I really appreciate you showing the kicked off resin screw up, no one on youtube shows what its really like doing any kind of work anymore all those F-ups are covered up or edited out. Its nice to see a honest guy doing good work and not afraid to show what happened. Thanks for sharing a very helpful video.

To help wetting out fiberglass you can put a heavier build up of resin before setting piece to laminate especially on flat areas. You can also use a bondo type spreader to work the fiberglass resin in and get bubbles out with . I order like 50 4in generic brand spreaders on amazon for $15 or less. Just a couple things I wanted to share that may help you now or in the future.

pre-treating wood with 2 coats of resin's best. so when laying glass the wood won't soak up the resin and won't peel or crack

Soon as you said boat works Andy I went and subscribed. I know how to work the glass from working on vetts. But I don't know the material that well. And would believe I came across a full rope of that heavy woven glass for like 2 bucks at an auction. I wasn't sure what it was but I knew it was glass and worth way more than I paid for it lol

Any advice on taking up old fiberglassed over wood that they fiberglassed it to the stringers?? I wanted to remove the floor and the started to find out its pretty much impossible to get it all up cleanly
@ikashibimauler4 жыл бұрын
Oh man 5200 on the panel... Is that going to be impossible to raise? Is there something a bit more removable a person could use instead? I have emotional scarring from 5200 used in semi permanent applications.

You can use Boat Life Life Caulk :) But 4200 has a better and longer lasting seal to it. Remember, on a boat, everything eventually leaks lol

NIce series of videos. Just wondering why after all the work of tearing out a mess of rotted wood and replacing it with the nice Coosa board, the bulkhead, floor piece and floor support framing was rebuilt using wood again. Other than the higher cost for composite, why not use a composite material here as well?? Small pennies in the scheme of the overall repair cost.
@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
You're correct, a lot came down to the cost, as well as the time crunch to get the videos done and uploaded, and multiple other projects going on when I did this. Behind the scenes of a video can play a big part in a project :/
@NeverEnoughPyro404 жыл бұрын
I am sure his decision came down to money, With that said it is not like this wood is going to rot overnight! My boat is a 1987 2288 cuddy walk around with a 4.3 L sterndrive! Except for the fuel tank cover that I replaced last year, I have no other right whatsoever! I have owned this boat since 1995 and it is docked in salt water on the East Coast all summer every summer! Most of the time when you have wood rotting out on boats it is usually because of the quality of workmanship that is performed on boat by usually by the owners! Everything must be sealed when replacing or installing!

@pierremitham29644 жыл бұрын
You should consider switching from roving and mat to 1708 biaxial. The finished product is much better and tends to require less sanding and produces a stronger laminate with less work. If you use peel ply it gets even better!

I have a question, I'm not supposed to put fast bonding foam between the gas tank
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
I don't foam in fuel tanks anymore. You can if you want to, but I've found that it tends to hold water up against the tank and it is better to have the tank screwed to the boat and have the ability to breathe. Getting air around the tank is a good thing

So where you able to fix the problem with your computer?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Sort of, either I've got a RAM stick that is failing or the motherboard is failing. Only blue screens of death when trying to upload a video. So it's possible that a RAM stick fails when dumping a huge amount of memory, or there is something bugging in the motherboard :(
@douglasthompson27404 жыл бұрын
How are you ever going to access the fuel tank in the future if you 5200 that panel in place? Fuel tanks are notorious for needing inspection and service. 5200 is pretty permanent stuff while they do make a "debonder" for it it has its limitations and isn't able to work in all situations. There are other products that would work well and not be quite so permanent. Enjoy your videos.
@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Also, in this boat, with the age of the boat, and the brand new tank. Whenever that tank needs to be replaced, the deck will be soft and need to be replaced as well! And most manufactures already put the panels down with 5200 from the factory, so it would just come up the same way I had to get it up the first time :)

I didn’t see you fiberglass the bottom side of your wood floor that’s joining the transom. It will rot away if you didn’t. You didn’t seal the sides either. I know you added the thickened resin to the sides to fill in the gaps but that will not seal all the sides from absorbing moisture . Maybe you did it off camera. Thanks for the video 👍👍
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it gets interesting trying to film the process and do the work, then edit it all together and show all the processes. Sometimes not everything gets shown :) plus, I'm not a fiberglass expert either lol thank you for your support though!

Leaving your new boat out in the driveway in the rain. Then go go out and Pull the plug and watch the brown yukky water run out on the drive way. There's a reason why it's brown. The Under the deck of your boat isn't designed for or well ventilated. All that trapped moisture that doesn't drain out, stays in. If yer gonna make that kind of financial commitment and end up with it sitting in the drive way, even if it's got a custom tonneau, condensation will seek out regions below deck.
@jamesrivers68535 жыл бұрын
I'm confused here the bulkhead that you put in you glass the one side of it towards the fuel tank you dropped it in and then you took your sealing agent your whatever you want to call it your cabosil or silicon whatever. And then you glassed-in and then up into your stringers but what about your peace face in the gas tank it's just glass or did you glass to the stringers too cuz I did not see you do that. And if so it's just an accident waiting to happen. And then on your floor you glass the floor flipped it over with the glass was that glass set or was it still wet cuz I can assure you it's probably hanging down now it never probably adhere to it the plywood things that marine plywood you're using
@atthebrink744 жыл бұрын

You are going to hate life when that fuel Tank ruptures or rots out
@NeverEnoughPyro404 жыл бұрын
Why would the fuel tank rupture or rot out, He probably won’t even on that boat by the time the fuel tank goes bad if it goes bad! My boat is 33 years old in my fuel tank is as good as new! It is docked in salt water all summer long, And the boat gets covered with tons of moisture absorbing containers throughout the boat in the winter! The key to owning a reliable saltwater boat is to flush the engine and wash the boat from top to bottom and front to back after every use! Even if I do not use my boat I make sure I give it a good rinsing once a week due to the salt air alone!

Tony Alexander ... yeah, I’ve got mad respect for 5200. I caught my rub rail with a scuba tank rolling over the side one day. I applied some 5200 and threw a clamp on it until the stuff dried as a temporary fix. That was 2 years ago!!
