Great video per usual! Maybe I missed it in the video, but a tip I would add is to make sure to bend your knees and get the body a bit low (like some of Oakley’s throws in the video)...for me at least it helps to get my lower body into the shot and also less likely to roll my wrist. I like to think of it like skipping a rock on water or a low kill shot for racquetball.

Good advice, I especially liked the part where you talked about disc selection.. Noone seems to talk about that but most discs over speed 7-8 seem to forehand way better.. Flat top and good rim depth. For me anyways I feel like a wide rim makes a forehand way easier. I can throw only one of my midranges FH but thats it, everything else is fairway or faster.

Great content! Even an old dog like me can get a lot out of your vids. Your focus on fundamentals is a fine example for players at any level. Thank you! For me, forehand doesn't come naturally, and I have to focus on not rolling my wrist. The only way I can do this is if I keep my hand facing palm up, including the 2-finger stack grip. If I put my fingers sideways, it makes the slippery slope happen into wrist rolling. By keeping my fingertips on the top plate, I can also control the angle better.
@krpi76854 жыл бұрын
Another grip tip regarding joint pain: If the regular stack grip ends up hurting your finger joints due to the disc forcing them to bend backwards try throwing with the index finger against the rim, middle finger on top. This way the rim shape doesn't force your fingers to bend backwards as much and you can bend them slightly inwards as well. It will feel weird at first and you might lose out on a smidge of elastic rebound but if you have that joint pain this will certainly allow you to keep throwing.

Definitely a beginner, but I have way more control with a split grip.(Middle finger pad on rim & index finger 1" away towards center of disc, thumb pressing on index finger) No flutter with this grip, but distance limited to 200-250' (great accuracy) Favorite Forehand discs : TRUTH and MVP - Amp Looking forward to Forehand Guide part #2!

It def seems harder with slower discs for me. With my leopard3 and river I have to put what feels like a big hyzer angle on the disc to keep them from turning over hard. When I flick a ballista or captain which are much faster discs it feels like I don't need nearly as much angle. Going to try your tips regarding grip and take some video. Hey! Great video, really clear and concise explanations. I have one tip, and one quibble: TIP - when learning to throw the forehand, I found that "leaning over your release" really was invaluable advice . . . it forces the thrower to keep the center of gravity lower, preventing "air shots" and also tending to force the throwing elbow into the hip, leading to cleaner releases. QUIBBLE - though I do agree that a Fairway driver, or 8-10 speed disc is the most suited for all-around forehand flexibility, I'm surprised you didn't recommend starting with a Midrange (Latitude/Justice), as these discs are even more forgiving for the noob - which would likely lead to developing better form and control, especially for approach shots where finesse is everything? Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks again for the hard work!

So I have a question about forehands that you vaguely touched upon is the one finger grip. I'm a forehand thrower (I suck at backhands and been throwing forehand for several years) and I use only 1 finger and I average 250 foot shots (including a 299 foot shot.) Is it worth regulating myself to use the 2 fingers this late in the game? I often try to and just seem to have much less angle control albeit what seems like more power? The only time I feel remotely successful at the 2 finger grips is with mids and putters. Any thoughts?
@willhowarddg4 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes change it! I used to do the one finger grip and it took me a few weeks to get it under control. Once I finally got good at it, it was a game changer! The disc doesn’t flutter any more when it leaves my hand, I have a lot more control, and I can throw forehands 50 feet farther. If you make the change, it might take a while to get used to it, but you’ll appreciate that you did it!

@Doc Xen Not always. A lefty forehand will be used differently and a lot more than a righty’s. Lefty’s need forehands for the traditional rhbh hyzer holes. If you are looking for a forehand disc, you might need multiple molds. I would get a very overstable disc, (firebird, felon, predator) and a straighter disc (convict, fd3, thunderbird.) As a lefty, a forehand will be a shot you will need a lot.

When throwing the Wrath sidearm, I put a good bit hyzer (wing down) to get the typical S flight with fade right at the end. My question, I get a slight wobble for about 50 feet downrange. I've videoed my throws and the wobble is completely gone after 50 or so feet and then disc fly smooth. Is this initial wobble off axis torque from my release or is it the effect of the hyzer being overcome when the disc snaps back to left level flight?

