Cheers to the 700+ people who entered to win the 6 driver Westone IEMs (a new record). The winner is @bassbycoop Congratulations! Remember, I will NEVER ask you for money in any way for these. Also, many thanks to those who listened to the new Spiral Cell album. I saw a large uptick in streaming/listens after this video, and it means a lot to me that some of you took the time to check out my original music. Thanks again :) A couple of tips I left out of this video: -Adding reverb to your ears can help a lot and not make it sound so dry -Scooping out some of the low end can prevent it from sounding muddy. This is a delicate process, you don't want to overdo it, but low end and low mids is where you get "mud" -Make sure the sensitivity/gain is set properly on your IEMs. Too quiet of a signal will cause noise when you turn up, and too hot of a signal can cause distortion. Hope that helps! Leave any other helpful tips down below if you have any :)

Hi, My 2c for IEM as Scott mentioned are the KZ/CCA in ear monitors. I am a pianist playing at a rock band. Mostly piano and electric piano sounds. For about 2 years, I used the KZ ZS 10 pro, and it was ok, but I felt something is missing. Recently I purchased the CCA pianist, and I was a game changer. My piano is the KORG SV2. The first time I played with the CCA pianist I felt that I am playing a real acoustic grand piano. Now I can hear all the nuances of a real grand. It makes me to play a lot more.

Drummer here and a hobby/side hustle soundman! Found your channel a few months ago and has helped me understand wireless frequencies, to get a great wireless mic. Also recently helped me get bass player for band I run sound for to ditch his rig and go in ears, a quadruple win for him, the band stage volume, me to mix them better, and the audience. Spiral cell is the way! ✌️

100%. Something that made a big difference for my band was switching to in ears that let in some ambient sound, the KZ ZAX. Less isolation on these, by design

@@ViktorNova which KZ ZAX exactly has ambience. (Or did you mean they don't have a good "seal" in the ears hence leaking ambient sound in?) Cant find anything on them about ambience. Can you share a link please?

After 38 years of playing in various bands I’ve just started using in-ears for the last 6 months. Needed a little time to adjust and now absolutely love them and as you said once you save the mix set up on your mixer, it’s a win for everyone, especially when I’m the one mixing on stage playing keys! “Spiral Cell” Thanks for your videos Scott, have learnt a lot 👍

Great review as usual, Scott. A couple of comments: 1.) The biggest gain for me is when I went to stereo. Totally worth it! 2.) As far as custom molds, I've had them made for me three separate times and I've never had anywhere near as good of an isolation seal as I do with Comply tips. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, Spiral Cell and all that good stuff. Rock on! Oh, and I did have a "welcome to the future" moment yesterday. Playing a very casual gig with a pickup band, and I asked the sound guy, "Can I do IEMs? And if so, can I do my own mix?" He said sure thing, and after I'd downloaded the mix app to my iPhone, I was off and running. This sort of thing would not have happened ten years ago, and it was just an everyday thing now. Since I've been playing for about sixty years, I started in the days of no monitors. You just listened to your voice coming out of the PA speakers. Fun times, but things are WAY better now.

Thanks for this video Scott. I’ve learned l lot from all your videos. Like anything I’ve ever done with music, using in-ear monitors has taken time and lots of trial and error, followed by adjustments. But the more I use them, the better sound I’m able to get through minor adjustments and occasionally upgrading my equipment. Your gear reviews and recommendations are very helpful in that regard. Spiral Cell is the winner!

We use that Presonus mixer in our in-ear rack. We've been experimenting with a different way of setting up in-ears, where we don't split anything except vocals in the rack, and instead everything else is split at the source. The amps are all double mic'd, one for FoH and one for monitors, and the bassist has a DI on her pedalboard to split the bass. Spiral Cell!

Hi Scott. I run IEM for my own bands and when ai mix for others. Ambient mics are a must. One trick I’ve used is to setup a ducker on the ambience mics, triggered by the music. It drops the mics by around 10db when the music starts. It does wonders to clean up the mix, but also run the mics louder between songs. Singers (front people) love it. Even little Behringer C2’s are good enough, and cheap.
@Johnseeterlin

