Yes, it's quite surprising to me. I still don't quite know what the 'magic formula' is for what might make for a popular video on KZbin. Now, if only the other videos on my channel would see even a fraction of the popularity and views (the majority of my vids it seems are lucky to get 10 or 20 views in total), then I'd have it made. :D But hey, I'm thrilled that this chair-fix video of mine has helped so many people.

Even quicker fix!! ...This inspired me to take a quick look at my sinking wheel base and I literally took just a binder clip to fit in as a spacer against the seat pole without even taking the wheel base apart at all. Didn't even need to invert the chair for better access. I just slid up the plastic sleeve cover and spotted where a spacer would stop the chair pole from sliding down. One medium large binder clip worked, but I slipped in two just for good measure. I had to flip back one side of the wire flips on the binders so it would fit up against the pole better. Then I slid the plastic sleeve back over it and voila! A perfect fix in 30 seconds to a longstanding problem that I've put up with for 2 years! Unbelievable instant fix!!! I liked my chair too much to replace, but endured the continual nuisance of it repeatedly sinking all the time. Problem fixed!!!! Thank you for the inspiration to invent a fix of my own! More simple than I could have imagined!

"Serious money" confuses me. Are cheapo chair manufacturers adopting an ink cartridge pricing model for their gas cylinders? I just replaced some parts on a Global Furniture Group commercial-grade chair I bought for $700 Canadian about 20 years ago, which now costs over $1400 Canadian, the gas cylinder was only $24.20 Canadian plus tax (at about 71¢ USD to the CAD), and it only took a rubber mallet, a pipe wrench, and a can of penetrating oil to replace it. (Specifically, I replaced a worn out seat cushion, replaced a cylinder that only started sinking after maybe 16 years of use, and swapped to hard-floor casters.)

I have liked your video, as a fellow Canadian, I have just fixed my wife's chair in the same way as you describe, it works perfectly and just saved me a butt load of money on a new chair, as she loves her current chair and has had it for 7 years. This is an awesome fix has just extended the life of her chair to probably at least another seven years or probably longer. I made a slight change in that I went into Rona's (A hardware store for, all you non Canadians) and spent $6.00 on a galvanized steel equivalent of the part you suggested, for even greater longevity for the chair. Thanks again.

Yes, you're right. I also don't have a need to adjust the height of my chair any more now that I have it set at the level I like, and I'm the only one that uses it anyways. Glad my video was of some help to you. :)

Question I too am tall is the 5-1/4 the normal max height of the piston. If yes will have the PVC cut to that length.. and thank you for a great video.. always good to save money these days or any ole day.. :-) thanks again....Mystic... waiting..
@Mysticsword7 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on the particular chair model and piston used. I'd suggest to first let the piston / shaft fully lengthen (whatever lever on your chair you would use to raise or lower the height, but don't be sitting in it at the time, and then use that lever to set your chair to full height). After that you can measure the length from the wheelbase to where it meets the chair would meet it, then you can have a PVC tube cut to that length (or slightly shorter) and hopefully that should work for your particular chair.
@M4KERB6 жыл бұрын
i don't care about adjusting it but as soon as you do this, you lose the compression support so its just basically like sitting on a stool.

@Mysticsword8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've gone through a few chairs like this over the years and it's quite expensive to replace a chair just because the pneumatic-piston is wearing out which causes the chair to sometimes sink. So I figured there's got to be a do-it-myself way to "fix" a chair with such a problem, and this is what I came up with. Maybe the idea can also save some other people some money if they try this method. Cheers! :)

Hey, I'm really happy to see your comment and that my idea I show in this video has been of help to some people. I'm a fairly big guy myself, and I've been using this fix without any problems on my own chair for over a couple of years. It's saved me hassle and expense too. :)

Fantastically simple fix that only cost $0.72 at Lowes! The hardest part was finding the coupling which was misplaced in the store. Really appreciate the detailed photo. There’s a WD-40 “fix” out there but it failed right away. Thank you for sharing this!!

Nice fix! Many thanks for posting this. One note for taller folk: the poly insert coupling (as noted in the tutorial) is 3.5 inches. That probably isn't long enough for you to sit as high as you might like, so go with the PVC suggestion. I cut the PVC to about 4.5 inches. Worked very well. Thanks again!

Just fixed my sinking office chair by doing exactly as you instructed. I couldn't get a Poly Insert Coupling from our local B&Q so I purchased a 1 and a 1/2" Trap Height Adjuster for the pricely sum of £2.54p, and it did the job. I didn't even have to cut it. It fitted perfectly at the chairs maximum height which is where I have it set to anyway. So "Job's a good un" as they say over here in the UK. So chuffed I watched this video. So is the wife, for not having to buy a new chair. So 5 Stars. Thank you.

Thank you for this video! I was planning on buying a chair I didnt want due to it just being cheap because my current chair keeps sinking on me... then my wife mentioned "...there must be some way to fix that..." and sure enough the first video that popped up is yours... dang that was an easy fix! It cost me $1.50 in parts, only because I had them cut two different lengths of PVC for me to try (3.5" and 4"). The 4" worked best for my chair... and I was able to keep the post cover on because the PVC pipe fit inside of it nicely. 👍 Thanks again!

Now that is using the old noggin! My old noggin is a little rusty, so thanks for the kick-start! In 2011 I purchased two office chairs, Endsleigh Executive Big Tall Chair #246-219/743-577, (one brown leather & one black leather) as a gift for my Father - my Dad chose the brown chair. I kept the black chair, which was a replacement chair for a prior office chair that suffered the same fate - sinking like low tide. In 2015, I learned that my Father's chair's gas cylinder sunk and both chairs were peeling/flaking - "fake leather" - and making a mess in the room. I had one chair reupholstered in marine nylon in the color peacock green, for a very fair price. The brown chair is in the garage with a sheet as a cover to prevent the "faux-leather" from sticking to your body and clothes. The peacock green chair just collapsed today! I will look through my irrigation repair supplies, but most likely I will purchase the Poly Insert Coupling. If the repair works for me, I just may get the brown chair reupholstered in a color (?).

Thank you! Mine cost a whopping $2.97! Bought a 1-1/4" Sch 40 x 2' section of PVC at Home Depot and cut it to 4 1/2". The 1-1/4" inside I.D. slid over the cylinder but was small enough to fit inside the original black cylinder covers. So it looks like it did originally, just doesn't sink anymore!

Thank you for explaining how this system works and how can it be repaired. I did some slight modifications. I used 4” long copper tube 1/2”, commonly used for water lines. Advantages over your system? 1/2” higher chair, zero cost to me as I have a plenty of 1/2” water copper pipes... Nonetheless - no matter what I came with, it is your idea, and I thank you for that. Good day, smart fellow!

Thank you for your video. I just did this with a PVC pipe (2") and I misjudged the length of pipe I needed. I forgot to consider the play when you sit down that's present in a chair with working hydraulics, so I made the pipe too long. Fortunately, a neighbor is helping me and we can just cut it a little bit shorter, but I thought I'd mention it here, in case others are measuring the chair at its optimal height without taking that into consideration.

3.5" was perfect for mine. I used 1 1/4" Schedule 40 PVC. I kid you not, it took me about 3 mins to cut the PVC with a hacksaw and put it in place. Worked like a charm and I think it will for a long time! Thank you! (note: your grey looks a little more stylish than my white.. lol)
