I guess from the guard's perspective, it's really dark and has to go by the sound of the footsteps and their flashlight; it's just bright from our perspective. By matching the pose as the statues, he's hiding his silhouette from the flashlight, practically keeping himself hidden from the guards.

This type of game would work really well on the switch, especially with the touchscreen or when you’re in docked mode you’d just push buttons that would be assigned to the different colors.
