I have done this many times. A grooved basket does not mean you need a new basket. Usually a basket will blow apart if its in real bad shape of course causing a major mess but I have de-grooved a basket and clutch hub a few times before dumping the big money or finding a better one. I have even filed the ends of the fiber discs in a bind. Not everyone has the money for the parts at the time. Good job!

gabe the savage noob yeah ive done it too... a littke difference would be dat dere would be a bit more vibrations dan before
@triden5511 жыл бұрын
They were pretty deep. The aluminium basket is soft and once you start filing and increasing the clearances, it will wear even fast. It's just a temporary fix until you can buy a new basket & hub, but it has held up for me..although I haven't riden as much as I'd like this last year.

the clutch on my farm bike was slipping so I did the same thing plus added a washer to each spring retaining bolt, it has made the clutch feel like new.

Ever use a ProX hub , it has small oil passage holes throughout the hub much better than stock. Not to expensive either!

Done this to my 1996 YZ250 today, but I didn't file the grooves too much... But I also put all new clutch plates in
@bill45colt9 жыл бұрын
unless you can cut the same amount from each piece, you wont have equal load on the plates as you release clutch. Wear and strain on internal parts will be much greater. However, this is a good stop gap until you can afford a new basket. Laying motorcycle on its side, out in the yard, id not approve of but its your motorcycle!!
@danb.33976 жыл бұрын
If you don't cut exactly the same amount it just means that the discs will move until they hit the basket and that some of the stubs on the disc may not touch in some places so the load may be uneven but unless you're racing it shouldn't be of any great concern. Because it's sheer load you can do this until there is not enough basket left and the tangs crack which would take a loooong time. Just make sure the tangs are smooth for clutch release. Yes, I'm simplifying the issue because I don't want to bore you.

i just got a bike has the exact same problem and i knew it was a clutch problem just not sure what it was. Thanks

Great video, all the symptoms you described fit exactly what has been happening with my bike... When you say that you oiled the components before putting them back on, are you just using the transmission oil you put in your bike?
@dimitriszervos622810 жыл бұрын
yeahh the transmission will do its job

Thanks Triden, this is a great video and explanation. I hoped it would help me understand why I cannot shift upward into neutral when the bike is stopped. Like when I pull into my garage. Still in 1st, with clutch lever pulled, it seems "locked" into 1st. But if I hit the kill switch, it slides right into neutral. I replaced the clutch plates & springs but no change.

Change your oil more often and put the right oil in. Sounds like once your engine oil warms up it’s fine.

I have a 2006 Honda crf250r and I'm new to it coming off a crf100f (both 4 strokes) and I've stalled my clutch a good amount of times, but now sometimes everytime I shift the clutch seems to get jammed and slow down the bike and over rev its self a little between two gears, I'm woundering if this is something major or minor that is wrong with my clutch, I think the clutch might be dragging but I'm not sure, please help

When I go to dump the clutch it sounds like its not totally disengaging could it be the cable just needs adjusting or I need a new clutch?

Terry Spence I would adjust it first, if not replace it.

Terry Spence Had exactly the same problem on my YZ250 and sent it back to the dealer....turns out the oil inside was really old. They just drained it, put new oil in and let it run for a minute and problem was fixed. Might wanna try that first.

i just bought a honda cr125 from 1998 but the clutch grabs realy late, only the last 20% of the clutch lever when letting it go. does anyone knows what i have to do? i have already got the clutch cable very lose, it seems that it has to get even more lose, please help.
@D34THAWAITSU11 жыл бұрын
You should have free play in the clutch lever, when you let it out, you should be able to wiggle the lever some. If you can do that and it still does not fix the problem, you can try stiffer clutch springs, or its just time for some new clutch components. Hope this helped.
