This is a older video file that I reposted. I've had so many requests on how to fix negative slope near the home and this video shows detailed information giving dozens of pointers throughout. The roof run off system is dated and we made many improvements over the years. The concept is the same. I hope you enjoy the video.

Hey Bob. It was great to meet you today. Thanks to the team for doing a great job on our home. Looking forward to seeing the footage you took, and seeing the system in action!

What do you do if the siding of your house is hardie board? Right now I have 1-3" from the bottom of the siding to the ground. We have clay soil in the Rocky Mountain state. I was thinking of using that to go around the house like you did sloping to a swale that I would cut in and then add gutters along that same side of the house.
Great work; a question: Does it make any sense to surround the house with a hard surface like concrete or paver stones to divert even more top water away from the foundation? I understand that sloping away from the house is necessary, but is there any added benefit of doing this slope with a hard surface and not soil?

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Got it, clay is like a rubber liner and is good but like @akinun asked, can DYIers use concrete or paver stones or some other hard surface to keep water away? Or do hard surfaces other than clay not work? Thanks.

A few questions: 1. Can you have too positive of a pitch? 2. Can you pile up dirt/clay (I have clay in my area) up to the brick facade? (I've heard water penetrates through vinyl and wood, rotting behind the wall)

When the pitch is so positive that it causes water to run fast enough to erode the ground cover and dirt, it's too positive. That's where you want to think about an open French drain (that's a "dry creekbed" most of the time) if it's limited to a narrow path, or making terraces separated by retaining walls if it's a broader area. The retaining walls can be very expensive, but in extreme cases there really isn't any alternative. (You'll have less trouble mowing without a huge slope, too.)

would like to see a video where you follow up on how the system is performing
Great video! Love putting the French drain and the downspout pipe in the same trench. Awesome job....Questions: 1) did you put the repurposed clay directly on top off the existing foundation perimeter turf..... I don't see that the sod was removed? Will that not lead to subsidence and voids? 2) What if you don't live in an area with clay based soil to establish a positive slope away from the foundation? ? Is there a second best alternative ?
Please explain why do you think water can not penetrate clay ?

If I did a French drain exactly how you guys do wrapped and everything but don’t have any grass it’s all bad clay could I top the wrapped French with top soil? Then plant grass seed immediately? I can’t really use a sod cutter as I have no sod to begin with
@timkehrer54042 жыл бұрын
@Bradley Hanners there is just no way I could afford to sod it so top soil would work though over the wrapped French drain??

If the clay soil up against the house acts as a water barrier "plastic like" the how does the water get through the same clay soil you put back over the top of the French drain? I live in a clay soil environment and the water doesn't penetrate the soil. How would I get the water down to the drain?

Hi, I live in Dallas which unfortunately is too far away from you. I’m planning on building my own french drain along with catch basins but I’m hesitating in making a decision which products to buy and how to connect and run them. Would you be willing to design my drainage system along with suggestions for what exactly and how much to buy? For a fee of course.

With a French drain in clay it’s better to backfill with a non clay enriched top soil you said it yourself it acts like a pool liner so your reducing the water intake from the top you will get better performance by not putting back the clay soil over the French drain as it will eventually clog the fabric this came directly from NDS and there contractor certification course or what’s your take on this maybe there wrong but makes sense to me
