Andrew, you have saved me!!! I recently returned from 2 and 1/2 months of shooting wildlife in Botswana and South Africa with a Canon R5C. I've owned various RED cameras but decided I'm too old to carry all that weight, especially the batteries, around and I love the new Canon RF 100-500 lens for wildlife. But I was too stupid to really get to know that camera before I left and basically learned as I went along. The footage from the first 2 weeks or so was way overexposed. After a month and a half of looking for answers as to how to fix it, I finally found you!! I seriously can not thank you enough! Let me know if you want any lion, leopard or elephant footage. It is yours for the asking.

Thanks so much Judy! Glad to hear this was able to help you recover the early R5C footage. Looking forward to seeing what you were able to fix (and get with it overall). 😀

Excellent videos by Andrew. His videos are from a slightly different perspective and give alternate ways to use FCP. I really liked his multicam with PIP video as well but couldn’t find the comment tag. It was exactly what I needed. 👍

I agree with the other commenters. I learned so much especially with the tough questions like whether to switch to Wide Gamut. I do walking videos in The Bronx New York. I tried my Osmo Pocket today and pretty much my entire video was over blown.

@andrewsaraceniАй бұрын
Thanks for the sub! D-Log has its own color space (D-Gamut), but it's still easiest to do a Rec.709 conversion on it like other camera log variants.

What about if only some lights in the shot are over blown? Everything else is fine? In slog 2.
@andrewsaraceni2 жыл бұрын
S-Log2 should already give you maximum dynamic range if you shot it correctly. You can see how far the usual exposure tools get you to recover the highlights, or if it's not too bad/distracting leave it as is. But even if it's just part of the shot, I'd do the same thing.

@@andrewsaraceni the problem I'm having is that if I decrease highlights, all of my image gets darker. I just want to control the two lamps in the scene which are showing over blown in Luma chart
@andrewsaraceni2 жыл бұрын
@@MR-AK You could create a color mask just around that part of the image to adjust exposure; that should leave the rest as-is.

Hey Andrew, thanks for posting these tips! We had great success until we tried to bring our fixed overexposed clips back into a non-HDR project. Do you have any recommendations for using the method you described and then being able to export into an SDR project? (We only had marginal success using FCP's HDR Tools). Thanks!
@andrewsaraceni5 ай бұрын
No problem! What camera/device were the original clips shot with? And were they in HDR or SDR to begin with? You want to make sure you make the same changes at the Library levels for the other projects, and ensure the clip changes (e.g. for LUT) still carry over.
@HeGoesSheGoes5 ай бұрын
@@andrewsaraceni Hi! Everything was shot SDR. We're assembling a travel video with perhaps 100 clips, 4 of which were overexposed. So we tried your method of throwing those 4 clips into a new HDR library, which really helped. However, getting those fixed clips back into our main SDR project was a bit of challenge. Changing the whole original SDR library to HDR for compatibility means all those dozens of SDR clips need to be adjusted, so it's not the best solution for us. We can live with having a few overexposed clips in our video, but we thought we'd give this method a go. Just can't seem to make it all match up.
@HeGoesSheGoes5 ай бұрын
Forgot to add, clips were shot on a Canon R8, but we don't shoot in log. We do use a neutral setting however as opposed to Canon's presets.
@andrewsaraceni5 ай бұрын
@@HeGoesSheGoes I would try taking just those corrected clips, and once fixed, export them (in a good codec, e.g. ProRes or at least H.264), and then import those newly exported clips back into the regular SDR project with all of the original footage that's fine.

Love this Andrew - question, if your change your library to HDR to rescue the highlights can you then just export the final edit as red 709 HD for example?
@andrewsaraceni3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you should still be able to have your project set to Rec. 709 (even with an HDR library) so the final exports are in that color space.