I have only played a few months, I came from ultimate and I'm using the "wrong" grip. On the one hand I feel like I don't have most of these problems and I can just provide way more spin using the grip that feels more natural, on the other hand, my full out forehand is around 200 ft (to convert distances from meters in ft still messes with my brain sometimes) Should I give my more "natural" but "wrong" grip up?
@steelerfan7864 жыл бұрын
Yes! I came to disc golf after a decade of Ultimate. In Ultimate, the forehand throw is lead by the ulna bone in the forearm, which usually gives just a touch of nose up and allows a slow, glidey, understable disc like the UltraStar to fly farther. A disc golf forehand throw, especially drives, requires more speed and nose down, which is much easier with the stacked grip and leading the throw with the muscles in the forearm instead of the ulna bone.

@@steelerfan786 interesting. I'm a long time ultimate player too. I find throwing disc golf discs pretty easy and can make them so what I want, until it comes to throwing forehands really hard. I'm ultimate I could score pitch length forehand hucks, but the disc golf fourhand really loses power as the motion transfers to the discs. I guess it's a more compact whip since the disc radius is so much less, but that's where your fore arm tip makes sense, I'll try that. Can't do the layered grip though, I find I need both fingers pressing against the rim one after the other. Hopefully I'm not losing too much power that way

I think I've had problems with bringing the elbow up late and putting way too much strain on my elbow. It would always end up hurting even if I only threw a few max power shots. That said i got a good 300 ft out of my felon when I was just kinda winging it and putting my whole body into it. It flattened out like I'd never gotten it to with the backhand. Should I be trying something slower like he said?

I have a disc so overstable that I have to forehand it anhyzer and it still has a net left-to-right overall motion because of the fade. I am very inexperienced, but I will experiment with other discs to get the hyzer flip (which should come naturally enough, because I’m used to Ultimate discs).

My forehand is just becoming something I am finding good and serviceable. Part of that is not avoiding using them when I know it's the correct shot rather than the more comfortable shot for me. My big question is about putting the disc deep into my hand. I feel like it catches the knuckle closest to my hand and I have bad releases. I've been setting the disc just in front of that knuckle with better success but I know I'd have more stability if it was deeper in my hand. Any tips on my issue would be appreciated.
@jekmoha34 жыл бұрын
I've always had the same problem and this is what creates wobble for me (not the wrist roll). Placing my thumb closer to the edge of the disc has helped me a lot. When throwing a forehand do you release the disc or let it rip out like when throwing a backhand?
@robinmclean72034 жыл бұрын
Great Question. Because you are cocking your wrist back, you do snap it at release. Also, unlike a backhand, a forehand would not have nearly enough spin if you simply pulled it through with your arm or shoulder. This is why Danny's tip about the PAD! of your finger is so important. You press the pad of your middle finger into the rim to get snap and spin. Then just keep that hand upside down, not turned over like a pitcher would, and you are good to go. Hope that helps.

I've tried working with the undertsable Hades, but it just turns over on me so I guess I'm not giving it enough hyzer angle. @timorautiainen17834 жыл бұрын
I have pretty much same problem, webbing with my thumb and index finger is bit malformed to extend more out from base of the gap so it hurts. What I've used which feels lot more comfortable especially with midranges somewhat like this (only description). Keep your middle finger straight on the rim like on stack grip. Then with index finger make about 90 degree bend inwards from first joint on the rim. So it pretty much ends up being under the thumb's tip under the plate. This way I also seem to get better contact and do not need to press as hard on the disc to prevent early release/slipping from hand. Only what I've noticed with this is to keep the nose down can be bit harder. For me at least, could be just lack of training.

I started out super overstable just so I didn't rage quit. Then when I got a little more pop in my forehand shot I went more and more understable so I didn't fade right so far. don't get me wrong, I'm still terrible and have to lead my throws pretty far left, but I can for the most part make it land where I want to... just not as straight or as far as I'd like.

Pro tip, watch a baseball pitcher that throws side arm and you can learn a lot with the way to move your arm correctly to get good rips

Still can’t and pretty confident I’ll never be able to throw a forehand. Just hurts.

4 years ago I could throw a forehand about 375 feet and took the winter off from disc golf, now I can't get my forehand past 310 feet. Not sure what I am doing different now except maybe not trusting my power and possibly a little more snap in my wrist could help. I've never been able to throw a backhand more than 320 feet or so. Idk how these pros are throwing a midrange over 400 feet. My Truth only goes about 240 MAYBE. Roc 3 about 250. It's all about that perfect body shift.

Practice flippy, but in rounds throw straight stuff.
