Thanks for this video. "Just pull out the tub," other videos said. Yeah, right! I would've guessed the inner tub was welded to the shaft with it not budging the way it was, lol. Just used your C clamp method, and out it came. Having a second person to put the clamp setup together was essential as I would've needed 3 hands to balance everything. Thanks for taking the time to film this!

Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together. Really appreciated. I was really stumped with getting the drum off; suddenly it was easy using your method of two large C-clamps and a small metal bar. I would have never thought of it, and my wife would have had to start using a washboard.

I just wanted to say thank you! I tried everything on the internet, and your method was the only one that worked. This along with changing the capacitor (if your clothes tangle, and start banging, it might be because the capacitor is bad and the agitator only goes in one direction) fixed my washer. Your video was a godsend!

I can't thank you enough for this video. I couldn't get the inner tub to separate and I was starting to lose hope. The key to the method described by the OP is to use a small, straight, heavy piece of metal, because it isn't easy holding the spanner wrench up while balancing a piece of metal on top of a 1/2 drive shaft while trying to attach the 2 clamps. In the end once I managed to get everything set-up it only took 3mins for the two tubs to separate. THANKS AGAIN :)

Thanks. I had the same problem with an old 1998 washer and your method worked great. I did have an old wheel puller that I used to pull off the tub, but your improvised wheel puller would work for anyone who has some basic clamps. Great video.

Great help--we tried lots of things but ended up using a gear puller/pulley and heard a lot of popping while we cranked it around. Then finally it let loose including the drive block. We hammered the drive block out of the tub afterwards also and cleaned it up with a steel brush. Worse part of the job. When we got to the plastic tub, since I was replacing the tub seal, I put a screw driver in at the bottom and separated it from the shaft. The plastic tub pulled right up. Thank you--Thank you for your help! Great idea and it worked!

On our 90 Series Kenmore, I got to thinking about the gunk inside there behind the drive block. It's not much in the line of rust, more along the line of gunked up detergent, fabric softener and and general boodie funk. So instead of using a rust penetrant, like every one seems to go for right off, I sprayed around the block with Super Clean and let it sit while I figured out how in the world I'd be able to get the spanner nut off with no spanner. Channel locks got it fairly easy without messing anything up. I sprayed more Super Clean around the block while I thought a little bit more about how to pull the nut with no spanner. I used a smaller 3-arm puller and managed to get the block up to where the center post started spinning. Sprayed in a bit more Super Clean, tapped around a little bit and shortly I was able to pull the tub out after a few good firm yanks. I sure wish that my tub looked as clean as your "Before" view looked. It's was so bad that even part of the drive block was eaten away. Not broken, I didn't see any sign of pieces of metal, but about a third of the lower block was missing and the gap filled with powdered gunk. The good thing is that the Super Clean (at 5:1 mix that I generally use around the garage) seems to be cutting into the tub build up fairly decently. I'll see how that works out as I clean everything up. Thanks for posting this. Even though I wasn't able to do it your way, I saw enough to be able to figure it out.

This was a lifesaver on my 25-year old Kenmore from which the basket had never been removed. I tried the 3-jaw puller method and succeeded only in buggering the threads in the agitator (which I fortunately was able to chase using the agitator bolt). This did the trick right quick.

Hey Brother thanks for making this video you saved my ass today. My washer was stinking and there was a lot of black stuff coming off the washer when I washed a load of clothes so I decided to do this but I ran into the same problem you did I could not get the drum off but thanks to your video I finally got it off I did the same thing you did so I can't thank you enough. I clean the tub and it looked brand new and I cleaned the outside of the drum it took me a total of 7 hours my wash machine is like brand-new now. Like I said thank you you got me out of a bind you and your family have a great evening.

Thanks for the idea! Our old whirlpool was leaking, so I ordered a new seal and the spanner wrench. Wrench worked great, but the tub wouldn't budge. I sprayed PB blaster on it and let it sit overnight, pounded it with a rubber mallet then a 4# beater, heated it with a propane torch, but nothing worked. Had one long clamp but had to go buy another one for this (I can always use another good tool, though). Needed my wife for a second set of hands. Trying to get the bar (used a 1 1/4" square tube I had laying around since the receiver hitch with a ball on it was not balancing well) to stay put when setting up the first clamp was a hassle, but when my wife held it in place while I applied the clamps made it easier. Man, the sound of that 'thump' when the first clamp pulled it up on the first (and all the rest) of the adjustments made me smile big time! Ours tubs were caked with lime and soap scum. To the point that I finally got out my 4" angle grinder with a wire wheel and just buzzed it all right off the porcelain inner tub. (No, it didn't scratch or gall it. The porcelain is tough stuff) If anyone can't get their tub out, this is the way to go. Now, getting those suspension springs on is another story! And like someone else said, all those how-to videos showing those guys just lifting the tub out after they get the agitator off is really misleading. Old washers aren't like the fairy tale videos! Thanks again for this video! BIG HELP!!

