And make sure there is no corrosion at the connection point between the rod or underground water pipe and the connecting wire clamp. Also a whole house surge protector is a good idea.

Hello Mike,i do not know how it is connected in the USA but here in Holland the 0 is connected to the ground earth through whole the Netherlands,so if i connect my system to the ground earth it sounds like shit. Can there be a ground loop in my gear?

1:52 zero volt reference. for digital. ut seems to reference 0 more critically . and behaves like a single point source for the entire signal….this could affect the soundtage if it does not reference that 0 / point source properly electrically. mostly could introduce jitter.

Problem is the ground often contributes feeding dirt into the system too since it's shared with everything else in your home.

Not only your home. But every house in the neighborhood that's on the same distribution system. At least here in the Netherlands. A faulty earth rod in another house can actually lift ground in another place above earth🙈
@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 Жыл бұрын
Small correction: Those wiring check devices that you plug into a wall outlet make sure that the hot wire is the hot, the neutral is the neutral, and that the ground has continuity with the neutral (usually 3 lights). If buildings are wired according to code, the neutral wire (current return path, usually the white wire) and the ground wire in your outlets are connected together in the main panel, they're not supposed to be connected to each other in branch/sub panels. This doesn't tell you ANYTHING about the quality of the main panel grounding to earth (ground rods) or grounding to your plumbing. Those testers will show you that everything is correct with or without earth grounding or plumbing grounding. Those devices cannot check that.

@OCDHIFiGuy Жыл бұрын
OK so they check for correct phase only. So much for cheap Home Depot bullshit
@fabien7079
@fabien7079 Жыл бұрын
Yes, these cheap device are a good starting point to check if the wall outlets was wired properly in the house. For checking quality of the ground quality of the wall outlets... Can this be done with voltmeter? We can a check visually as mentioned with connection of grounding rod, but they could be issues somewhere else. How can we check to make sure we are all good?

As a registered NZ sparky we have to measure the resistance between the ground peg and a meter probe inserted into the ground.We are only allowed to run additional earth pegs in series only with the earth terminated at the earth bar in the main distribution board. I recommend to people who think they have earthing issues to first check earth connections after turning off main distribution board power first and then soaking ground with water around earth pegs if soil is dry.
@OCDHIFiGuy

Yes, you can also buy special concrete that stays wet of you live in the desert. We don't have dryness issues where I live however.

Most homes built before the 80's didnt have them. The plumbing was all metal pipes before then, and had long runs off the house. When PVC plumbing became the norm is when a grounding rod or grounding electrodes started becoming more common. I dont think it was until the 90's though that it bacame mandatory in my state. My statements are just what i remember reading some time ago.

Great Advice. I design and build my own DYI analog audio "add-ons" for my system and also build power amps. It's important to implement a HQ single point "star ground" node in your audio system. This should be bonded to "earth" ground and one point and one point only. Too many ground connections in an audio system will produce "ground loops" and result in excessive hum and noise.

I also use greenwave EMI suppressors. LED lights and switching power supplies create a lot noise, which can be measured and treated. This is especially useful if you can hear your neighbors radio coming through your speakers.

All metal parts shall be bonded to ground. New houses have a concrete uffer or rebar for proper grounding, old houses often need two ground rods when the panel has been upgraded. Also all detached buildings such as shops with power need two ground rods outside and all metal piping going into it to have equal ground potential. Also if the siding is metal it needs to be bonded. There you go in a nut shell without throwing NEC code articles at you. Never use the grounding conductor as a neutral either, its only there to facilitate a low impedance path of a fault to ground in order to trip the over current protection knows as a breaker. ;)

Grounds, grounding, ground loops, .... can be such an horrible problem. Tricky to fix. With all the ways each piece of hardware is connected to every other one's ground! AC cord, line level cables, chassis ground connectors, ... and not only hum, but all the way up to RF. a bad RCA ground connection can literally act like a cat's whisker detector and inject RF into the signal path. Dissimilar metals used for connectors.

Ground "enhancement" devices are just nonsense which very often intentionally introduce ground loops and other grounding issues. If you really want to learn how to properly ground your system and gear read up on Bill Whitlock and Bruno Putzeys. You can find numerous papers and presentations from them regarding grounding. Do it properly and you won't have to think about it again. Bill has dealt with grounding and AC cable issues in large concert halls lowering the noise floor of all the gear in the building.
