Holy crap finally a video that matches my exact problem. Getting this hub nut off is a nightmare everything else i can handle
@ronstickle46945 жыл бұрын
i hope you see this as this is a video from 2012 but i want to thank you! All the service videos show disassembly from clean newer washers not old and corroded like yours and mine from the real world. I carefully cut and chiseled the nut away and had to do the same from what was left of the hub then i made a spanner wrench to fit the new nut by tracing the outline of the new nut on a piece of flat steel cut out with a hole saw then filed the rest of the shape. then tightened it put it all together and works like new. I love these simple machines no computers easy to fix! THANKS!!!

I had the same issue! and had the same difficulties with hub nut. I used a grinder to weaken the metal around the hub nut and top piece of broken hub .With a few hits with a hammer it all came off. For someone else attempting this, it would be a great idea to plug drain hole inside plastic liner with a paper towel to avoid loose metal from entering pump . Great video!

I just did same job. You said it right - getting the transmission free is hell. I speculate the oxiclean my wife is using contributed to the corrosion. told her to stop using.

I managed to get the old nut off after 12 years of it being in the washer. Here is how I did it. First some background. I am 62 years old and when I was in my 20ies, I was an auto mechanic. The way I got it off was using a 1-11/16 deep wall socket and my pneumatic impact wrench. I fired up the compressor and when it reached 100psi, I connected my CP impact wrench and took off the nut, in tack, after 3 seconds. I will admit I tried getting it off using hand tools but got tired of hitting my knuckles. I realize that most of you do not have this equipment, but if you do, it works. And yes I knew that it did have left handed thread. Also, when you remove the control cover there are the wiring diagrams and instructions on how to remove this cast Aluminum part. I wrote GE and blasted them for their poor engineering. The part should have been made of enameled steel, like the old washer tubs used to be made of. It would have never deteriorated if it were made of that. I just feel that GE build planned failures into their appliances so they can sell more product.

Dang, I have a 2020 washer where the same thing happened to it. I don’t know how it rotted so bad in 4 years but the tub grenaded itself. Calling GE and hoping they warranty the tub

Please help! How do I break the nut?
@emaguerra198 ай бұрын
Right now I am struggling with the rotten nut. already tried using a pipe wrench: didnt work and felt it was gonna damage the exagon corners. Made my own wrench by welding two steel plates 2" x 3/16" that I carved each with half the exagon: fits perfect, but!, the nut is so rotten that it's starting to deform instead of loosening. So, as said here, next step: break the nut.

Just letting everyone know that you need to spin the hub nut clockwise, not counter clockwise. You may not have to break the nut if you just spin it the right way.

Richard Curtin , you give it a try on a rotted nut, and work within that small space! Also I’m about to cut the nut off with a dremmel!

That's what I did. I used a rotary tool, with metal cutting blades. It got it off.

I used oscillating tool with cutting attachment. still took a lot of work.

Right He didn't have to do all that If he first knew what he was doing You have to take the whole top panel off to easily access the tub and use the right spanner wrench to remove the bolt clockwise

Did you figure out the name of the deteriorating metal part?
@ComputerGuyAndy3 ай бұрын
@@nonsagashus_The_Gamecat Its called a "hub" but it's impossible to buy new unless you happen to find a mom-and-pop repair shop that happens to have one sitting on the shelf for the past 15 years. Even if you did find it the cost is outrageous at over $400. The part comes with the nut that locks it down and an entire brand new, stainless steel drum play you undoubtedly do not need. If you happen to find one used it's going to be in the same shape that yours is now or close enough to it not to make it worthwhile. I wish I had better news.

I was able to get my hub nut off after a lot of strength and WD40 and almost ruining the new spanner wrench now i can't get the inner hub off though! The small broken part of the cast iron won't come off, but i can remove the whole tub. i can't replace the inner mounting hub until i get it off

that hub is not cast iron but cast metal - junk. The newer GE designs are not worth fixing - pure JUNK. The new hub will never come of the spin shaft - have to break it. new part is over $300 as they don't sell the hub by itself. don't waste your time TRYING to fix them - better yet DON'T buy GE

Why does GE continue to make this part out of the same material year after years when they must know that today's detergents are very, very corrosive towards this aluminum alloy crap metal they are using? I've had two different machines have the same failure! The first lasted 15 years (not too bad) The second only five years........They want 500.00 some odd dollars for the part as the tub flange itself is not available separately on the model that has the stainless tub! Screwed by GE once again!
