Nest Hello Yellow Blinking Light? This video will show you how to troubleshoot & solve power problems with the Nest Hello. This video will explain what & why your Nest Hello is having problems. If you watch the entire video you shouldn't have to hire an electrician to fix your voltage problem with the Nest Hello. The components that we talk about in this video are the transformer, chime, power kit & Nest Hello doorbell. The biggest problem with the Nest Hello doorbell is the chime. The chime drains the voltage from the transformer causing host of problems that create an under voltage condition. This can make it hard to troubleshoot the power problems with the Nest Hello. To fix this problem we think the best solution is to bypass the chime so that the transformer feeds power directly to the doorbell. Instead of changing out the transformer from a 16 volt to a 24 volt. This will ensure that there will not be an under voltage problem.

I really appreciate you sharing your solution. My doorbell was offline more than it was on, and it was driving me up the wall and nearly through it. The wifi connection to every other device was fine. I even have a mesh point 5 feet from the door and set the Nest Hello as the priority device. When I then investigated the power situation, I couldn't find the transformer anywhere in my old house. I was about to give up and call someone. So this tutorial and your advice really helped me out. Thank you for making it easy to understand. I don't mind retiring the chime and relying on the Google Assistant, as long as it works and doesn't go offline every few minutes. So far so good. Thanks again!

My nest doorbell has had the yellow light since we installed it 2 weeks ago. After watching your video, I ran the nest app again and told the app that the doorbell has green light, and voila... no more yellow light and my doorbell video now works!!! I will check the voltage next (if I can find the transformer) and possibly just bypass the chime like you did. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and this video!

Fabulous video! Thank you. So I purchased a Google Nest. My 11 year old home has two chimes. After installation the Hello light yellow meaning not enough power. I rang the doorbell once and the light turned blue! But, the first floor chime would barely ring and the second floor chime rang but had a loud buzz and hum. I’m sure I have a 16V, 10 VAC transformer but can’t find it. So I took your suggestion and on the chime that buzzed I twisted the transformer and front red wires together and PROBLEM SOLVED! First floor chime works fine and is loud and Nest Hello works fine! And instead of the upstairs chime, my google mini announces” there is a visitor at the front door!” Even better than a chime. Your videos are the best and saved me from trying to locate and replace the transformer with a 16V, 30 VAC one.

A good solution. This will work pretty well for all the folks that are also fighting with intercom systems that want to use Nest Hellos as well. You can just upgrade the transformer and send the power to both the intercom as well as the Nest Hello.

This video has completely fixed my months long problems with my nest hello! Our nest hello worked for many months with some minor problems disconnecting off and on, but over time it got worse and worse. For the past 6 months the camera has been virtually unusable because it would actually disconnect from the internet about 100 times a day, causing me to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out if my network wasn't working. I've spent hours trying to get help from nest support but they are not helpful and have mostly just blamed my network. In the past few weeks it started to dawn on me that maybe there was a power issue that was causing the camera to disconnect because it wasn't high enough voltage. Earlier today I stumbled across this video, interestingly the wall chime used to work but had since stopped, likely around when the camera started acting up. After watching this video I quickly ran over to the wall chime and bypassed the chime as outlined in this video, seconds later the camera started working 100%! It's like a dream, I had all but completely given up on this nest hello and was so close to just ripping it out. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I will gladly donate money to you or buy you a coffee, you have saved me from so much frustration I've been experiencing for months! Thank you!

Thanks! Didn't know you could leave the chime disconnected! Our dogs go crazy whenever the doorbell rings, so this will be awesome. Notification is enough. Would be nice if you did one that shows the transformer swap including the actual wiring. All the videos I've seen so far, people point it out and say you'll have to swap them, but don't show exactly which wires to connect.

