Thanks for the quick fixes for the dog spots! I too have a small dog, mixed breed rescue. Where do your Westies do their business during the winter when there is snow on the ground? My guy is too short to walk when there is any significant snow so I shovel an area in my backyard for him. That area takes a beating and needs a lot of love in the springtime to get it back into shape.

I had a tool similar to that made 25 years ago when I had a pack of beagles. It took out hockey puck size sod and replaces it with pieces from the other side of the yard. Some times if they were bigger I would cut around the edge of the spot and rotate it 180 degrees 4 or 5 times and replace the center. This would blend it in to the existing lawn and it would nearly disappear. Seems like the cut and turn resumed the growth in the sod. Sometimes a piece of sod to cut cut plugs was the order of the day.

I live in PA. We dethatched and overseeded with perennial ryegrass last fall. Lawn was breathtaking in the spring! Despite watering during dry spells, there is one grass in the original mix that has turned brown like straw. There are also thatching areas of brown I have been trying to control. Of the common cool grass combinations, which grass is the brown and straw-like one throughout the lawn ( from original lawn prior to our purchase)? How do I control/ prevent thatch? We mow as you have instructed keeping grass 3-4 inches tall. We bag our clippings for now.
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
There's no way for me to know which one turned brown unfortunately. You can dethatch in fall with a machine you rent or buy a corded one like I have for around $120 and they work really well.

Question: what is the difference between D thatching and scarfire?? And why do different companies use the 2 term interchangeably with the implements that go on there equipment? For example: on your Electra they sell a scarfire cassette but it looks similar to green works detacher. Could you please explain the difference and the differences between all the implementations as well as why they have different names? Or a video would be great. Thanks! Love your channel and I’m definitely going to renovate my mine

Do I need to water the area every day until the grass grows or do I need to add more seeds?

We have 2 dogs with a total weight over 300 lbs. They pee buckets a day. Living in Alberta we have snow on the ground 6 months out of the year so it really builds up. When our yard thawed out this spring we literally lost half of our back yard to dog pee. We’ve been doing as you showed and we’re back to about 75-80 percent. But they are killing it as fast as we can grow it and we water all the time trying to flush the soil. Our soil literally bubbles when we water it in the bad spots. Next year will probably be sod.

I seen those type of dry spots that recently appeared in my lawn. I wondered what was causing that. I also have a lawn against the curb by the street. A number of people that pass by walking their dogs, allow them to sniff, lift up their leg and urinate on the lawn. I didnt realize that was the cause of the same type of spots you have.
@DanishKhan-xm6bb3 жыл бұрын

Plugs work great, however I’ve found teaching my dog to use the toilet was the best method of preventing burns 🤘
@JamieHarveyJr3 жыл бұрын
The only thing that minimized it for me was to run a low nitrogen program in the back yard. I started with only 1lb of Nitogen per season and the dog spots still ‘greened up’ a little. 1.5lbs per season was my sweet spot. The rest of the lawn usually gets 4lbs of Nitrogen per season, for comparison.
@briannanney1013 жыл бұрын
I do the same, and it's effective. Along with switching to bio-solids in the backyard dog area.

The best preventative thing you can do is use your OWN yard as a toilet!! My neighbors love to use my grass as their dogs toilet. It's frustrating after I've put in a lot of hard work to get my grass looking like a golf course

I’ve got centipede, I’ve never had problems with dog pee. The grass just grows greener in that spot
@JamieHarveyJr3 жыл бұрын
I believe a lawn low in nitrogen will generally be greener from the urea. If it has adequate nitrogen or high nitrogen levels it tends to yellow. It’s similar to dropping fertilizer on the lawn and burning it, If I’m not mistaken.
@greattrainadventure85233 жыл бұрын
@@JamieHarveyJr Yes it’s similar. But it’s like that for all the warm season lawns I’ve seen. They are just so resilient. (Apart from zoysia)

the plug method works well if you have a fence line and you can most the fence enough to pull a plug from right under it. over time you won't have to whip that section of fence, win win. DOG urine is concentrated PH imbalance, all you have to do is balance that spots PH again, no seeding required and you can eliminate the damage in the first place by sprinkling 1 of the 6 PH soil balances on it. urine is high acid, and i forgot which type you need to buy but it's the base to the acid imbalance so it's an alkali, can't recall if it's limestone or gypsum off the top of my head.

Fun fact: it's the lactic acid that burns the lawn, not the salts. Lactic acid acts similar to glyphosate, which is why you want to water immediately to dilute it. I learned that one from Matt
@djayt12153 жыл бұрын
If you catch it early, a water can mixed with humic, and a surfactant, water deeply. Works for rabbit damage to
@backpacker34213 жыл бұрын
To help minimize the dog spots to begin with, regular humic acid sprayed down will help keep a good biome to quickly break down the offending urine.

My solution is to use minimum apps of bio-solid fertilizer instead of regular salt chemical based fertilizer. Now my 85 lb lab doesn't burn nearly as much grass.
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
And your phos levels are likely off the chart so be careful with that
@briannanney1013 жыл бұрын
@@ryanknorrlawncare Nope, phos is 0.44, way below the optimal level of 5-11. Minimum apps also means applying minimum levels of Phos. I chose to apply less fert in the backyard over following my dog with water cans and plugging dead spots. An 85lb dog can burn 1 square food with 1 morning piss.