Ditto, same here, used your initial idea, but busted out the 3 jaw pullers in my case. Just ran the spanner nut in enough to grab 3-4 threads, but not so tight that it started spreading the thingy. It was coming off so easy, I thought it was the pullers slipping. But off it came and before that, I spent much time trying to just pull it off like some youtube vids showed. Thank you for sparking my memory about using pullers

You Saved ME thanks! But I used a slightly different tool method. I went to autozone and free rented their 3 claw puller. Hand screwed the spline nut back on and hooked the claws to it and the puller center screw on the shaft. It pulled off but it was very tight, pulled all the way up with the puller, it was stuck with a lot of gunk and come rust and corrosion. Oven cleaner sprayed on and soaked for a bit works best for cleaning all the gunk off. Only $1 a can at the dollar tree! I think the best thing to do is just clean the metal surfaces and spray paint the mating surfaces and or apply vaseline. Obviously the factory didn't paint the paw. When my old whirlpool finally bites the dust, I'm going to really read reviews before I buy to make sure it's RELIABLE. As I've seen repair companies saying much of the new stuff breaks down severely sometimes terminally and doesn't last. It would be nice to possibly use less water when washing with a new machine but only if it washes well and doesn't fail. Take care

Thanks, this worked well. A small improvement is to use a ratcheting tie down strap wrapped around both arms of the wrench and rigid object so that it keeps everything stabilized while you tighten down the clamps. Probably the easiest way is to use a gear puller if it's available. I think this video is much better than using a car jack to jack against the inside lip of the tub which could end up warping it and ruining the whole thing.

I went to harbor freight tools and got a six inch 3-arm gear puller. You need to put the spanner nut back on upside down and turn the spanned nut 4 to 5 turns (do not tighten it) - then use the gear puller 3 arms to hold onto the spanner nut while turning the gear puller shaft against the washer center shaft. This worked for me on a 35 year old Kenmore washer.

You saved us. I bought a used 22 year old Kenmore washer that was sold to me "like new". Why? Because I was stupid and bought a HE Speed Queen that sucks!!!! (Never buy a TR5003) It is awful. Sure, it has a 3 year warranty....but it's the worst washer I've used in my 53 years of doing literally thousands upon thousands of loads of laundry. I endured it for six months and decided to buy something old since the new ones don't do the job anymore. The outside of the old Kenmore and even the inner ring appeared to be "like new". The salesman cleaned it up beautifully. But.....Surprise surprise....at home when I could look "under the hood" I knew there'd be no way I'd be washing clothes in that grimy disgusting tub that would be nothing but skin cell and dirt soup soaking into each batch of laundry. So, the quest began to take that spanner nut off (bought the proper wrench)....and once that was accomplished we were stuck. I thought we were going to have to throw in the towel....but this method worked beautifully. We had the tow hitch and one clamp...so we bought one more. I held the hitch and wrench in place for my husband while he placed the clamps. It was pretty simple. Twisting those C clamps to hear the tub pop free several times until we could lift it out was music to the ears. My husband understood the method from the video just fine. I'm not that bright....but I caught on.... Thank you for cluing in the clueless and saving the day. To all who try this...line your tub with a blanket or some towels....just in case you accidentally drop the hitch or C-clamps. They're so heavy and you don't want to ruin the deal by chipping your tub. AND GET ANOTHER PERSON to stabilize the contraption before attempting this. It is easy...but I think almost impossible with just two hands.

Tip: If you don't have a spanner tool, you CAN use a socket and tap it off with a hammer hitting each notch till it loosens. Then use the socket again and tap gently both sides of the slot of the drive block to loosen the rust(That's where the rust welds it) and the tub should come out. Worked like a charm for me with not that much effort.

