I love FGCI. I just bought their gelcoat paste. I'm using it to fill in the stress cracks and spider cracks plus repairing some Nick's and chips. I just repaired some holes from a bimini top and a couple of Nick's. I grind out the cracks with a dye grinder and a conical bur. I grind them out down to the fiberglass and the paste fills them ease even on the bottom of the hull. It has a beautiful peanutbutter consistency and it is a solid polyester repair when it hardens. It sands down easily and you can by different dye to color match it. I didn't do that the white it comes in doesn't match my top paint but I'm just using it as a filler and fairing material then putting a fresh coat of Gelcoat over the top of the whole topside.

You were totally dependent on the straightness of the plywood when it was on the saw horses. Also, with no clamps in the middle there’s likely to be a big un supported void in the middle. I would have put down some visqueen on a flat surface and put the project on that. I also would have used a thickener and troweled the polyester before bedding down the plywood. Lower one end down first in the direction of the trowel marks so the air gets a chance to get out. You could then stack weights around and have straight full contact assembly.

I appreciate this video very much! I just completed the floor on my grady white center hatch almost exactly as you did. The floor so far feels like a rock but 1 section feels like it kind of removed itself from the glass on 1 side between the wood and top glass. I even let it cure for a week before I installed but it doesn't bother me, it's no longer soft.

A cool trick for wetting out the heavy woven cloth is to wet out the cloth between two sheets of visqueen. Then roll the surface of the visqueen which will force the air out and wet out the cloth much faster. Then you transfer the woven cloth to the wood using the visqueen. Once in place you roll the visqueen surface one last time and then remove it. Also.... to give yourself more working time with Poly, put it something large and flat like a cookie sheet. The depth of the resin is what makes it kick fast (as well as heat).

I would have layed the saved fiberglass piece on a solid level surface before glassing the board on... That piece is going to be warped unless you get lucky. The saw horses should have been level in every direction and perfectly parallel to each other then place at least 4 - 6, 2"x2" strips across them to support the original work piece. Other than that... Good job!

Great video as always!!! I have to say though, I'm not sold on the whole idea of an access panel for the entire fuel tank. The possibility of that much water intrusion into a cavity not intended for water intrusion out weighs the benefits of access if you ever need it. I'd rather do a deck repair. I know that's not the point of the video, just my 2 cents!! Anyway, thanks for sharing!!!

Maybe you can answer this question. The previous owner of our boat tied it up with another boat that left 3 gouge marks an 1/8 of an inch deep at most. They opted to wrap the boat instead of fixing the damage and the installer cut the wrap on the gel coat. How would you go about fixing the small gouges and the cut lines in the gel coat from their razor blade? Hope you have an awesome week and stay safe with the hurricane.

I have been VERY disappointed with all the marine grade plywood as of late. Slice off a chunk and soak it in water for a few days. They all have delaminated. New eco friendly glue? Coosa board is all I’ll use. Even if the plywood stays intact it can warp, expand, gain weight rot or release contact with fiberglass or other adhesives when subjected to moisture. Coosa is much less prone to those problems. Components constructed with epoxy glass and Coosa are lifetime.

Yeah sometimes it does that. I watch a few other channels, fishing, forging etc and it will do that on their notification also. Just a touch in the matrix I suppose. Hope you had a good fourth. I know the storm was breathing down your neck. Had to be better than mine. Went fishing Saturday night and steering cable broke. And naturally, no one has that cable so now I get to upgrade the complete steering system so I can get a cable for it. Helm and all. No worries just made the cost go up about 50 bucks. Lol. Have a good one my friend. Keep an eye on those 4 other storms coming.

Why on earth did you put that top coat on with the scraper? I know you cant see it but why not just roller a coat of flow coat and tip it off with a brush.

Do never apply poly to a plywood. Only epoxy may be used to soak wood.

Not really, I wanted to show using wood because a lot of people will still use the wood when doing this :) I'll be showing some coosa work here coming up!

Why go through all that? Just apply new glass to the new wood piece. No use in using that old worn out glass.

@@CaptDavesSportfishing Well most of the new ships and littoral ships in the Navy are full of Aramid (kevlar fiberglass) and the US Navy would love to build a Fiberglass Aircraft carrier because they are tired of having to retire them after 50 years because of all the metal fatigue (the nuclear reactors have indefinite shelf life). Just can't get congress to fund a $20 Billion Fiberglass Carrier (or the kickbacks from the Military Industrial complex) so they are stuck buying $6 Billion Steel carriers ;)