Very good video, thank you. I have a 16VAC transformer. Will be changing to a 24VAC transformer today prior to installing the Nest Hello. Also, I suggest moving the doorbell transformer to the electrical panel so it's easy to find. there was some minor electrical activity causing some movement of door chime tappets but not enough to hit the chime bars. This happened every 10-20 seconds and if there there is no noise in house you can hear a faint buzz for 1-2 secs. I by-passed the chime and now I can enjoy real quiet times. I wasn't sure if I could do that until I saw your video. I have a google home so I really didn't need the chime. Google should be more clear about this. The buzz was driving me nuts when I was taking naps in the living room. Thanks!

The "power kit" is not just a capacitor. It is also a switch that the nest app uses to turn on and off the chime. There is a mode setting to turn the indoor chime off or on depending if you dont want to be disturbed by the doorbell. Personally i dont like the delay from pressing to bell to google mimi announcing the doorbell or the lag in the network for the push notification to your phone. I like the chime. The real solution is to get the 24 volt 40VA transformer and put in a resistor at the chime to drop the voltage to just the chime.

PS. I posted my review before I watched your video. It actually makes a lot of sense. I’m glad I watched it. I liked and subscribed. Thanks you for this detailed explanation. I learned something. Like you said I do have a couple of Google Home Minis around the house and I think having a chime is now probably very unnecessary and redundant. Plus forgot that I had also attached a chime extender years ago so I can hear the bell upstairs too. Under technical info in the Nest Hello App, it says my voltage is 16.4V but didn’t realize it would drop drastically when someone rings the doorbell. I will still have to probably change the transformer to a 24B. But that doesn’t explain why the notifications are so delayed and the app is not respecting my settings for curtailing them. Also the time it takes to respond to a doorbell with the slow process of unlocking the phone, opening the app and starting to talk to the person at the door. What’s the solution??

Hey there good video, so it's been about a year now since you posted this, any issues? I called Nest / Google tech support, they said it is not required to use the chime adapter BUT it is recommended to still use it even if you are bypassing the chime. They said something about it being a protector in case a spike in voltage which could potentially "burn" the "Hello" which I would say is essentially what a capacitor does. But others have said long term they have noticed issues by doing this..

In the UK the standard doorbell uses a 8v transformer, so that is a problem.I purchased one with a 12-24v transformer. It had 4 connection points two for mains live and neutral and two for the door bell push. Fortunately the transformer and connectors were on a small pcb. I removed it and did a quick search for the wiring on the internet. I had to break a connection and solder a new pair of wires so that the 24v could power the nest hello chime and detect the bell push. Great the camera light came on and the hello chimed and app rang on the phone. But no ring from the bell! Going into the settings you have to turn on the indoor chime, but that still didn’t work. Looking a little further down there is a chime duration set at 1 second. Changing this to 6 seconds allowed the bell to carry on ringing! Result. If you are buying one of these I suggest you get an external transformer (24v) and a battery powered chime case. You will have to mount the transformer somewhere and there will be plenty of space inside the chime box for the nest chime.

This is a great viedo! Hope I would find it earlier.... I connected my hello directly to the chime with 110v. Seems that my apartment didn't have a transformer. Followed Nest intructions and with 110v nest got a green flashing led on top, and now that I bought a transformer it does no light up and just gets hot right on where the wires are connected.... Any suggestion that may help? Have I burnout it? =(

So I bought one for my parents 25 yr old home and the problem I had was the door bell chime was cycling constantly but not at full power. I ended up bypassing the chime like you did but I'd like to get it working. I'm wondering if updating the chime and/or transformer would work, since my problem was a little different than yours.

I tried installing a simplisafe doorbell camera and have a similar issue. It is 1950 house with a doorbell that hits 4 long tubes (like an organ) to chime. My doorbell just kept chiming and there was no visible power to the doorball face. I tried the chime connector and I was just the same - keeps chiming. I bought a new doorbell and it came with a transformer. Need to still investigate the wiring in the attic. Did you find a solution?