Great video! This one is more like real life situations. Like a few others I used a pulley/gear puller. It is much easier with just two hands and worth borrowing or renting from an auto parts store. Also used an old credit card (plastic putty knife) to scrape the gunk from the outer tub. Thought there was less chance of scratching and help for future gunk buildup. Again great video!👍✌

Man! That’s it!! That’s my problem, alright. I kept thinking the guy in the repair video I watched forgot to mention something, but... nope. Our washer is also gunky and smelly, so the tub is stuck. Sadly I don’t have c clamps... I should, I wok on cars... so I’ll have to get creative here. But I understand the problem, which will help in figuring out a solution. If anything, the auto parts stores can lend you tools, and I think a large puller will work as well.

My tub was stuck to the drive block I held the tub while I hit spanner wrench tightening way on the hub nut...then it didn't seem it did much... I poured a liquid soap around the drive block...seam between tub and block 2 seconds later soap soaking down....I didn't have penetrating oil..... the tub lifted right out! Cos my tub and drive block were spinning together after I had removed hub nut... couldn't lift tub out. After all that the drive block I just tapped up out from underneath with a hammer.

Thanks for this video. I had success using a 3-jaw gear puller from Advance Auto Parts, AC3110 that has a 3 1/4in reach. I used your flip the spanner wrench method, genius. Even then it took so much force to break the corrosion seal, and then I found the drive block was rusted to the inner tub. After I removed the inner tub I tapped the drive block down and out with a mini sledge and used a wire brush to scrape off the corrosion. The clamps part I tried but didn't work for me because I kept dropping them all over the place (side note: I advise anyone else to put down some towels or something so the tub coating isn't damaged). I tried a piece of 2x4 wood sitting across the spindle and even drilled a 1/2 in. deep hole so the wood could "sit" balanced on the spindle but when I applied the clamps no matter how I tried to balance it the wood would always lean forwards or backwards as I was turning the clamps on the sides.

The number of people who've shown up here celebrating this method really surprises me. It's an incredibly cumbersome and difficult process, most of which this video never shows us. How did he get the clamps on? He doesn't show -- in that tight space, balancing a 40-lb hitch receiver on top of a tiny transmission shaft, and then attaching and tightening C-Clamps is almost impossible without another pair of hands. In fact, nowhere is there a video showing how to do this. And once you get the clamps on and try to tighten them (he never shows that, either), you can end up driving the transmission shaft right into the gear box. Instead: turn the thing on its back, remove the transmission (3 bolts, motor wire harness -- lots of videos on this), and then pound on the drive bolt with a large socket and extension until either the basket drive comes loose from the bolt and comes out, or the drive and bolt both come out. If the basket drive comes out you can lift off the tub and work on removing the bolt from the top and underneath.

From Charles Juedemann, Union, MO, I also had this problem and In my case I used a substantial auto wheel puller and struggled to remove the tub. I finally used a 250ft lb impact driver and that did it, but I was afraid I would break the nut, it didn't and the tub came out. From there on it was easy. HOWEVER my original problem was a violent noise at spin start up. The unanimous suggestion on youtube was this collar. How it could cause a shake or noise I do not know as the collar was firmly seated in the tub with no wear. Time will tell.

Figured out that big C-clamp applied tight (!) above rusted off spot pinched it in place. Made a deep socket contraption from plate with pair of 1/4" thick tabs that mesh with washing machine nut, cut hole in middle of plate for shaft, opposite side I welded about 3" pipe over hole in plate, then welded an impact socket at top of pipe. 2 Quick therma cycles of socket low red & slow cool, then protect eyes and put the impact wrench to it. Was very tight but impact wrench unscrewed it. Hammer didn't quite do it.

Its ok if the tub rusted in the cylinder that the drive block goes in? Is cleaning it with a wire brush good enough or should it be primed and painted before putting it back together? My spin tub is in excellent shape otherwise. Does this area fill with water when you use the washer or is it typically dry? Mine has more rust at the base where the plastic filter attaches due to a leaking tub seal. I'm concerned about getting rust stains on my laundry.

My transmission housing broke at the rivets and all the oil leaked out doing that technique. But the basket broke loose and came off though. Needed to replace transmission anyhow but caution to those who don’t.

