For your information, this video is still helping out. Just replaced the header, exhaust, and valve cover gaskets on my Craftsman YTS 3000 with this video alone as a reference. Thanks and keep doing what you do!

Ivé seen another one of your videos regarding head gaskets on the OHV engines and since then i have replaced about 20 of them with succes.. I have som info to make the job a bit easier: 1: The two pins in the block that supports the gasket are easy to take out, which makes the sanding easier. 2: I find it easy to use one of those cork sanding blocks and some fine sand paper to get an even surface. 3: The intak push-rod tend to wear on that part that, where it runs through the guide in the head. Simply reverse the rod and you do not have to worry about replacing the rod in the near future. Your videos are my bible, Dony. Have a great day.

Thank's , easy to follow instructions. Made it fun. I think you may find it interesting , I am seventy , retired , the only experience I have is when a teenager I had to work on my old cars to make them run.Took me three times longer because the heat here in Virginia this time of year, had to work first thing in morning 6am-9am then 6pm to about 7:30 because the sun shined into my shed .The only real problems where my fault , over the last few years my grandsons have been helping out Pa-Paw and I did not notice no maintenance was being done, so everything needed replacement ,fuel filter and gas line (twisted off in my hands) ,air filter (embarrassing bad) and so on !! I think the one thing that made me try and that was when you told someone "Its not rocket science " ! Thank you again . William

I was on my riding mower today and it started to smoke like crazy under load: a 17 hp OHV Briggs. I opened it up and it was exactly the problem Dony diagnosed in this video. Exactly. The gasket set me back $10.00 and now I'm good to go. Thanks a million, Dony!

Hi, I know this is an older video, but it sent me in the right direction. I have a ten year old 17.5 HP Briggs on a Snapper mower, that was burning blue smelly smoke. My suspicions were correct; the head gasket was blown in between the cylinder and the push rod chamber. It took a lot of cleaning up, and cleaning the carbon off the piston and the valves, but all back together and the valves adjusted, and it runs like a champ now, and no more smoke. Thanks for your excellent videos!

Just finished replacing the head gasket on my Troy Built 110 with a B&S 550EX. When I finished i had no compression. I reviewed this video and found I had missed the step where you open the OHC cover and reseat the valves. When I did that it ran like a champ. Thanks for all you do.

I also enjoyed some of the little Canadian touches like the Mastercraft wrenches. Many thanks for your efforts and keep up the good work.

Gee .. It's really amazing that there's a common sense, "master mechanic" out there that genuinely wants to - not only show how to do a repair right, but really wants to "help"people, and save' them a world of grief,so they won't be doing something wrong or stupid, and mess something up, and have to trash it.. Thank you so' so' much Master Dony !!! I absolutely love watching your videos !!- I've been wrench'n on small trks. Harleys, lawn mowers, and snow blowers since I was 16... I'm 72 now 😬

THANK YOU! This video is EXACTLY what happened to our Huskee Supreme SLT 4200. The mower repair shop said it was DOA. Disassembled & inspected valves, rockers, head, cylinder, etc., all in excellent condition with no signs of wear: the only indicator was the little burn by the cylinder. $20 worth of gaskets and some time cleaning out the really bad carbon build-up, new spark plug and now it's running! Your video saved our mower, because we were convinced by the mower dude that it was beyond repair. YOU ROCK!

Great Job Don. I like how you break down everything step by step. I might add 3 things. 1: A thicker head gasket may prevent blow-out due to increased thickness, but it will also lower engine compression slightly (less HP and cylinder pressure). 2: There is a formalized head bolt torque sequence in the B&S OHV repair manual. One should always try to use the formal sequence if available. If not then the cris-cross method will work in a pinch (as you already showed). 3: Three separate torque wrench sequence steps should be used to even out the loading on the gasket, head, and block (6 lb-ft, 12 lb-ft, 18 lb-ft). Otherwise great video. Mike K., Chicago, IL, USA. ASE Master Technician, BSME Mech Engineering, Former Engine Development Engineer Navistar Engine Corp.

Great explanations, lighting, camera work, and editing. I'm subscribing. I thought it was a little funny that you cautioned us to be careful when cleaning parts in on open tub of old gasoline while we also see a woodstove burning to heat your shop in the background. Once when I was a kid messing around, we had a bonfire inadvertently light from around 20 feet away from the invisible vapors along the ground. Please be careful, I think you should be declared a national treasure.

