruptcies. And I could swear a chunk of these platforms were arguing a few years ago that they weren't actually gambling platforms. I remember when leagues used to distance themselves from betting as much as they could because it was seen as a threat to the integrity of their games.

I can only catch Thursday Night Football now, on my phone, on my Twitch account. But most of the time, I forget about the game. One thing about the stadium lifespan: there is a logic to restricting it to 30 years in theory. A lot of municipal/government buildings are given 30-year lifespans due to commercial/mass usage, accessibility requirement changes/evolution, facility condition index, etc. Sometimes it's less expensive to raze and rebuild a facility than it is to maintain it. I'm a volunteer with a school board advisory committee and FCI is a big topic about once a year. With that said, I think the way you do in that there needs to be better forethought put into initial construction as far as futureproofing whenever possible. Be aware that things may and probably will change, and build your facility to adapt where and when it's appropriate.

What value are we as a society getting from this proliferation of sports betting on top of that? We're just enriching companies for luring people in with ludicrous sign-up deals and getting them hooked to throw away money. No real world value is created from people correctly predicting a match outcome or some stat line. The leagues and networks were doing just fine before taking ad revenue from these companies. I think the gambling issue would be solved if states required bets placed in person with actual cash, not credit. Betting on phones and apps makes it way too easy.

Leagues should mandate that every media company they license to, that puts games on their streaming service, has to provide a "deep link" to games so that aggregation apps like Apple's TV app and JustWatch can collect all games together, even when selecting launches another app. In Apple's case, Netflix and Fan Duel sports don't provide deep links.

1% of sports fans having a gambling problem isn’t enough for draft kings etc. they’re pushing for 100% of people to have a gambling problem

Its rediculous paying for a sports package only to have more games getting taken by other channels and subs

The marriage of gambling/sports book with pro sports is the one trend that is ruinous, and arguably can be connected to each of the 5 trends you’ve wisely called out. The reasoning is endless, but you and your subscribers get it!

I think the best multipurpose stadium in the world is the Sapporo Dome in Sapporo, Japan. It can smoothly transition from playing baseball to the play football (soccer)

I am from Japan and I watched A’s games in Oakland. The Coliseum was known as the worst stadium but I felt there like home. Now I feel so sad about the relocation. To me, the Coliseum is more than Yankee Stadium and fans were really great! I wonder how those great fans feel. I do not hate relocation and Las Vegas but I felt A’s movement is not proper.

If an owner wants to move, they should be forced to sell the team. Similar to what we saw with the Arizona Coyotes.

I enjoy sports, particularly MLB. But as it becomes more and more challenging to watch the games I want to see, instead of subscribing to more services instead I find myself losing interest. With so many other entertainment options, it becomes more like why bother? Yeah, if a game I want to watch happens to be available on a channel I already have access to, I’ll probably watch unless I have something more interesting to do. But I find that over time I become less engaged and interested in the sport. So when I can’t see a game, I miss it less and less as time passes. More often lately, I find myself thinking no imma skip watching and check out the box score online afterwards.

Thank you for #5. If you didn't mention this I didn't think I'd continue watching your channel. Gambling is doing more harm than good.

Sports betting is becoming a Cancer. I watch a hockey game and will see 2 betting ads just in one commercial break. Get back to the game and the boards are the electric ones and shows betting. Can see over 15 betting ads in a game.

How about a team - like the Rays - that trade away fan favorite players as soon as they become arbitration eligible and due a pay increase. Rays always have a great minor league system but as soon as these guys start performing they are used as trade bait to replenish the minor league teams. Hard to grow a steady fan base that way.

Weren't the 49ers going to fine the contractor like $1000.00 a day if Levis wasn't completely done on some certain date ?

I don’t watch sports live anymore. I download it afterwards with all commercials removed. And NFL, I download the condensed games that are just offensive plays, ~40 minute long game. Tired of endless commercials, sports betting shoved up my nose endlessly, it’s all garbage, it’s all a scam and these leagues aren’t getting another cent of my money

Relocation…you leave me, I move on! Why would I be loyal to an organization who doesn’t reciprocate? Gambling has NO place in sports!

MLB needs a salary cap .. It’s totally unfair that small market teams can’t compete .MLB is the worst run sport of all the big 4 ..NFL , NBA , NHL , MLB ..Manfred destroyed the game ..

A salary cap in MLB will never happen, if there is a strike over this issue in 2026, baseball will not be playing for a long time

You will also note that college football stadiums seem perfectly capable of remodeling/rebuilding a stand at a time... when they have to. NFL/MLB/etc. are just selfish tbh.

Regarding betting, how long before we get another ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson’ incident? Sometime soon, we’ll get some player, coach or worse a referee (Tim Donaghy) get exposed for throwing the game or deliberately missing or ghosting a call…