I've taken apart several of these machines and wondered how the tiny spin tube ears are able to drive a tub full of water and clothes. I have seen some drive blocks shear in such a way that it appears that the tub is trying to walk upwards. That will eat the ears of the spin tube and eat the corresponding notches on the drive block. The guy who sells me parts told me that the drive block is split for a reason. As you tighten the nut, it squeezes the spin tube at the same time the upper nut pulls the drive block into the bottom of the tub. That is the reason you have to make sure you tighten the top nut really well. Some machines have a little plastic washer with a peg pointing up on one side and another peg pointing down on the other. You will usually find that washer with a loose fitting "C" clip. He told me that those parts really do nothing. I put together a machine without them and found no difference. I thought it was some sort of spacer that kept the agitator from going too far down. Some books/vids recommend that the drive tube be replaced if the notches are worn due to a loose drive block. I feel that if you tighten the nut enough that the drive block will tighten enough around the drive tube that it won't be a problem. A last chance fix would be to JB Weld it onto the tube.

obsolete professor If either the ears on the basket drive are worn down or the spaces on the drive block are enlarged due to ware, they both should be changed out. Either condition allows for play in the basket. During the spin cycle the play in the basket causes a great deal of drag as the motor and coupler and transmission work to spin the clothes dry. Customers will complain about clothes being more wet after spin than they used to be.

My drive block is really crusty--the washer spins (and still seems like there's water in there but only agitates about 2 inches each direction--drive block? Or motor coupler? Thanks!

Here's what finally worked for me in this order: (I just completed the repair and it's working fine) Start with light tapping. More tapping. Liquid Wrench. Increased tapping and more liquid wrench. Banging, liquid wrench and propane torch. Crying. Cussing. Some amount of beer. Finally, what worked was banging down and at a slight angle on the drive shaft itself. I couldn't get it to actually rock back and forth like so many people could. Replaced the drive block and seems to work fine now.

Thanks for this,I'm working on one right now that the tub has been on for 30 years, lol, ill be tackling it this weekend, i work in machine shop and have been around machinery all my life but you can ALWAYS learn something new from someone else,i dont have the spanner and i buy everything i have online since i can get it much cheaper,i was wondering about how much it would cost local?

dntlss I couldn’t find one local, but you could call the hardware stores or an appliance repair place if you’re lucky enough to have one nearby. My guess is $20.

@@DadsGotADeal You were right on the money,i found one this morning local and it was 20. Ive decided after taking everything apart to buy a new washer tub support assembly (the thing that looks like a triangle where everything rides on) and basket drive assembly, the stuff looks really bad that came out of there and i mean bad, this washer has been excellent for the last 3 decades so i dont mind spending some money on it,there is a bearing kit one can buy for the support assembly but its a pain to install and mine is badly rusted, some of the black stuff that came out of that shaft would put Chernobyl to shame.

I tried this method. Unfortunately ended up ruining my transmission. Wasn't able to remove the tub either. My Drive shaft was "fused" with gunk to the drive block. So the clamps ended up forcing the center of the drive shaft into the transmission.

@@DadsGotADeal Thanks! I got a tool just like yours but it was designed with 1 prong, not 4 like yours. My dad had it from being a retired tech for 39 years. We finally got that nut loose today, but I want to get a new tool. My washing machine is over 20+ years old and was used when I got it. The tub seal is starting to leak, it could’ve been prevented had I known the tub to frame stabilizer spring hole rusted thru. I’m basically restoring the whole washer now. Going to have about 6 labor hours into it. Cleaning everything, taking apart pieces, cleaning pieces, lubing rub pads, rust proofing prone parts, going get parts, installing parts etc..

I think you need the 4 fingers that are in the agitator. Some parts guys call them spin dogs.. agitator dogs. The top half of the agitator just seems to sit there or spin with no real force. They are p/n 80040 FSP/Whirlpool. see link: www.walmart.com/ip/WP80040-Whirlpool-OEM-Washer-Washing-Machine-Agitator-Dogs-also-for-Kenmore-285770/173985014?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=9982&adid=22222222227065479472&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=s&wl2=c&wl3=170315323415&wl4=pla-274786814587&wl5=1013804&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=115794506&wl11=online&wl12=173985014&wl13=&veh=sem

the issue i have been having with my washer with my washer is that it will agitate just fine the dual action agitator locks and spins one direction while the bottom half moves back and fourth the issue i have is when it comes to a spin the agitator no longer comes up to speed with the drum so fabric softener no longer dispenses i removed the agitator there is a metal c clamp that is fine then under that there is a plastic ring with 2 notches one side hooks to the metal clamp the other to he drive block well that plastic notch has broken off and i have no idea what that part is called other then that the washer works just fine it also has had a whole new agitator put in it the old one got stained pretty bad and had some cracks so i just replaced it.