Nice job of clarifying the basic electrical flows....however you did not mention wattage issues. We now have TWO NEST doorbells plus ONE "button" doorbell. The button rings the chime fine, but the NEST doorbells will not ring the chime (otherwise they work fine) So my understanding now is ---I need more WATTS (48) to power my total setup---thus a 48 WATT transformer. Is that right?

I want the traditional indoor, wired chime to ring when someone comes to my house and rings the Nest Hello. I have the nest 'power connector' installed/connected to the wires from the wall, and then have the 'power connector' connected to my chime. When everything is connected, and you press the Nest Hello, the indoor chime does not work. Any thoughts as to why the chime is not working when someone presses the Nest Hello button outside? I have a 16Volt/10VAC transformer. Can I remove the Nest 'power connector' but instead of 'wire nutting' the two wires (from the wall) to bypass the chime, can I connect them directly to my chime as if it was an 'old school' or 'normal' doorbell? so the indoor chime will work when the Nest Hello button is pressed by a visitor?

Sorry, I haven’t seen this situation before. So, I assume that they are both independent of each other? One does a front the other does a rear/side door? I would think it would be possible if you already have or can get two wires to each chime to connect them. You would have to get a 24V 40va Transformer. Actually thinking this through as I’m typing I thing it may draw too much power through the Nest Hello. This would likely cause premature failure. However, I may give it try to see what happens. I would never recommend doing it though.

Thanks for your reply. Been doing tons of research and your videos helped me so much better formulate my question. I called electricians and they had no clue what I was talking about Now I better understand I live in TX 2 story houses made the same are dime a dozen It appears we have 1 doorbell 2 chimes and a transformer I hearing I can buy a 24v transformer and then it should ring both via the transformer I have to order it so in the mean time I connected the nest hello sensor to the upstairs chime Disconnected the downstairs chime and used a wire nut to tie the grey and white together This stopped the buzzing and random chimes going off It sounds like if nest would let you buy an extra white connector I could connect it downstairs to kill the line when not in use like it does up stairs Thank you again for your videos and I hope this makes sense what I'm writing 1 more thing you have a video showing nest hello and a Google home mini. We have found having 5 Google speakers home hub minis and speaker you have no control which is the primary and which will ring as your doorbell if the camera doesn't see a face it just rings 1 not all Anyways if you get a chance run a 24v transformer 2 chimes and the nest doorbell and see what happens thanks again keep the great content coming

So was having the buzzing issue with my chime, so I decided to bypass the chime as you explained in this video. Before I did, I tested my transformer (16V/10VA) and was getting 20V. I wired the two wires together but still wasn’t getting power at my Nest Hello. I tested the transformer again and it showed 0V. I figured a bad transformer was the issue all along, so picked up a new one (16V/30VA) and wired it up. At first, the Hello worked great, then it stopped. I checked my new transformer and am getting 0V again. Is my Hello killing my transformers?

My Nest Hello recently started shutting off entirely. Worked nearly flawlessly for 2.5 years. It's been off for the past 2 days (colder weather in Canada, but nothing near the operating limitations), and just came back online again this morning (-1 celsius). The blue halo light and green status light will abruptly shut off when it's malfunctioning, and I cannot figure out why. I'm wondering now if it's a power/transformer issue? If anyone has thoughts, I'd be grateful to hear them --- Google has told me to just "buy a new one"... Thanks for the great video!

My ringer box doesnt exist. I checked with a neighbor that has same model home and it seems it got condemned. They removed it and speckled the wall. I don’t see any voltage in my current doorbell. Any recommendations?

This was going to be the the smart doorbell best buy but not including a OEM power supply with it was a headache to all buyers paying more than $200. Mine stayed in the box for a month tell I found a suitable psu for it. Now after around 3 years it stopped working. I changed the psu to another one and it completely stopped working, no lights Nothing. I will go back to traditional doorbell camera better as my previous COMMAX system worked for around 15 years with issues.