All your advice is spot on Scott! I have two different bands at different levels of in in ear usage. One is way more experienced and uses all the high end stuff with stereo mixes. All of them know how to plug all their instruments in the subsnakes, while I take care of everything in the back of the rig with the sound person. Split tails remain plugged in at all times so that is just handed to a FOH engineer while I plug in all the subsnakes to the splitters directly. After 10 years of doing it, we’ve got it down to where not much goes wrong and the biggest issue is usually just finding clean wireless in ear channels. For the other band that is newer, no one really knows anything about how the in ears and the splits work and I’m constantly running around overwhelmed trying to make sure everything works and is plugged in right. We also use wired in-ears in mono which makes for more difficulty in personal mix satisfaction as well as annoying extra cabling for the wired ears. There are less people and instruments in that band, yet everything is way harder to achieve because of all these factors, so it really goes to show that all would go smoother if everyone had a basic understanding of at least of where their stuff gets plugged in and how to make sure they’re getting their own sound coming through their ears. I also agree running mono means you just should put in only what you need to hear to successfully play your parts which can sometimes be not as fun, but stereo will give you more options to hear a little bit of everything because of the panning and separation. Exciting to hear about the new Spiral Cell record! I will have to give it a listen!

Using in ears are a game changer, playing to a click track, adding cues, etc... it's might be considered a crutch to some but it's also a confidence booster. I have told my bandmates that less data in your ears is more... with a mono mix take the minimum data needed... for me since I am the bass player and backup vocals, I wanna hear the click/cues, lead vocals, my vocals, and the backing tracks. I add a light touch of lead guitar for flavor. Speaking of flavor, Spiral Cell released a new album last week... I don't remember Scott saying anything about that

Great video, Scott! One thing I would add about IEMs and the sound occlusion they create is that (even with custom fitted earpieces) many of the low frequencies are still going to bleed through into your ears. A good approach I have used is to hi-pass or dial back some of the low-end EQ in your IEM mix, and bring the remainder up only enough to blend with the low-end naturally bleeding into your ears. This rolling off results in better separation in your IEM mix, and won't push the drivers/armatures so hard. It also means you'll be saving your hearing by lowering your overall mix volume.

Spiral Cell, cool name for an album! Also, Spiral Cells are used in batteries and capacitors among other things because that configuration gives a very high surface area between plates or electrodes in a small space, and surface area is a huge determinant of capacity in current carrying applications such as batteries or capacitance in the case of capacitors. I really enjoy your videos! They are very informative! Keep up the great work. Also these IEM’s would be great for me because I’m just getting my band going and I have to practice with headphones at night and good quality IEM’s would help with clarity when learning new music by ear. As I went on KZbin to find some new Spiral Cell music I saw a new Scott Uhl video about IEMs. With my primary band we went to ears and all digital and its fantastic. I joined a second band a few months ago and I would like to get them on ears and what Scott said about “educate your bandmates“ is really important. If your band eventually goes to all IEM spend time together without your instruments without practicing going over setting up your sound system. It will make your set up & teardown easier. Plus if one has an issue during a show they will know how to troubleshoot and solve or call out to somebody else to help take care of it.

Your content in your videos is pure and concise. I really appreciate all of your IEM content because it’s something that I’m concerned about. I’ve realized that I’ve lost some of the low and mid spectrum in my left ear and now depend my right ear more often. I’m not as “left eared” as I use to be. I play acoustic guitar at church and they supply us with Shure SE215s with single drivers. I’m leaning toward at least 3 driver IEMs but looking for the best bang for my buck. Thank You Again, your information has been utilized several times this year to improve the church sound system. I've also learned a good amount and used in managing the sound/broadcast booth. Hopefully "Spiral Cell" will strike a chord and be one of your greatest successes thus far.

Great video! As someone who did their first show on IEMs after years of wedges recently, this is a massive help moving forward. Also congrats on the new Spiral Cell album!

Scott, your videos are like the perfect in-ear monitors for my brain-they keep me tuned in to all the right frequencies! 🎧📈 Every time I see your content in my recommendations, I feel like I’m discovering the musical equivalent of a 'Spiral Cell'-a beautifully complex structure of knowledge that just keeps on giving. Keep rocking the educational beats! 🎸🧠🤘

I dig all your vids, so helpful, regardless of any giveaways. The large majority of my IEM rack and set up has come from your vids, which I started watching almost exactly one year ago, when I started putting it all together. Thanks for all the vids! Oh yeah, and Spiral Cell for the win.

Absolutely love using my KZ ZS10 Pros. As a drummer they provide an excellent seal and the 5 driver setup works beautifully. Spiral Cell!

I followed a lot of your tips so far. CCA IEM is one of my discoveries - very affordable and good quality. What I like the most though is your practical set up with real-life examples from your gigs. My Spiral Cell brain is heavilly affected by your down to earth approach.
