Fix Samsung DLP that shuts off after 20 seconds and shows three blinking lights

This Samsung HL-85687W television shuts off by itself after just 20 to 30 seconds and then displays three blinking lights. Turns out that the solution cost just 22 bucks.
I tried several times to extract and reinsert the old bulb, but that did not help. I shorted out the thermostat (after ensuring that the fans were running), but that didn't help.
The new bulb came after just two days. The specifications on the cage holding the new bulb were off just a little, so a few love taps with a hammer were required.

If anyone is watching this in 2023, I just retired this TV after almost 20 years of good service. I replaced the bulb 3 times in those years. I used the $100 OEM bulbs and had no fitment issues. I wish I had known of the cheaper knock offs. I could have used one this time around but decided that it was time to let it go. The fans had stopped working and I had the little door removed with a $20 desk fan pointed at the opening. With the problems it has I cant really sell it on CL either but the projector is still fine and could go on for another few years. Great TVs.

Heck, I dunno. I didn't want this silly thing to end up in landfill, so I repaired it on camera and gave it to a family who weren't exactly swimming in cash.

Thanks for taking the time for this. Same problem, including the slight difference in lamp casing. I haven't yet solved the problem though. (Mine is the 50" on the space age, silver high stand with the glass floor. Bought in early 2000s. I really don't want to part with it cuz it looks so rad. So I will keep looking for ideas. Thank goodness for good-hearted people like you who take the time to show us techie scaredy-cats how turn a screwdriver. Believe me, it helps! All the best.

Great video! I had the same problem where my 61" DLP would come on for about 20 seconds and then turn off with 2 (or 3?) of the lights in the front flashing. Didn't think it was the bulb being burnt out since it was showing a picture for those 20 seconds. But after watching a few videos, (especially this one), I bought a new bulb (higher quality, around $75), plugged it in and *poof*... it works great now!! :-D It's like having a new TV! Thanks for the video!

That this video has kept even one TV out of landfill makes me very happy. The new flat screen TVs are awesome, but these beasts are still great.

I'm really glad this helped. It's worth the $20 to keep these out of landfill--not to mention that you don't need to buy another TV.

Whenever you diagnose, you dont need to put the covers back on. Cause then you have to go back and forth putting stuff back on. Only should've out on the deflecter.

@@SAPLSMW yeah no problem. It was informative and these TV's are notorious for either the fan going because of dust, and the projector going because of overuse. But Good video man!

I have the model code: HLT6756WX/XAA it starting with a broken pixel and a few days later it more and the screen turns black but you can still hear the audio from the video. Is this also a bad bulb? Do you know a better bulb for this TV? I found one on Amazon for $29 and it has a very bad rating. Thanks for the great video.

Can you clean it with IPA? Have the same problem. I reset the lamp life but obviously the sensor is a real pain. It knows when the company wants $$$.
@SAPLSMW
@SAPLSMW 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that these can be cleaned. Likely, the computer in the TV was sensing that the lamp was failing which may be why the TV was dimmed shortly before failure each time as an attempt to keep the TV going with less power passed through the lamp.

Can someone help? My TV samsung DLP picture cut off then 3-4 seconds later the audio and the TV shuts off, then all three lights on the front blinks. Could it be a lamp? I didn't think it would be because before we replaced the other lamp the TV shuts off altogether rather than video followed by the audio.

I bought a new lamp, & now my lens does not show a full screen. Is it the lens or does the lamp to be adjusted, aligned or something? It's weird, I can't tell what it is, I just part of the lens is dark. Like a box, & on the TV, it's like I have boarders, or something.. Thanks in advance

Make sure that the lamp is seated correctly; it may need a few love taps like in the video. Also, what brand of lamp did you buy? Would you consider making a short video that shows the symptoms. If you can take the lamp out so that we can see it then that would help to ensure that there is not problem with it.

You could, but I probably won't help. Put a dot com at the end of my youtube name to see what my expertise is--it isn't TV repair. If you make a video and post it here then people in the social network of KZbin can see it and propose a solution. Just pass your phone around the TV while recording and make sure we can see inside, see the screen, see your work and see the lamp.

Feel it to ensure that it isn't overheating. I would assume that the temperature is getting too high and a safety feature is causing it to turn off. Taking the back off and vacuuming the inside of dust and cat hair might fix it up.

lucky ass. I replaced the bulb.. Didn't work then gutted. Realized I also need a new power supply board(burn spots), color wheel(Connector fried to dust), and a new main chip(White dots on screen)(Most expensive part- around 250-300) Cheapest possible total with refurbished parts 3 to 400 fml lol..... perhaps time to chunk this 72" son of a gun yet it's so cool... It's like throwing away a diamond with a scratch lol please send 1 million dollars my way

I couldn't in this case. It was just a chance that I took. New 4K TVs bigger than this can be had for less than $300 from Walmart and last for decades. I wouldn't bother repairing this again.
