Repairing a broken plastic part of a small kid's tricycle that we found in the garbage.

Excellent! Ignore the haters who say not to dig through the garbage, we live in such a wasteful society when it comes to things and especially food. Glad to see you rescuing a broken toy - I dumpster dive all the time at local grocery stores for produce to feed my small flock of chickens.

Clamping plastic with a screw to wood, it works better countersinking the wood first then have the screw pull the plastic in to the countersunk part. more clamping area on the head. Only works for more flexible plastics mind.

There's something very satisfying about doing a project like this for your child. We had a second hand bike for my eldest and when the time came to hand it down to his brother I completely refurbished it, pedals, paint etc. He still doesn't know it wasn't a brand new bike and now he's 35 still very much into mountain biking.

Thumbs up on this one. I live out in West Carleton (where every garbage day is a "re-use / recycle" day) and I am always astounded by what people throw away, particularly in regard to kid's toys. When the nieces were young I frequently pulled stuff out of the trash - sometimes it needed a part, sometimes a metal part needed straightening, sometimes the whole thing just needed a good power-wash. The kids never knew what they were going to get, and they loved it!

'Make do and mend'- nothing wrong with giving a broken or damaged toy/item a new lease of life, some up-tight folks in the comment section are too proud and fashion conscious to even consider that fixing a toy so it lasts for several more years is better than letting it go to waste. Either that, or they lack the skill to even try, so they pour scorn on those that do under the guise of being a higher class of individual; fuck 'em. Carry on being awesome, Matthias.

Matthias, good fix! I've done the same to several plastic toys and the wood is conveniently shapable - haha. Nice toy for her. Now you two can go walking. In a few months, put some wooden blocks on the pedals and she will be off. Mr. Brown doesn't know you very well if he doesn't understand your use of calipers. Tell him to bing watch some of your videos - haha.

About the construction adhesive on plastic...I've used it successfully to make a mechanical connection when working with plastic. That stuff hardens to a really strong and tough plastic material. I fixed a cracked plastic resin patio chair by using a wooden backing truss and drilling many small holes (~ 1/16") in the plastic. I applied the CH to the wood and pressed it to the plastic so that CH squished out the tiny holes. I let it harden and then snip off the excess CH with a knife. The little stems of hardened CH become like rivets or at least claws that hold onto the plastic mechanically instead of adhesively.

He tries to use whats available, but I don't think his goal is to take all kinds of stuff and repair it to get it to work or w/e. If you'd seen a lot of his video's, you'll know he is cutting costs on wood by taking it from the garbage, and that's also where he got his electric motors from for his bandsaws and other self made tools. But I've also seen a lot of bought tools he uses. So I just think that if there is a direct opportunity, he'll take it, and otherwise its just regarding materials etc that he may need in the future for video's.