If I have 2 nest door bell, I want to bypass the chime, should I connect the 3 wires (front,trans,rear) together?
@biodek
@biodek Жыл бұрын
I noticed that you have a three connector chime but only use the front so your bypass works for that. With this same question, what do you do if you have the back door as well using a nest hello?

Great video, unfortunately didn't solve my problem. My problem is that when the power at the breaker box is turned on, my chime constantly rings and my Hello doesn't even power up.

That sounds like the wires leaving the chime going to the doorbell (Nest Hello) are making contact somewhere. Did you have this buzzing noise problem before you upgraded? If not it is likely the wires are touching where the come out of the wall outside. They may have missing insulation or twisted together.

Had this same issue, but its because my doorbell has a digital chime module for an Intercom. This made it impossible for the NestHello to work properly (not enough power was going to the doorbell wiring), but due to the voltage fluctuation the digital chime kept thinking that the doorbell was being pressed. I am going to resolve it by bypassing the doorbell altogether.

I tried this but if I by pass the chime, and connect the nest directly to my transformer, it gets HOT really quick (transformer) and the nest doesn't even turn on. But if I plug the nest using a micro USB cable it turn on right away. Any thoughts? It was working fine at one point, now it won't turn on with the transformer. I even bought a 24 bolt one but nope. I would get same issue and a buzzing sound from my transformer. Then my regular doorbell wouldn't stop ringing. So I thought maybe I have the wires touching somewhere, so I bought new doorbell wiring and connected directly to test it out... And still transformer gets HOT and nest wont power on. 🙄

my nest hello is not connected to my existing house doorbell - I have a dedicated x-former that only powers the nest hello. I've owned it for 7 months and the first 6 months no problems...in the last month, whenever the nest hello button is pushed, the power to the hello reboots. Apparently it's been a common issue from what I read on the google help site...and there's been no remedy posted. Please help. TIA.

What happens if you leave everything wired and just turn off the chime in the app settings so the chime doesn’t ring? What does the voltage say then? Also, the yellow ring would indicate at setup that there isn’t enough voltage from the transformer if the transformer is below 16v sitting idle. You should demonstrate with a transformer below 16v.

My transformer was to old to power it. So I bought a new transformer and you don't need an electrician. I fixed it my self.
@monkey205123
@monkey205123 5 жыл бұрын
So the transformer is connected to the eletricity, which in turn powers the chime, which then powers the doorbell. Is that correct?
@JhonPereda
@JhonPereda 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. When you tie the two red wires together, they no longer power the chime and all the voltage is going straight from the transformer to the doorbell.

I’ve had my nest doorbell for almost 2 years now and for the past month it would not connect. I only get the little green blinking light no matter what I try. I reset the doorbell via the reset button and also held the button down. I uninstalled and tried to reinstall the doorbell with no luck. I tried doing this bypass shown in the video with no luck as well. Has anyone had this same issue and have any insight?

Mine at first didn't power up at all, so I followed wires around my basement for an hour, found _a_ transformer, and found that it was under-powered. So I bought a new one. When I went to install it I noticed that this transformer was for the upstairs apartment. Whoops. So, I finally found the correct transformer after another long search and discovered that this one is rated at the proper (recommended) voltage to supply power to the Nest. Instead of changing it I just checked the doorbell again. For some reason there was a blue light this time... It had been properly installed for over a week, didn't work at all, no power, and then when I looked at the transformer it somehow powered up and worked fine. For a while, anyway. After about 3 months of flawless operation the device, once again, will no longer power up. How is this possible? Is it a broken transformer? Is there a short somewhere else in the system? I have an ammeter and can check everything but so far I've found nothing is wrong with the wiring of the house.
@sellgooddeals-DIY

This is definitely bizarre. Unhook your Nest Hello and with your meter test the voltage of the two wires. Then locate your transformer and test the voltage of the two wire terminals. Tell the voltage of both of them.
