Excellent job on the rear axle, you can either do the job right or do the job again!

Thanks for the new video. I've been watching for it every day for the last couple of months and wondered what happened to you. Looking forward to the engine assembly!

here's a tip or two that might be useful... i recently replaced the crown ring and pinion gear in the axle of my 1953 MGTD, for reasons that need not be explained, but during that process it was noted that there is a very small vent hole in the top of the axle housing that is designed to relieve a significant amount of pressure that can build inside the axle when the oil inside heats up. this can happen while driving a constant 45MPH, or so, for several hours in 100F temps. without that vent the pressure will force, and did in my case, the oil inside the axle through the seals at each end and flood the brake backing plates and everything that is attached to them, including the brake shoes, with oil. that vent is easily overlooked and can easily get clogged. now, i don't know for certain HOW or IF the TC's addresses this axle oil pressure issue, but it may have some mechanism to do so, i would think, as oil WILL expand when heated. one other item which may or may not be of significance involved the large steel U-bolt shackles that hold the axle housing to the springs on the TD, although it looks like there may be some other form of attachment on the TC and may very well have been the part that failed on your axle. anyway... the axle housing is cast iron on the TD and the shackles are made of steel. over the years the iron will yield, more readily if the shackles are not sufficiently tightened resulting in an ever-deepening groove in the axle housing where it contacts the shackle. the grooves were observed to be about 3/16" deep on my axle housing when the crown ring and pinion work was being performed. fortunately, this is not un-common, and Moss sells protective steel axle collars to address the issue. it should be noted that the reason for my purchasing my fifteen year-old body off restoration, was not so much to own a car that was immediately drivable, but so to be assured that i had a car that had been COMPLETELY disassembled and cleaned fifteen years ago!

Some great points here, thank you. TC has a vent hole in the filler cap for the axle. I checked it was clear. Re U bolts. Not applicable to TC, but certainly to MGA, as they suffer similar issues. The protective u shaped collars are great! Thank you Moss!

I feel your pain... i just went though the same process with a 72 MG Midget.. what a mess... and then my 63 MGB back to back.. All this over the last couple months. I am over spraying and scraping etc. but there is no way to do all the work correctly without cleaning the bits er lumps.

@@limit55 Grime time. Gri me to the moon. It's a grime there isn't a simpler way. One think I learned in 25 years in the car biz, and having owned 100 plus cars, and doing the vast majority of my own work... Porsche grease, Land Rover grease, Fairthorpe Electron Climax grease, MGA grease.. it's all the same.

This was more cartoon style legs up on the leaf spring to push it inboard more, while pulling on the axle to get the indexing hole to slip together 😂

@@limit55 Put lots of grease on all moving parts while rebuilding your motor. Assists first startup +initial running and easier to hand turn motor over when attaching timing chains / bearings etc. best wishes. craig
