I was there at Dodger Stadium when Tatis hit two grand slams in the same inning. At the time no one really knew what it meant because everyone in the stadium was so shocked to see one, let alone two, grand slams in the same inning. I was sitting on the second level on the third base side. Despite what you may have heard about Dodger fans, at least two thirds of the stadium stood up an applauded for Tatis after this feat, including myself. Clearly it was something special. It wasn't until about the fifth inning when the news about the record started to be spread around. A few people were listening to the radio (I'm assuming Vin Scully) and heard it. Don't get me wrong, it was an awful game to watch if you were a Dodger fan, but my friend and I figured we got our money's worth. At least we got to applaud for something that day.

I'd argue that the best chance someone would have to break the 5 HRs in two games would be if A) the guys in front of him weren't getting on base and B) the guy behind him was also hitting bombs, and C) the guy was also a fast baserunner in a close game. All of those things would make it more likely that the pitcher would still be willing to pitch to him and not walk him.

No, they would not walk the guy after a bunch of home runs in two games. Weird things happen over small sample sizes. Teams are not very susceptible to the hot hand fallacy here in the analytical era of our game. It's the same with the shift. Sometimes guys beat it. Sometimes they beat it twice or three times in a row. That's irrelevant to the trend. The fielders will still shift for the guy's next at bat.

@DrBeef2167 жыл бұрын
This is precisely the reason why the old time hitters aren't nearly as impressive. They were facing starters pitching complete games on three days rest. Babe Ruth was hitting 50-60 home runs off of perpetually gassed pitchers. No fireballing closers, no calculated approach to pitch counts, bullpens, etc, weaker average pitching, etc. There are a LOT of other reasons that are more publicized - segregation, evolution of the sport, evolution of the athlete, etc. But this one is huge, and no one seems to talk about it. Also, Rickey Henderson would never steal 130 bases today. With the replay killing a lot of would-be steals 30 years ago, he wouldn't have been nearly as high. However, the analysts do get it wrong regarding the value of steals with prodigious stealers. The idea that the dude is going to constantly run on you is in the pitcher's head, and distracts him, and that effect can't be quantified by any data.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that since screwballs, sliders and curveball have been in the game since almost it's inception. also relievers like Andrew Miller tend to throw their sliders 60% of the time in 70+ innings per season, whereas starters throw them at much lower rates. but the ferocity of the delivery is where I believe the problem lies
@RelaxingPuma8027 жыл бұрын
back in the day deliveries were smooth and easy and pitchers weren't always throwing at 100%...now every pitch it's coming in as hard as possible but it's no longer smooth and easy

Some more fun facts about that season from Rickey Henderson: the Cleveland Indians were the only *team* in the AL to steal more bases than him that year, and he didn't even play the full 162, he missed some of September with an injury.

If a player stole 100 bases for 14 straight seasons he still wouldn't beat Ricky. Hamilton averages around 50. He's not even gonna steal 800 let alone over 1,400

Actually I think his record for most losses in a career is less likely to be broken. No one will last in the MLB with 20 losses a year for 15 years. It is possible to win 30 games a year for 17 years.

Greg C "It is possible to win 30 games a year for 17 years." Yet there hasn't been a 30-win season since 1968 by Deny McClain did it through 41 games. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Dizzy Dean in 1934 who went 30-7 in 50 games. You say that it's possible... but not really when it's rare a starting pitcher takes the mound more than 34 times a year, and that could drop as more teams are using a swing man to start 10-15 games a year and cutting down starts for the rest of their rotation. I mean, this only applies with the very most literal definition of "possible". Personally, I don't think anyone has any chance at all of breaking either of Cy's records. The best pitcher of all time, Walter Johnson, managed a record of 417-279 in 21 seasons, but he didn't pitch in half of his team's games like Cy Young did. We've also entered an era where 300 wins isn't even a probable milestone with 5+ man rotations, quick-draw DL trips, pitch limits, and excellerated bull pen strategies.
@Unlitedsoul6 жыл бұрын
Jerry Mcmanus I get what he was trying to say, but there's nothing relative about his statement. Neither of those records have any chance of being broken in the modern era of baseball... and for the same exact reason. No one will ever have an honest manner of reaching either of them. So, they're pretty much equally unbreakable.
@BingCherry116 жыл бұрын
Good point! If batter hits 4 homers in one game ... on the day following that day that batter can be sure that the opposing pitcher is going to pitch to him with "extreme" care and will make it a point not to throw him anything "good". And if they walk him he should not be surprised by this!!! Lol!!!!

I'd say Roger Maris' record of 61 home runs by a non-cheater is unbreakable.
@JacksonL2176 жыл бұрын
Roadstar1602 Stanton got 59 and he didn’t even have the highest homerun percentage it definitely will be broken
@Roadstar16026 жыл бұрын
L Droppers 59 is not 61, and 61 home runs for a non cheater has stood for 57 years, so no it won't. The only way the record is going to get broken as if there is some rule change in baseball. Something like allowing corked or aluminum bats, bringing the outfield walls in, lowering the pitcher's mound, or something like that. Hell, the record has even withstood 27 years of the Colorado Rockies being in the league.
@JacksonL2176 жыл бұрын
Roadstar1602 you could also argue babe Ruth had the record because Gwen babe Ruth played they had less games and hit 60 homeruns before Rodger maris
@Roadstar16026 жыл бұрын
L Droppers I would not argue that at all. The man never played more than 154 games.
@Roadstar16026 жыл бұрын
L Droppers Not to mention the Babe was swinging a tree trunk because back then they thought a heavier bat made the ball go further. As it turns out, the opposite is true.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Matt Kilroy's record of 513 strikeouts in a single season. Even if you pitched in half your team's total season games you would need to have around 7 strikeouts per game. Amazingly, Kilroy did this as a 19 year old rookie.
