Very nice car! I have a very similar Audi 80 sitting in my Garage. It is a grey metallic one with the 2.3 litre 5-cylinder engine. It has nearly 300'000 kilometers on the clock as it was my first car when I bought it, 12 years ago. I do not use it very often as I also have a station wagon but I just can't sell it… It is such a good and reliable car! I picked up my girlfriend for the first time with it, she is my wife now. We sat in it at our marriage and I even drove her to the hospital as she went into labor. I think I'll Keep it. Maybe my kids drive it one day!

Fixed many of these, for many years. Fit a new a rotor/ dizzy cap and leads... the car will thank you for it! This engine was also subject to a recall that was often overlooked. A piece of silver foil used to be attach the the coil king lead. This would short out. If it’s there remove it :) Great cars!

I spent all my childhood in a white Audi 80 B3 1.8s as it was our only car. It once ran without engine oil in the dipstick for 100km, got flooded, got hailed on, crashed multiple times but never left my family stranded on the road. We had it for about 20 years (done 400000km) until my father decided to sell it. I even first learned to drive on it on a private road. I'm 26 years old now and want to buy one because I miss the good old days and love the way it looks.

The very first car I ever purchased was a 1998 Audi 80. I purchased it in 1990 with approximately 10,000 miles on it. It was fairly reliable for the first year or so but things just kept breaking on that car. I was at the dealership getting it repaired so often that they knew me by name. It was fun while it lasted. However after 20+ years of owning other VW products, I can honestly say I would never own another VW are Audi ever again.

Great video Andrew. Really enjoyed it as my dad had an Audi 80 1.8E as a company car many, many years ago. It was the first car we had that went over 100k. I didn't realise the engine was the same in the Golf mk3 Driver that I later had until you mentioned it in the video! I remember wishing he'd been able to get the 1.8S (I think it was) with the split-rims and larger spoiler. Seemed such a solid car - can't recall the last time I saw one. What size is the engine? We only got the 2.0 four in Australia initially in the 80. Our initial car was the 90 with 5 cylinder and then we got the 2.0, 2.3 and 2.8 - all great cars and designated as the 80

Great video! When i was twelve, my dad had a 92 80 TD saloon for about a year before upgrading to the much superior ( and more importantly faster!) 5 cylinder 2.5 TDI 100 Avant (in Tornado Red!). I must say i loved the interior of the 80 though - miles better than other equivilent cars of that era. (Especially compared to the Cavalier we borrowed for a weekend to test-drive prior to getting the 80!). Good memories and made such an impression I've only bought VAG cars since i got my license!

Nice memories there Julian!I too had my love of VAG based on cars from that era. Would I feel the same now? Not sure, they are still superior in so many ways but a lot less exclusive than they were back then. Inevitable I suppose, as incredible cars like this 80 and subequent A4 laid the foundations for Audi's massive growth in 90s and early 00s

Hi Richard, it's funny but when the in-car bit was being filmed I knew the emotion of finally getting the car running was going to be evident. I've done a lot of things with cars in the 25 years since I started tinkering with them but easily the most satisfying is working out faults slowly and methodically and homing in on the errant part and replacing it. This is particularly good on older cars due to their simplicity as diagnostics don't give you the whole story so some effort is needed and the parts are often peanuts - downside is sometimes the parts have been made obsolete as was the case here. Only exception is Pierburg 2E2/2E3 carburettors where I wave the white flag!

@volkswizard4 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, thanks for your continued support. I forgot you were MK based, thanks for the offer of help, are you any good at filming?😉I don't think high esteem had much to do with it to be honest, more like that I am a trade buyer so no comeback and I'm prepared to take on a project. This car isn't as perfect as it looks, I'll reveal why in the next episode which is a definite seeing as the car has gone down so well. Maybe it will make it to Stanford Hall 2020 and you can see it in the metal?
@darrencottrell55414 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I like to think I can take a good photograph, as per my photo montages (and partial videos) on my channel, but then others may well disagree... 😊 Hoping to make Stanford Hall again, I've spinal surgery mid-February, so hoping I will be fit and able by then, God-willing. Look forward to episode two and hopefully seeing you (and said vehicle) at the show.
@garybocking45414 жыл бұрын
Andrew, not sure if you know, but you can increase the screen size of vcds/vag-com to fill your lap top screen in the settings.
This thing will last a long time if it is maintained properly. I had a Audi 80 2.0 ABT engine. ABT engines are very reliable and not that easy to get sized up even if it is deliberately done. Downside is valve guide seals need to be changed after 100k miles, because they tend to get very bad and usually if it is a over 30 year old vehicle the rubber seal dose not function as it is supposed to work.

Hmmm. I’m trying to recall a US spec Audi 80 I repaired and sold. It was either a 91 or 92 5-cylinder automatic. The fuel pump was not in-tank but was under the right side. I know because I replaced it with a similar unit from a VW Jetta. I hated having to use that expensive Audi Pentosin brake fluid when I did a brake job on it. Finding a car this old in that kind of condition must be a very special experience. A car that sits so much should either have a nearly empty fuel tank or use stabilizer! Ethanol kills petrol quickly. You honestly should have just drained the tank completely not knowing the age of the petrol and then filled up fresh.

