In this short film I fix the sagging shelves in a kitchen cupboard. The laminated particle board shelves were bending under the weight of the dishes. I decided to strengthen the shelves by adding some strips of maple to both sides. The wood for this repair was ripped from some leftover hardwood flooring. We decided to have some fun with a simple snow-day kitchen project.

if you add a metal strip under it will do all work.

It's a really beautiful solution to a common problem. From one who was excluded from woodshop work (girls were to sew and cook, don't you know) I appreciate seeing all that's needed to be done as I learn by watching things. Love your workshop!

Your motto is probably “Do it right or don’t do it at all.” Wow! That’s high level. Great video, oddly satisfying. I too. Would probably just… Flip the shelf over. This here is a true working craftsman. The rest of us be lazy.

Nice video! But all you had to do was flip them upside down. 😛
@MANaboutTOOLS
@MANaboutTOOLS 4 жыл бұрын
I've done that in the past but it does not fix the problem. Another option would be to get solid wood (laminated pine) and replace the particle board shelves with that. Would be much better too.

I'd definitely flip them if renting or in a jam. Otherwise, I prefer to fix things once and in a way that lasts. Also, the bottom shelf couldn't be flipped.

I'm not a coffee drinker -- can't even stand the smell -- but I know one thing about it, which I learned as a teenager working at a Sizzler from the owner, who did know coffee. If it's even a little bitter, put a pinch of salt in the bottom of the filter before you start building the dark, smelly liquid. Bitterness gone.

Thank you for both the nice video and a totally functional fix to those shelves. Solved the problem, got to play in the shop and didn't have to shovel snow-a win-win if I ever saw one.

Great fun snowy day video, Mr.and Ms. MAT. I love your kind delivery of coffee - perfect thing for a snowy morning. We just replaced an old bookshelf with some solid wood ones that I had picked up for a song - the old bookshelf was pressboard, and wasn't too impressed with the double layer of books I had crammed on each shelf. solid construction is just so much better! Much love to you both, hope to see you soon, now that the snow has gone (for a while....)

Loved the video. Had a huge smile on my face from the beginning. Particle board is usually the worst possible choice in material to use as shelving or as cabinets in my opinion. It has little or no structural properties to it, and I have yet to find any that hasn't sagged over time when any amount of weight is applied unless it's supported by something stronger like your fix of these shelves. Anyway, Max is a gorgeous kitty and comes up with great ideas. Thanks for the work you put into the video. Really appreciate it.

Like anybody has spare Florine just laying around, looking for a shelf to sturdy. I had to go through 2 dozen tubes of toothpaste to gather up enough to strengthen my shelves and gums.

I love this! The fact that it was the cat's idea for a quick, fun snow day project is flippin' perfect. And I love the snap wardrobe change, so silly. You've never done a narrative story video, at least not that I've seen, so I must say this is great work for a fist time stab at it, if indeed this is your first. Really fun, good work!

I had an extra shelf for that cabinet. Already had the edge strip applied so it was perfect for doubling up the bottom.