Very useful information. I really never thought about pulling the engine apart and checking the head gasket. Cars and I'll hurt me That's the first thing I would do if I'm burning an excessive amount of oil. I pulled the heads and check those and the gaskets. You mentioned something about this guy had bought a new head and it was a small fortune. What I do I go to my local machine shop. Just for one head they will clean and put new seats in and sometimes new valve guides. The most I have ever spent on one head was $125. Now it does take a week or two before this particular shop has your head back to you. Normally I'm goofing around with enough things in my garage that I just push whatever I'm waiting on the head for into the corner. A long time back about 12 years I broke my back at work and as a result of that I have it extreme insomnia. There's been plenty of times I've gone out into my garage and the next thing I know it's sunrise. I crank up the stereo or just turn the TV on and watch that as I'm working on different things. I found the information in this video very useful. Look forward to watching another one of your videos thank you for sharing.

Great video, right to the point, well illustrated and great graphics. I just used it to replace a blown head gasket on a Craftsman 17.5 HP Virtec engine that was blowing a LOT of blue smoke. I first had to replace the carb because it was severely flooding the engine and crankcase. After replacing carb & changing oil, started up and ran but still blowing smoke. Next, replaced Head Gasket, now running perfectly. Your video gave me the confidence I needed to do it myself, without paying $$$ to a shop. Keep up the good work!

Good video. One tip; Mark TDC before the head goes back on. Also, that backing off a 1/4 inch (towards end of video) is done to set the clearance for the compression relief. That reduces load on the starter while cranking.

Only 2 things to reinforce: 1) Retorque on head bolts after 2 hours running is crucial - key to long lasting head gasket repair. 2) Get an accurate Inch pound torque wrench for these small engines - I've got an Harbor Freight unit I trust - we use it in our bike repair shop where small torque values are common. Great video Don! I definitely recommend re-torquing the head bolts after 3 to 6 hours run time and even on a new engine they should be re-torqued. I have noticed on quite a few of these you can gain almost a half a turn with the torque wrench. These overhead valve Briggs are kind of poorly designed, there is quite a span between head bolts and quite thin in this area making it the weakest point. You are right, with some of the after market head gaskets are better than the OEM ones and a bit cheaper sometimes.

Nice! Very well done!!! Not to take anything away from folks like yourself that do small engine repair, but I've had some of the worst experiences with a few dishonest small engine folks. I finally decided to understand and gain the knowledge needed to start doing my own repairs. Have tools, willingness to learn and skilled with my hands. Excited to see what other videos you may have. Thanks a bunch. You're awesome.

Thanks for a great video. first viewed it over 6 years ago and used this knowledge many times since; Most recently on a B&S 19hp 33r877 0004 g1 and the failure was exactly as you described. When reassembling I had a brain fart and my friend tried to compress the spring with a long screwdriver while I replaced the rocker arm. He slipped a couple of times and later I found a piece of metal that looked like half of a small 1/4" by 1/4" piece of some sort of sleeve or spacer. Did not see where it came from so I finished assembly and then the engine was hard cranking even though I adjusted valve lash to spec. The battery was weak and it would start some times if I turned the engine by hand a bit so I left it on a charger. My friend says it is still hard cranking with fully charged battery but spins fast with spark plug removed. I looked at diagram on Briggs site and there is a valve seal on the intake (illus item 868 part 690968) that might be the mystery part. The diagram shows this part on the intake only; is that real or do you think they just drew it up that way as a typical? Would that piece missing cause misalignment to mess up the compression? It did crank easily before I worked on it so I am assuming it is not the decompression bump that is not working. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ok so yesterday I watched your video. Although my tractor is a 12.5 HP the proceedure was the same. I did not have to adjust the valves which save a few minutes. Again I work on cars often so kmow my way around a wrench. It took me about 4 hours to do the gasket due mostly to cleaning time as the tractor was a mess. Again I say GREAT VIDEO and Thank You. Gotta go go cut my grass.

I had the same exact problem with a similar B&S engine. It was burning so much oil that it was hard to see where I was going while cutting grass. My local small engine shop told me that the replacement gasket I purchased ( B&S OEM) was re-designed by Briggs when they became aware that there was an issue. New gasket has been fine for over 2 years.

Its a good idea to flip the pushrods over so the bit the was wearing on the guide is at the bottom over time they wear you can see and feel it. and eventually they break there by flipping them you get a second go with them 👍

From all of the folks who post how "to repair stuff" Donyboy73 is 2nd to no no one. He explains everything he does and why and also shows how he puts it back together. I think I need to replace the head gasket as it smokes like crazy and this happened like all of a sudden. Now I have a 15.5 HP Tecumseh engine.

Great Video. I"m good to go. I work on cars all the time but knew nothing about single stroke engines. I am 100% sure this is a project that won"t be a big deal. The valve adjustment instruction was outstanding. Thank You!

Brilliant as always Don. Always a pleasure to watch and learn tricks from you. I post many self help videos on the older Cast Iron Briggs, but I'm always working on these newer engines as well. On running the engine without the oil check tube secured, I HAVE had the crank case pressure throw the tube from the oil port...makes for a big mess to clean up if you don't have it secured when test running without the blower shield in place. Cheers! Zip~