I had an Audi 80 / 115KM ABK 1992 silver - electric windows, electric mirrors, electric sunroof, outdoor air thermometer, additional clocks - a very solid car, I was very happy with its use

Do you advise me to buy an audi 1992 Audi 80? Is it a strong car that doesn’t need garage regularly?

bought one of these off local VW dealer as a "trade car" and ran it for 3 years with no issues.... very solid build and galvanised so no rust...reluctantly sold it as we needed a bigger car for a growing family but fond memories and tbh... Audi befire the accountants got involved and substance above style back in those days... quiet money rather than shouty flash the cash

It's a great car much like a lot of 80s German metal. Sadly someone asked the question "why do we make a car that can last for ever for a first owner who only cares about the first 3 years" and that was it...

Nice. I have a 95 2L 80E Sport SE. Pretty rare in the UK now, (not valuable at all though), and it's easily the best car I've had. Constantly replacing small front suspension bits and it doesn't like sitting in traffic at all, but it drives perfectly and it's really practical too.

Had one of these, 60k miles on the clock, engine decided to destroy itself. It's a thirsty car, but that's the only downside I could think of. It's quiet, comfortable, and the suspension was amazing.

This is quality Andrew, genuinely from an era where Audi really stood for quality......I still love VAGs but I dont think they make them quite like this anymore! Please please please just get it cleaned up all A1 and keep it....deserves to go into cherished retirement with someone fastidious such as yourself 👍👍 Although not particularly quick by today's standards part of me would still love a 2.0 16v Sport of this era, were lovely lovely things

Have you been in a golf r or Audi rs6? They have quality, just have to pay for the luxury feeling, more quality you want the more it cost. Rs6 is what £75,000! Madness if you ask me.

@@andrewwright. yeah I've had a few VAGs over the years, nothing quite so fancy but have had 2 x Mk7 Golf GTDs and a 6C Polo GTi. Dont get me wrong, compared to many other brands VAG make a quality product, but is IMHO definitely the case where things are no longer over engineered just because...rather the engineering all comes down to cost. And totally agree....would I spend close to 100k on an Audi however nice it was ....probably not....if I ever had that sort of money!👍😁

You really don't see those cars in uk? They're very popular in Poland as a first car because they are cheap to buy and maintain.
@volkswizard4 жыл бұрын
Seriously we don't! A think a lot will have been crushed when the goverment ran a scrappage scheme for cars over 10 years old a few years ago. The popularity of new car finance in the UK means the age of cars on our roads as decreased significantly.

Love that you mentioned about being in to mountain bikes. What did you have? Same story with me!!

Hi Matthew. I started riding in 1991 on some junk. I went to uni in London in Sep 1991 by train with a big rucksack and a Trek 800 hybrid bike. I soon swapped this for a Trek 830, then a few Konas. We had a little club going where we'd ride (seemingly illegally) at the Spaniards bit of Hampstead Heath which had some amazing jumps. In the summer of 1992 I spent 3 months as a cycle courier on a GT Zaskar (still on knobblies). I fitted Rock Shox to it and then I think I swapped that for a Diamond Back XTR in an autumn sale (which is the one I remember stripping) and raced that at Bob's Bash nearly Henley in Arden coming 19 of 144 after a summer of being a courier but still smoking cigarettes every so often. I like aluminium so had a Marin Indian Fire Trail after that but that was stolen so paid extra to upgrade via insurance to a Klein Attitude Comp in 2000 which I still own (needs restoring). Had a few Treks and Konas after that, all rigid tail. Had a moderate accident in 2012 ish off roading so bought a Cannondale cross bike and after another MTB theft undoubtedly due to someone seeing the bike while viewing my house which was for sale (3rd one) I bought a carbon GT cross which is my only bike now but I will revisit another MTB soon now I live in the country. I did talk about starting a bike shop with my Uni friend but that morphed into cars by myself. However we still ride together and I fix and service his Golf and I often cycle to collect cars wherever possible so a happy mix of bikes and cars. Off for a ride now actually....:)

volkswizard well that‘a a great history of bikes. Unfortunately I didn’t have such an eclectic mix of bike brands. The usual halfords home brands in the 90s which led to my first entry level bike which was a Marin Hawk Hill. Owning several other bikes over the years, Trek, Scott etc but I’ve gone full circle and now own a collection room of titanium Marin FRS and hard tails (nostalgia)!..... Some NOS and a few restoration projects. Oh and a NOS 1991 Klein attitude in the famous backfire colour way. I’ve just got myself a golf gti anniversary from 96 with a fraction over 10k on the clock. It would be great to share this on your KZbin channel in the summer...

I had one of those back in 2002-2003 in black. K--- FKU. I loved that registration plate ! I think it was the entry level model though. 90bhp from single-point injection, I think. Felt solid. Had a leccy steel sunroof but manual windows.

Great car, but can't understand why you didn't put fresh fuel in when you did the pump.
@volkswizard4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, do you mean why didn't I drain it? I may still do that but I did put fresh fuel in right after the video ended at that was the driving footage was on the way to the petrol station. It's much easier to dilute bad fuel with good than it is to drain half a tank out. It's got around 2/3 of a tank now and drives OK if not perfectly. I don't think the engine is all that sensitive to fuel quality like a modern one so I will run this down, check pump isn't blocked again and then fill up with new fuel.
