Fix Gravel Driveway with Compact Tractor

How to repair a gravel driveway with a compact tractor after heavy rain. We needed to fix our gravel driveway and were able to do that with our John Deere 4044m and a box blade.
‪@WoodwardAcres‬ we often have to work on our driveway. Our main issue is it is a gravel driveway and our second issue is we are on a steep hill. Nothing really better to DIY fix your gravel driveway than a compact tractor and doing it yourself.

It has been my experience that a land plane is the best for maintaining driveways. Box Blades tend to want to move too much material.

I’ve looked at land planes but thought it takes a bit to get them going and wasn’t sure if my drive was long enough

@@WoodwardAcres I do gravel driveways as a business. Box blades are wonderful tools for the rough grading but the land plane has no peer for finish grading. They "get going" right away and leave the gravel flat as a pool table, are easy to use, and don't need a ton of hp. Should you get one, get scarifiers on it as well for breaking up the potholes, which is necessary to do. If you're doing frequent gravel and grading work, I would also HIGHLY recommend a hydraulic top link. They can make adjustments on the fly for getting the right angle of engagement for the box blade and land plane , but also makes implement changes with your imatch even faster and easier as all implements don't have the same angle of connectivity even though they're quick hitch compatible.

I've got a 5 ft BB on a 3038E to maintain a full mile gravel drive. It is a great tool. I think you could use a bit larger one on your tractor. I have also found that the angle the BB hits the ground determines a lot of what happens and how much it actually smooths, digs and fills. It's good to experiment. I rarely ever use the scarafiers. I have found that a Ratchet Rake is a great tool for grading gravel. For relatively minor water damage or wear, it does a wonderful job smoothing things out faster than a BB.

Sounds like a nice setup. I agree I could probably go bigger but I already owned this one when I had a 2025r so far it works. I might upgrade at some point. I’m not familiar with a ratchet rake but will Google that in a moment. Thanks for the comment and hope you are having a good night

In my experience you will have to rip it or the same groove will keep coming back to haunt you.
