Seems like a very nice little catch can for tight engine compartments. I observed your comments on whether or not to leave it so low. Since it has a vent/filter attached, I highly suggest that you get it away from the low area's because the filter will get absolutely coated and plugged in no time. Particularly so if you are in the snow belt area's. It will either get snow and ice covered, or saturated with road salt/chemical road de-icing or all of the above!
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 5 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Fortunately this car sees no snow (I don't drive it in the wintertime, it stays garaged and covered), but it is a valid concern for those of you who do drive your car in the winter. Also If any of you don't have that plastic lower under engine cover (I forget what it is called ATM) I would highly suggest getting one, it helps keep the splashes/debris out of the engine compartment!

Hey man love the videos. Have you noticed any issues running that occ vta? Did you have to update the accessport for that or just run it like that. I have an 07 speed3. And not sure if I want to run vta or sealed
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 6 жыл бұрын
No issues. I didn't have to make any changes to the map I run either. The OCC I used has a check valve in their VTA that will only open under high crankcase pressure, it is one one the reasons I went with the Damond setup.

Do you get unmetered air going to your intake? I just ordered the same PCV plate and a vented catch can, but I'm concerned about an unmetered air issue and thinking about running the can sealed and just saving the vent for when I add a second can down the road.
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 5 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't experienced any unmetered air issues when I do logs. AFR's are right on the money. It will only vent when pressure builds enough to open the check valve. I haven't experienced that and I make sure empty the can regularly.

Thanks for the video! Can you tell us how many miles one can drive before needing to drain the OCC?
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 4 жыл бұрын
I tend to check mine every 500 or so mi just to see how much it is collecting but you wouldn't need to do that. According to the Damond Motorsports site: "Draining intervals can depend on many variables, climate, how the car is used/driven and for how long. We recommend draining the OCC and measuring its contents for 3,000 miles, at 1,000 mile intervals. Once you know how much is coming out every 1k, you should be able to gauge on how often you’ll need to drain the OCC. We generally recommend 3k intervals in temps above 40F and/or if the car is driven hard or for extended periods of time, 1k intervals in temps below 40F and/or if the car is primarily used for short trips."

Can you run one of these OCC without buying the damond PCV plate?
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 6 жыл бұрын
+Kurtis G Yes. You can run the lines to the stock PCV valve and then to the intake manifold, the Damond plate I got because later on I am going to be running a dual can setup.
@seanthompson8071
@seanthompson8071 5 жыл бұрын
Nice ... but you can make a PCV catch-can yourself out of all sorts of things. There's very little pressure in the PCV lines. No need for all the over-engineered billet cans out there with their 4,500 PSI fittings. We're not capturing liquid nitrogen!
@HoUsEoFcAtS78
@HoUsEoFcAtS78 4 жыл бұрын
This is a very valid point. But if you want your engine compartment to stay looking cleanand not look like you half-assed homemade stuff out of your basement, you would invest the money in a decent-looking catch can. Especially when you have a $6,000 engine under your hood. And you want to keep things looking clean and professional.not like some backyard mechanic made one out of an old coffee can and garden hose.

Do you think it will still fit in the same location even with the MAZDASPEED cold air intake (made by AEM) that places the air filter inn front of the left side tier?
@FiveFiveGarage

Ok I wasn’t understanding what these upgrades actually did until this video. So the main reason to install the pcv plate and oil catch can is really to minimize the need to frequently clean your valves and minimize carbon build up?
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! I will be adding another can to my intake side sometime this summer as well. I consider adding an OCC as a preventative mod, especially if high HP is a goal. The carbon blockage can cause flow issues.

How often do you have to drain these? I'll probably be selling my car in a year or so after I get it running again. I just wonder if this will attract or deter buyers..
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I am a bit fanatical with checking mine, I check it every time I fill my tank. But it really depends on how much the car is driven, and whether or not the next owner wants to keep up with it.
@HoUsEoFcAtS78
@HoUsEoFcAtS78 4 жыл бұрын
to be honest, I think it would be a big selling point considering the next owner would not have to worry about installing one. Because 90% of the speed 3 owners, are planning on doing some sort of modifications to theirs. And this is a good start to modifying any engine in my opinion. Especially since it removes probably a good 55 to 60% of the contaminants from the exhaust vapors.

Hi randy!! I have a question for you, is few weeks that I install the oil catch can and the pcv plate with a new pcv valve, and I have a oil leak in the valve cover oil cap also is with a breather, and is leaking from the cap filter, do you have any ideas what may be happening?
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 2 жыл бұрын
When the system is charged, the pressure will seek the path of least resistance. What catch can setup are you using? It sounds like your valve cover is seeing crankcase pressure which will seek the path of least resistance (blowing seals, coming out of the breather, etc). damondmotorsports.com/blogs/damond-blog/53965956-bye-bye-blow-by - this is a blog post from the Damond Motorsports explaining how a check valve in the system will prevent boost from past the PCV and reducing blow-by out of the valve cover. damondmotorsports.com/products/oil-catch-can-vta-option - This is the check valve setup that I am running on my OCC. I made this video almost 3 years ago (where did the time go!) and I have had zero issues with this setup.

@@FiveFiveGarage I have the same setup like you, damond motorsports, your videos have helped me a lot with this setups, everything is correctly installed I dont know why I got this issue...
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 2 жыл бұрын
What year Speed and how many miles? First thing I would do is double check everything one more time, just for sanity's sake. Next, I would do a leak down test. This will allow you to rule out the rings as a cause, a bad compression ring or cracked ringland (which happens a lot on these cars, like the Subaru) will cause pressure to get past the rings and charge the valve cover. Then that pressure needs to find a way out and that is when you notice your valve cover is leaking or your oil cap breather is saturated with oil. If you get a cylinder that has a higher percentage of leak vs the others, I would bet that is the reason why.

i still dont get why people are paying 200+ for a an aluminum can whats the difference between this and a 20 dollar can off of ebay?
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Peace of mind. Damond Motorsports is running the exact same pieces on their shop drag car, so it can handle high horsepower abuse. If I have any issues with the setup I can contact Damond directly and get a response fairly quickly. For some people running the $20 can is fine and there is nothing wrong with it. I have used Damond Motorsports parts before and they are somewhat local to me, I also asked a lot of questions and talked to people who have built Mazdaspeed 3's and the Damond can was recommended by all of them, so when the time came I got the Damond setup.
@WhiteGravey
@WhiteGravey 4 жыл бұрын
@@FiveFiveGarage what exactly do you think the difference is? its a can made of aluminum without any moving parts.
@FiveFiveGarage
@FiveFiveGarage 4 жыл бұрын
From the outside, yeah its just an aluminum can. But it is what's on the inside that matters. A lot of those ebay cans, they don't go into specifics about what the baffle design of the can is. Or what kind of filtration media is in there. If there is an oil scraper or not. You can contact the seller but chances are they don't know. Damond Motorsports has all that information on their site, as well as blogs detailing different OCC setups, and helpful information in general. I could have easily went with a $20 can and call it a day, but I bought this kit because it was designed by Damond for the platform, it came highly recommended, and I wanted to support a business that is making parts for my car that I enjoy. For me personally, this is what I wanted and didn't mind paying the extra for Damond's experience and knowledge base.
