1 correction. Night sights that used radioactive luminous paint (radium) do *NOT* stop glowing bevause the sights lost radioactivity (the half life of radium is about 1600 years). For all intents and purposes, thaoe sights are still *just as radioactive as the day they left the factory* . (Ditto for all those old radium paint compasses, watches, alarm clocks, etc.) The problem is you cannot *see* radioactivity directly; you need something that phosphoruses and reacts to the inpact of the alpha particles by emitting visible light. The phosphorescent paint has broken down from decades of alpha particle bombardment and oxidation and is no longer glowing when hit by alpha particles. But of you apply a new layer of Luminova or silver activated zinc sulphide paste, the radioluminescence will work again (allowing your night sights to glow all night). And both of those compounds are still in use today, because in addition to reacting when hit by alpha particles, these paints also function as the non-radioactive "charge up with bright light" type of glow in the dark paint. And never, *ever* , try and *remove* the "dead" radium paint. It's perfectly safe if left alone (I mean, don't lick it, but otherwise you can ignore it), but if you try and remove it, you will turn it into dust that floats and gets inhaled - literally the most dangerous thing you could do with it (even more dangerous than drinking brand new radium paint would be).

The amount of tism around forward assist is concerning. Yes, your personal rifle that’s well taken care of will never need it. Yes, it can make ammo related jams worse. It’s for rifles that aren’t yours, and aren’t taken care of, to include but not limited to, qualification rifles. And there are jams that happen as a result of cleanliness and wear. I have to use it at least once every time I qualify, because they never clean them afterwards. I never got a double feed or stove pipe. It’s always the sliding resistance from all the soot in the upper and buffer. It just right on the edge of having enough momentum to lock the bolt.

On the DMZ the A1. The rifle never really intended for long ranges but to replace the M1 Carbine noted as failing in Korea. The M-14 was available for issue in long distance locations. The point then is the forward assist. We were not allowed to be loaded on police patrol. The idea would be to quietly ease the bolt and round forward and then finish with the forward extractor.Othrrvthan that I never had or saw a jammed AR-15 at ranges.

Both were designed for combat. The A1 was a basic battle sight. Suitable for an individual rifleman.
